Ranula is a mucous extravasation cyst which appears as a swelling in the submental and submandibular regions. Several surgical techniques to manage ranula have been described in the literature, these techniques include the CO2 laser radiation excision. Four patients were treated for intraoral ranula in the floor of the mouth by marsupialization with carbon dioxide laser radiation with defocused beam, continuous mode and 4 watts of power. There were no complications and no recurrences have occurred to date. The results showed that carbon dioxide laser radiation gives optimal results with no need for suture and good wound healing.

The effect of addition of different amounts of acetylacetone (acacH) on the species formed at room temperature and after thermohydrolysis at 70 degreesC for 30 and 120 min of ethanolic SnCl4.5H(2)O solutions is followed by EXAFS spectroscopy at the Sn K-edge. We show that thermohydrolyzed solutions are a mixture of SnO2 nanoparticles and soluble tin polynuclear species. The complexation of the tin molecular precursors by acetylacetonate ligands is evidenced by H-1, C-13, and Sn-119 NMR spectroscopy and EXAFS for a acacH/Sn ratio higher than 2. Single crystals are isolated from solution and the structure, determined by X-ray diffraction, is built up from monomeric Cl-3(H2O)Sn(acac)-H2O units bridged together by hydrogen bonding. The acacH/Sn ratio in solution controls the polycondensation of the hydrolyzed species but not the crystallite size of the SnO2 nanoparticles (similar to2 nm). Because of the major presence of chelated tin mono- and dimeric complexes in solution for acacH/Sn > 2, the condensation is almost inhibited, meanwhile the decrease of amount of chelated complexes for the acacH/Sn < 2 gives rise to an increase of the number of nanoparticles.

Tin oxide thin films doped with 7 mol% antimony oxide multilayer were prepared by the polymeric precursor method. Morphological characterization revealed films with round-shaped grains, nanometric size (similar to 13 nm), and low roughness. These films display high transmittance (similar to 80%) in the visible range of transmittance spectra, which is desirable for transparent conductive oxide films. Analysis on electrical resistivity versus temperature data showed two different conduction mechanisms toward the temperature range. The gas sensor properties measurement of the thicker thin film revealed good sensibility for the NOx. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The laser ablation method was used for depositing porous nanocrystalline indium-tin oxide thin films for gas sensing applications. Samples were prepared at different pressures using three gases (O-2, 0.8N(2):0.2O(2), N-2) and heat-treated in the same atmosphere used for the ablation process. X-ray diffraction results show that the films are not oriented and the grain sizes are in the range between 15 and 40 nm. The grains are round shaped for all samples and the porosity of the films increases with the deposition pressure. The degree of sintering after heat treatment increases for lower oxygen concentrations, generating fractures on the surface of the samples. Film thicknesses are in the range of I pm for all gases as determined from scanning electron microscopy cross-sections. Electrical resistance varies between 36.3 ohm for the film made at 10 Pa pressure in N-2 until 9.35 x 10(7) ohm for the film made at 100 Pa in O-2. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The measurement of sulfur dioxide in air at the parts-per-billion level is described. The experimental arrangement consists of two optical fibers placed on opposite sides of a liquid droplet of malachite green solution. After light has been passed through the droplet, the transmitted light is measured by a referenced photodetection arrangement. The light used in this absorption process is from a monochromatic source (lambda(max) 625 nm). This arrangement permits the variation of color in the droplet to be measured. The sulfur dioxide in the sample is collected by the droplet; it reacts with malachite green resulting in a colorless dye. The decoloration of the solution is proportional to the concentration of sulfur dioxide sampled. The signal depends on the sample flow rate. The present technique is simple, inexpensive, and permits a fast and near real time measurement while consuming very little reagent, (C) 1999 Academic Press.

The preparation of crack-free SnO2 supported membranes requires the development of new strategies of synthesis capable to allow controlled changes of surface chemistry and to improve the processability of supported layers. In this way, the controlled modification of the SnO2 nanoparticle surface by adding capping molecules like Tiron(R) ((OH)(2)C6H2(SO3Na)(2)) during the sol-gel process was studied, aiming to obtain high performance membranes. Colloidal suspensions were prepared by hydrolyzing SnCl4.5H(2)O aqueous solution with NH4OH in presence of Tiron(R). The effect of the amount of Tiro(R) (from I to 20 wt.%) on the structural features of nanoparticles, powder redispersability and particle-solution interface properties was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), quasi-elastic light scattering and electrophoretic mobility measurements. XRPD and EXAFS results showed that the addition of Tiron(R) up to 20 wt.% to colloidal suspensions does not affect the crystallite size of SnO2 primary particles, determined around 2-3 nm. This value is comparable to the hydrodynamic size measured after redispersion of powder prepared with amount of Tiro(R) higher than 7.5 wt.%, indicating the absence of condensation reactions between primary particles after the initial precipitation step. As a consequence the powder with amount of Tiron(R) > 7.5 wt.%, can be fully redispersed in aqueous solution at pH greater than or equal to I I until a nanoparticle concentration of 6 vol.%. The electrophoresis measurements showed a decrease of the isoelectric point by increasing the amount of grafted Tiron(R) at the SnO2 nanoparticle surface, resulting in negatively charged particle-solution interface in all the studied pH range (2-11). These features govern the gelation process favoring the preparation of crack-free SnO2 supported membranes. The control exercised by Tiron(R) modifying agent in the aggregation process allows the fine-tuning of the porosity, from 0.124 to 0.065 cm(3) g(-1), and mean pore size, from 6.4 to 1.9 nm, as the amount of grafted molecules increases from 0 to 10 wt.%. In consequence, the membrane cut-off determined by filtration of polyethylene glycol standard solutions can be screened from 1500 to 3500 g mol(-1). (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

