Volatile sulphur compounds (VSC) are the gases mainly responsible for halitosis (bad breath). The aim of this research was to evaluate the effects of medicinal plants on halitosis control. Two commonly used plants were tested: Curcuma zedoaria and Camellia sinensis (green tea). These plants were prepared as an aqueous solution and used as mouthwashes, compared with a standard mouthwash of 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate and a placebo (water). The experiment was conducted with 30 volunteers from the School of Dentistry of Sao Jose dos Campos, Univ. Estadual Paulista - UNESP, SP, Brazil. Each volunteer tested the four mouthwashes. The Cysteine Challenge Method, modified for this study, was used for initial breath standardization. Four breath assessments were conducted after volunteers rinsed orally with acetylcysteine: one before the test mouthwash was used; the second, one minute after its use; a third 90 minutes later; and the last 180 minutes later. The results showed that chlorhexidine gluconate lowered VSC production immediately, and that this effect lasted up to 3 hours, while the tested plants had immediate inhibitory effects but no residual inhibitory effects on VSC. We concluded that Curcuma zedoaria and Camellia sinensis, prepared as infusions and used as mouthwashes, did not have a residual neutralizing effect on VSC.

Purpose: This study evaluated the degree of conversion (DC) of four indirect resin composites (IRCs) with various compositions processed in different polymerization units and investigated the effect of thermal aging on the flexural strength and Vicker's microhardness.Materials and Methods: Specimens were prepared from four IRC materials, namely Gr 1: Resilab (Wilcos); Gr2: Sinfony (3M ESPE); Gr3: VITA VMLC (VITA Zahnfabrik); Gr4: VITA Zeta (VITA Zahnfabrik) using special molds for flexural strength test (N = 80, n = 10 per group) (25 x 2 x 2 mm(3), ISO 4049), for Vicker's microhardness test (N = 80, n = 10 per group) (5 x 4 mm(2)) and for DC (N = 10) using FT-Raman Spectroscopy. For both flexural strength and microhardness tests, half of the specimens were randomly stored in distilled water at 37 degrees C for 24 hours (Groups 1 to 4), and the other half (Groups 5 to 8) were subjected to thermocycling (5000 cycles, 5 to 55 +/- 1 degrees C, dwell time: 30 seconds). Flexural strength was measured in a universal testing machine (crosshead speed: 0.8 mm/min). Microhardness test was performed at 50 g. The data were analyzed using one-way and two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (alpha = 0.05). The correlation between flexural strength and microhardness was evaluated with Pearson's correlation test (alpha = 0.05).Results: A significant effect for the type of IRC and thermocycling was found (p = 0.001, p = 0.001) on the flexural strength results, but thermocycling did not significantly affect the microhardness results (p = 0.078). The interaction factors were significant for both flexural strength and microhardness parameters (p = 0.001 and 0.002, respectively). Thermocycling decreased the flexural strength of the three IRCs tested significantly (p < 0.05), except for VITA Zeta (106.3 +/- 9.1 to 97.2 +/- 14 MPa) (p > 0.05) when compared with nonthermocycled groups. Microhardness results of only Sinfony were significantly affected by thermocycling (25.1 +/- 2.1 to 31 +/- 3.3 Kg/mm(2)). DC values ranged between 63% and 81%, and were not significantly different between the IRCs (p > 0.05). While a positive correlation was found between flexural strength and microhardness without (r = 0.309) and with thermocycling (r = 0.100) for VITA VMLC, negative correlations were found for Resilab under the same conditions (r = -0.190 and -0.305, respectively) (Pearson's correlation coefficient). Conclusion: Although all four IRCs presented nonsignificant DC values, flexural strength and microhardness values varied between materials with and without thermocycling.

The recent experimental results on neutrino oscillation and on muonium-antimuonium conversion require extension of the minimal 3-3-1 model. We review the constraints imposed on the model by these measurements and suggest a pattern of leptonic mixing, with charged leptons in a non-diagonal basis, which accounts for the neutrino physics and circumvents the tight muonium-antimuonium bounds on the model. We also illustrate a scenario where this pattern could be realized.

