A pon stimulation by contralateral, ipsilateral or bilateral noise, the medial olivocochlear efferent tract changes the amplitude of otoacoustic emissions relative to the tested ear, reducing or removing it; this resulted in a reduction/suppression effect of otoacoustic emissions. Differences in patterns of elimination/reduction of otoacoustic emissions between ears have been documented worldwide; there are, however, no Brazilian studies investigating the effect of lateral dominance.Aims: To compare the effect of the presence of deletion/reduction of otoacoustic emissions and their amplitude relative to lateral dominance in normal hearing adults. Methods: A clinical and experimental study. The sample comprised 75 individuals. The methodology was conventional - linear click intensity of 60 dB SPL; white noise was contralateral stimulation at 60 dB SPL.Description of results: There were no statistically significant differences between right and left ear results, in terms of asymmetry of the degree of otoacoustic emissions and the presence of suppression/reduction.Conclusion: There is no lateral dominance in the degree of otoacoustic emissions in the presence of suppression/reduction in the study population.

AimTo study osseointegration and bone-level changes at implants installed using either a standard or a reduced diameter bur for implant bed preparation.Material and methodsIn six Labrador dogs, the first and second premolars were extracted bilaterally. Subsequently, mesial roots of the first molars were endodontically treated and distal roots, including the corresponding part of the crown, were extracted. After 3 months of healing, flaps were elevated and recipient sites were prepared in all experimental sites. The control site was prepared using a standard procedure, while the test site was prepared using a drill with a 0.2 mm reduced diameter than the standard one used in the contra-lateral side. After 4 months of healing, the animals were euthanized and biopsies were obtained for histological processing and evaluation.ResultsWith the exception of one implant that was lost, all implants were integrated in mineralized bone. The alveolar crest underwent resorption at control as well as at test sites (buccal aspect similar to 1 mm). The most coronal contact of bone-to-implant was located between 1.2 and 1.6 mm at the test and between 1.3 and 1.7 mm at the control sites. Bone-to-implant contact percentage was between 49% and 67%. No statistically significant differences were found for any of the outcome variables.ConclusionsAfter 4 months of healing, lateral pressure to the implant bed as reflected by higher insertion torques (36 vs. 15 N cm in the premolar and 19 vs. 7 N cm in the molar regions) did not affect the bone-to-implant contact. To cite this article:Pantani F, Botticelli D, Garcia IR Jr., Salata LA, Borges GJ, Lang NP. Water intake was studied in albino rats with lesions in the lateral preoptic area, in the subfornical organ, and in both the lateral preoptic area and the subfornical organ. Drinking was induced by cellular dehydration, hypovolemia, hypotension (isoproterenol or caval ligation), and water deprivation. The animals with lesions in both areas showed a significant reduction in their water intake in response to cellular dehydration. Drinking due to extracellular dehydration was reduced in the animals that received only subfornical organ lesions, and was reduced even further in the animals with both areas ablated. The lesions in the subfornical organ were sufficient to reduce the thirst induced by caval ligation. The lesions in both areas inhibit water intake induced by caval ligation. Water intake induced by deprivation was reduced when both areas were destroyed. These findings demonstrate that both the lateral preoptic area and the subfornical organ are necessary for normal drinking in response to cellular dehydration, hypovolemia, and hypotension. There is further evidence that the lateral preoptic area and subfornical organ interact in the control of water intake induced by a variety of thirst challenges.

In the present study we investigated the effect of electrolytic lesion of the medial septal area (MSA) on the dipsogenic, natriuretic, kaliuretic and pressor responses elicited by intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection of the cholinergic agonist carbachol. Freely moving rats with sham or MSA lesion (1-7 days and 14-18 days) and a stainless steel cannula implanted into the lateral ventricle were studied. In sham rats, i.c.v. injection of carbachol (7.5 nmol) produced an increase in water intake (10.2 ± 1.5 ml/h), mean arterial pressure (MAP) (35 ± 5 mmHg) and urinary Na+ and K+ excretion (551 ± 83 and 170 ± 17 μEq 120 min, resp.). The pressor (18 ± 3 and 14 ± 4 mmHg, resp.) and natriuretic responses (178 ± 58 and 172 ± 38 μEq 120 min) produced by i.c.v. carbachol in acute or chronic MSA-lesioned rats were reduced. No change was observed in urinary K+ excretion and a reduced water intake (5 ± 1.3 ml/h) was observed only in acute MSA-lesioned rats. These results suggest that the MSA plays an important role for the pressor and natriuretic responses induced by central cholinergic activation in rats. A small influence of this structure on water intake may also be suggested. © 1991.

