We report on two unrelated Brazilian girls born to normal and nonconsanguineous parents and presenting ectodermal dysplasia, ectrodactyly, clefting, tear duct anomalies, and micro/anophthalmia. The clinical picture presented by these patients suggests the diagnosis of Goltz-Gorlin (Focal dermal hypoplasia) syndrome and EEC syndrome.

Speech/language disorders are common in the fragile X syndrome. [Howard-Peebles, 1979: Am J Hom Genet 31:214-222; Renier et al., 1983: J Ment Defic Res 27:51-59; Sparks, 1984: Birth Defects and Speech-Language Disorders, pp, 39-43; Hanson et al., 1986: Am J Med Genet 23:195-206]. Verbal paraphasias have been considered a rare feature and word-finding difficulties have seldom been reported. Here we report on ten Brazilian patients who were evaluated for speech/language disturbances and found that word-finding difficulties were present in 50% of the cases, which is a slightly higher frequency than that of clear dyspraxia. We suggest, therefore, that word-finding difficulties and verbal dyspraxia can be a common feature within the spectrum of this syndrome. Additional speech findings are discussed. Heart failure (NF) is frequently associated with euthyroid sicksyndrome (low T-3 and elevated rT(3)). We investigated if altered thyroid hormone in HF could affect expression of the TH receptor (TR alpha 1), and alpha and beta myosin heavy chains (alpha-MHC beta-MHC). HF was provoked in rats by aortic stenosis. We showed that rT(3) generated front liver and kidney deiodination significantly increased and T-3 decreased in HE; there was significantly higher TR alpha 1 expression, no alpha-MHC expression, but beta-MHC expression. Changes in TR alpha 1 could be compensating for low T-3 from HF.

Methysergide injected bilaterally into the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBN) increases NaCl intake in several models of renin-dependent salt appetite. The present study investigated the role of angiotensin Type 1 (AT(1)) receptors in the subfornical organ (SFO) on this effect. The intake of 0.3 M NaCl and water was induced by combined administration of the diuretic, furosemide (FURO), and the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, captopril (CAP). Pretreatment of the SFO with an AT, receptor antagonist, losartan (1 mu g/200 nl), reduced water intake but not 0.3 M NaCl intake induced by subcutaneous FURO + CAP. Methysergide (4 mu g/200 nl) injected bilaterally into the LPBN increased 0.3 M NaC1 intake after FURO + CAP. Losartan injected into the SFO prevented the additional 0.3 M NaC1 intake caused by LPBN methysergide injections. These results indicate that AT, receptors located in the SFO may have a role in mediating an enhanced sodium intake produced by methysergide treatment. (C) 1998 Elsevier B.V. B.V. Previous studies demonstrated the inhibitory participation of serotonergic ( 5-HT) and oxytocinergic (OT) neurons on sodium appetite induced by peritoneal dialysis (PD) in rats. The activity of 5-HT neurons increases after PD- induced 2% NaCl intake and decreases after sodium depletion; however, the activity of the OT neurons appears only after PD-induced 2% NaCl intake. To discriminate whether the differential activations of the 5-HT and OT neurons in this model are a consequence of the sodium satiation process or are the result of stimulation caused by the entry to the body of a hypertonic sodium solution during sodium access, we analyzed the number of Fos-5-HT- and Fos-OT-immunoreactive neurons in the dorsal raphe nucleus and the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus-supraoptic nucleus, respectively, after isotonic vs. hypertonic NaCl intake induced by PD. We also studied the OT plasma levels after PD- induced isotonic or hypertonic NaCl intake. Sodium intake induced by PD significantly increased the number of Fos-5- HT cells, independently of the concentration of NaCl consumed. In contrast, the number of Fos-OT neurons increased after hypertonic NaCl intake, in both depleted and nondepleted animals. The OT plasma levels significantly increased only in the PD- induced 2% NaCl intake group in relation to others, showing a synergic effect of both factors. In summary, 5-HT neurons were activated after body sodium status was reestablished, suggesting that this system is activated under conditions of satiety. In terms of the OT system, both OT neural activity and OT plasma levels were increased by the entry of hypertonic NaCl solution during sodium consumption, suggesting that this system is involved in the processing of hyperosmotic signals.