Cytotoxicity of metals is important because some metals are potential mutagens able to induce tumors in humans and experimental animals. Chromium can damage DNA in several ways, including DNA double strand breaks (DSBs) which generate chromosomal aberrations, micronucleus formation, sister chromatid exchange, formation of DNA adducts and alterations in DNA replication and transcription. In our study, water samples from three sites in the Córrego dos Bagres stream in the Franca municipality of the Brazilian state of São Paulo were subjected to the comet assay and micronucleus test using erythrocytes from the fish Oreochromis niloticus. Nuclear abnormalities of the erythrocytes included blebbed, notched and lobed nuclei, probably due to genotoxic chromium compounds. The greatest comet assay damage occurred with water from a chromium-containing tannery effluent discharge site, supporting the hypothesis that chromium residues can be genotoxic. The mutagenicity of the water samples was assessed using the onion root-tip cell assay, the most frequent chromosomal abnormalities observed being: c-metaphases, stick chromosome, chromosome breaks and losses, bridged anaphases, multipolar anaphases, and micronucleated and binucleated cells. Onion root-tip cell mutagenicity was highest for water samples containing the highest levels of chromium.

The general objective of this work was to develop a monitoring and management model for aquatic plants that could be used in reservoir cascades in Brazil, using the reservoirs of AES-Tiete as a study case. The investigations were carried out at the reservoirs of Barra-Bonita, Bariri, Ibitinga, Promissao, and Nova-Avanhandava, located in the Tiete River Basin; Agua Vermelha, located in the Grande River Basin; Caconde, Limoeiro, and Euclides da Cunha, which are part of the Pardo River Basin; and the Mogi-Guacu reservoir, which belongs to the Mogi-Guacu River basin. The main products of this work were: development of techniques using satellite-generated images for monitoring and planning aquatic plant control; planning and construction of a boat to move floating plant masses and an airboat equipped with a DGPS navigation and application flow control system. Results allowed to conclude that the occurrence of all types of aquatic plants is directly associated with sedimentation process and, consequently, with nutrient and light availability. Reservoirs placed at the beginning of cascades are more subject to sedimentation and occurrence of marginal, floating and emerged plants, and are the priority when it comes to controlling these plants, since they provide a supply of weeds for the other reservoirs. Reservoirs placed downstream show smaller amounts of water-suspended solids, with greater transmission of light and occurrence of submerged plants.

Water and 3% NaCl intake were increased by the injection of 4 ng angiotensin II (ANG II) into the anteroventral third ventricle (AV3V) region of rats. Pretreatment with two specific ANG II receptor antagonists, [octanoyl-Leu8]ANG II and [Leu8]ANG II, significantly reduced ANG II-induced water and saline intake. This inhibition lasted approximately 30 min, with partial recovery at 60 min. In rats with electrolytic lesion of the bilateral ventromedial nucleus of hypothalamus (VMH), the effect of ANG II on water intake was not different from that observed in sham rats, but saline ingestion increased. In summary, the present results show that the AV3V region is an important central structure for ANG II-induced saline ingestion. Lesion of the VMH increases the response to ANG II, showing an interaction between the AV3V region and the VMH in the regulation of salt ingestion.