There have been numerous surgical techniques developed for removing the epulis fissuratum lesions in order to improve alveolar ridge contour and improving adaptation of full prostheses. Most of these techniques can cause postoperative complications, such as oedema, pain, difficulty in swallowing and jaw movements, haemorrhage, infections and slow placement of final prostheses. The use of carbon dioxide (CO2) laser for the surgical removal of epulis lesions has resulted in many significant improvements including convenient mucosa removal, no bleeding or need for sutures, and minimal postoperative pain and oedema. This study is of 15 cases of removal of extensive epulis with vestibuloplasty in the maxilla and mandible that was carried out with CO2 laser, with no postoperative complications, rapid healing, and excellent aesthetic and functional outcome, all of which allowed for more rapid placement of final prosthesis.

In order to improve the chemical resistance of zirconium fluoride glass a protective transparent SnO2 layer was deposited by the solgel dip-coating process in the presence of Tiron (R) as particle surface modifier agent. After water immersion for different periods of time, both coated and non-coated fluoride glasses were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, mass loss evaluation, infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In contrast to the effects occurring for non-coated glass, where the surface undergoes a rapid selective dissolution of the most soluble species, the results for the SnO2-coated glass showed that the filling of the film nanopores by dissolved glass material results in a hermetic barrier protecting the glass surface. The selective glass dissolution was confirmed by liquid chromatography measurements of the etching solution after each exposure time. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Methane and carbon dioxide seasonal cycles during years 1998 and 1999 at two Brazilian urban and inland sites are presented. The mixing ratio averages over the studied period of time were 1.80 ppm CH4 and 384.7 ppm CO2. A comparison is made between continental averages and the averages of the three nearest global network background sites of NOAA-CMDL comprising Ascension Island, Namibia and Easter Island. Inland sites had 0.08 ppm or 4.9% more CH4 and 19.0 ppm or 4.9% more CO2 than background over the same time span. The CH4 summer minimum observed in remote sites was also detected inland. During the month of October 98 and 99 inland mixing ratios were frequently similar to background.

Objective: This study compares wound healing efficiency on a rat's skin when the incision was closed with a conventional suture versus vaporized with a CO2 laser. Materials and Methods: In this study, 24 rats were used, and two longitudinal incisions were made with a conventional scalpel in the dorsum of each rat. The left incision was sutured with nylon thread, and the right incision was closed by vaporization with a defocused CO2 laser in continuous mode with an 8-watt power density. Clinical photographs were taken immediately after the procedure, 24 h later, and after 3, 7, 14, and 21 days, documenting the healing of the incision. Results: the results showed that there was an initial delay in wound repair in the vaporized incision as compared to the scalpel incision, but after 21 days, both incisions showed the same clinical characteristics. However, the vaporized incision showed no trauma of the tissue, as opposed to the sutured incision, and no hemorrhagic complications. Conclusion: These results suggest that the CO2 laser can eventually replace the use of sutures.

A nephelometric technique based on a liquid drop is described for the measurement of atmospheric sulfur dioxide. A 40-mul drop of barium chloride and hydrogen peroxide solution is suspended in a flowing-air sampling stream. The sulfur (IV) collected is oxidized to sulfur (VI) and finally precipitated as barium sulfate. Nephelometric detection of drop is achieved by an appropriate arrangement consisting of an optical fiber contacting the drop and a photodiode placed at 90degrees relative to the fiber. The design and characteristics of this drop-based gas sensor system are described. The analytical response, as photocurrent, is proportional to the product of the sampling period and the sulfur dioxide concentration. The detection limit is ca. 1.1 mg m(-3) for a 10-min sampling time. The present technique is fairly rapid and simple, uses a small amount of reagent and is set up with low-cost equipment, making this system economically viable. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. In this study we analyzed possible damages that vaporization from laser radiation could cause to implant material. Fifteen standard titanium implants, measuring 3.75 mm in diameter by 7 mm in length, were placed into the upper and lower jaws of three dogs according to Branemark's system. After osseointegration, all implants were exposed. In group I (control) conventional exposure with a punch was used; in group II, a CO2 laser with 2 W (power density: 256 W/cm(2); fluency: 0.077 J/cm(2), and a pulse mode of 0.30 ms) was used, and in group III 4 W (power density: 512 W/cm(2), fluency: 0.154 J/cm(2), and a pulse mode of 0.30 ms) was used. After vaporization, the cover screws were removed and sent for metallographic examination. The results showed that cover screws irradiated with 2 and 4 W power caused no superficial or microstructural alteration. The results also showed that the prescribed power densities, fluencies, and the use of the pulse mode were suitable for exposing implants without damage to tissue or implant material. Indium-tin oxide nanostructures were deposited by excimer laser ablation in a nitrogen atmosphere using catalyst-free oxidized silicon substrates at 500 degrees C. Up to 1 mbar, nanowires grew by the vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism, with the amount of liquid material decreasing as the deposition pressure increased. The nanowires present the single-crystalline cubic bixbyite structure, oriented < 100 >. For the highest pressure used, pyramids were formed and no sign of liquid material could be observed, indicating that these structures grew by a vapor-solid mechanism. (c) 2006 Acta Materialia Inc.