Previous ecological studies on foraminifera and ostracoda from the tropical Sepetiba Bay, located in the southern part of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, have noted the presence in this area of some cool water taxons typical of the Argentine continental platform. These studies have proposed that parcels of these temperate waters with their associated biological indicators are advected northward along the platform, penetrating into some tropical entrances of the southeast coast of Brazil. In the present study, ecological data (foraminifera, ostracoda and microbivalves), are used together with information obtained by satellite tracked drifting buoys and digital thermal imagery obtained from NOAA satellites to indicate the path taken by these high latitude species along the southern Brazilian coast to arrive in the Sepetiba Bay, near the city of Rio de Janeiro. Our general conclusion is that biotic elements native to the colder, less saline marine waters seen to the south of Brazil have been and are being advected northward along the inner part of the continental platform to about 22 degrees S. Water parcels containing this biota may, in a sporadic fashion, enter into the tropical Sepetiba Bay. The passage of meteorological fronts through the region is considered to be an important if not the principal mechanism for the sporadic entry of the cool water into the Southern Coastal Entrance of the State of Rio de Janeiro. We tested the effects of estradiol, progesterone and testosterone on water and salt intake induced by angiotensin II (ANG II) injected into the third ventricle of female Holtzman rats weighing 250-300 g. The water and salt ingestion observed after 120 min in the control experiments (injection of 0.5 mu l of 0.15 M NaCl into the third ventricle) was 1.6 +/- 0.3 ml (N = 10) and 0.3 +/- 0.1 ml (N = 8) in intact rats, respectively, and 1.4 +/- 0.3 ml (N = 10) and 0.2 +/- 0.1 (N = 8) in ovariectomized rats, respectively. ANG II injected in intact rats (4, 6, 12, 25, and 50 ng, icv, in 0.5 mu l saline) induced an increase in water intake (4.3 +/- 0.6, 5.4 +/- 0.7. 7.8 +/- 0.8, 10.4 +/- 1.2, 11.2 +/- 1.4 ml/120 min, respectively) (N = 43). The same doses of icv ANG II in intact rats increased the 3% NaCl intake (0.9 +/- 0.2; 1.4 +/- 0.3, 2.3 +/- 0.4, 2.2 +/- 0.3. and 2.5 +/- 0.4 ml/120 min, respectively) (N = 42). When administered to ovariectomized rats ANG II induced comparable amounts of water intake (4.0 +/- 0.5, 4.8 +/- 0.6, 6.9 +/- 0.7. 9.6 +/- 0.8, and 10.9 +/- 1.2 ml/120 min, respectively) (N = 43) but there was a significant decrease of 3% NaCl solution ingestion (0.3 +/- 0.1, 0.4 +/- 0.1, 0.8 +/- 0.2, 0.7 +/- 0.2, and 0.6 +/- 0.2 ml/120 min, respectively) (N = 44). Estrogen (50 mu g), progesterone (25 ng), and testosterone (300 mu g) were injected daily into ovariectomized rats for 21 days. Treatment with estrogen decreased the water intake and abolished the saline ingestion induced by icy injection of ANG II (12 ng (2.8 +/- 1.2 and 0.3 +/- 0.1 ml/120 min, respectively) (N = 8). Treatment with progesterone also reduced the water intake (3.3 +/- 0.6 ml/120 min) (N = 8) and abolished the ANG II-induced saline ingestion (0.4 +/- 0.1 ml/120 min) (N = 8), but these effects were not observed with testosterone (6.4 +/- 0.8 and 2.2 +/- 0.3 ml/120 min, respectively) (N = 8). These results indicate that ANG II induces a greater increase in sodium intake in intact female rats than in ovariectomized rats and that estrogen and progesterone impair water and sodium intake in ovariectomized rats.

In this study we investigated the influence of a ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH) lesion with ibotenic acid on water and sodium intake and presser responses induced by combined treatment of the median preoptic nucleus (MnPO) with angiotensin Il (ANG II) and adrenergic agonists (phenylephrine, norepinephrine, isoproterenol and clonidine). Male Holtzman rats with a stainless steel cannula implanted into the MnPO and bilateral sham (vehicle) or VMH lesions with ibotenic acid were used. The ingestion of water and sodium and mean arterial pressure (MAP) were determined in separate groups submitted to sodium depletion with the diuretic furosemide (20 mg/rat). ANG II (10 pmol) injection into the MnPO of sham-lesioned rats induced water and sodium intake and presser responses. VMH-lesion reduced ANG II-induced water intake and increased saline intake, In sham rats phenylephrine (80 nmol) into MnPO increased, whereas norepinephrine (80 nmol) and clonidine (40 nmol) reduced ANG II-induced water intake while sodium intake was reduced only by clonidine into MnPO. In VMH-lesioned rats, phenylephrine reduced, noradrenaline increased and clonidine produced no effect on ANG II-induced water intake. In lesioned rats ANG II-induced sodium intake was reduced by phenylephrine and noradrenaline, whereas clonidine produced no change. ANG II-induced presser response was reduced in VMH-lesioned rats, but the presser response combining ANG II and phenylephrine or noradrenaline in VMH-lesioned rats was bigger than sham rats. These results show that the VMH is important for the changes in water and sodium intake and cardiovascular responses induced by angiotensinergic and adrenergic activation of the MnPO.