In this study we investigated the effect of the anteroventral third ventricle (AV3V) lesion on the pressor, bradycardic, natriuretic, kaliuretic, and dipsogenic responses induced by the injection of the cholinergic agonist carbachol into the lateral preoptic area (LPOA) in rats. Male Holtzman rats with sham or electrolytic AV3V lesion were implanted with stainless steel cannula directly into the LPOA. Injection of carbachol (7.5 nmol) into the LPOA of sham rats induced natriuresis (405 ± 66 μEq/120 min), kaliuresis (234 ± 44 μEq/120 min), water intake (9.5 ± 1.7 ml/60 min), bradycardia (-47 ± 11 bpm), and increase in mean arterial pressure (28 ± 3 mmHg). Acute AV3V lesion (1-5 days) reduced the natriuresis (12 ± 4 μEq/120 min), kaliuresis (128 ± 27 μEq/120 min), water intake (1.7 ± 0.9 ml/60 min), and pressor responses (14 ± 4 mmHg) produced by carbachol into the LPOA. Tachycardia instead of bradycardia was also observed. Chronic (14-18 days) AV3V lesion reduced only the pressor response (10 ± 2 mmHg) induced by carbachol. These results showed that acute, but not chronic, AV3V lesion reduced the natriuretic, kaliuretic, and dipsogenic responses to carbachol injection into the LPOA. The pressor response was reduced in acute or chronic AV3V-lesioned rats. The results suggest that the lateral areas may control the fluid and electrolyte balance independently from the AV3V region in chronic AV3V-lesioned rats. © 1992.

The Borborema province (BP) of northeastern Brazil, located between the São Luís and São Francisco cratons, represents a branching system of Precambrian orogens of the South American platform. It is composed of segments of Archean and Proterozoic crust that were deformed by the convergence of the West African and São Francisco-Congo cratons during assembly of the Brasiliano collage (650 to 500 Ma), a period of intense orogenic activity considered to be the strongest and most pervasive tectonic event that affected the Precambrian of the South American platform. The tectonic and kinematic history of the Brasiliano/Panafrican orogeny is fundamental for reconstructing South American and African Precambrian geology. The correlation between Neoproterozoic tectonic processes occurring in both continents should use structural elements, of regional or local character, with identical kinematic and metamorphic conditions manifested in both basement and supracrustal units. North of the Patos shear zone, subhorizontal Brasiliano thrusts (0.65 to 0.58 Ga) affected the basement and the supracrustal Seridó belt with such related regional D1/D2 structures as foliation, lineation, isoclinal folds, and related metamorphism. Overprinting the previous structures, regional folding with a vertical S3 foliation and an associated strike-slip shear zone were developed (0.58 to 0.52 Ga). The metamorphism is similar for all deformation phases, ranging from upper-greenschist to amphibolite facies with mineral assemblages including biolite and garnet throughout the Seridó fold belt. We propose, on the basis of deformational and kinematic reconstructions, that the structural evolution of the Seridó fold belt was characterized by transition from a syn-collisional to a strike-slip regime. The transition between regimes occurred, progressively or instantaneously, by the switching of the maximum and intermediary strain axes of the strain ellipsoid. The entire tectonic history can be related to a frontal or oblique collision and lateral escape tectonics, with local, syn-collisional transpression and transtension. The Patos shear zone represents a final vertical shearing, juxtaposing different terranes of the northern and southern Borborema province.

Alcoholism is considered today one of the most serious social and medical problems. Different investigators have demonstrated that chronic exposure to alcohol causes morphological and physiological changes in the testes and in the accessory sex glands, in the prostate in particular. In the present study, experimental rats were divided into groups receiving sugar cane brandy diluted to 30° G.L. (30%, v/v) and Purina ration ad libitum for 60, 120, 180, 240 and 300 days, respectively. At the end of each period the animals were sacrificed and the lateral lobe of the prostate was collected for histological examination. The results showed atrophied epithelium, accumulation of lipidic droplets and rupture of the microvilli that line the cell surface facing the lumen of cells of the secretory epithelium of the lateral lobe of the prostate.

The subfornical organ (SFO) and the lateral hypothalamus (LH) have been shown to be important for the central action of angiotensin II (ANG II) on water and salt regulation. Several anatomical findings have demonstrated neural connections between the SFO and the LH. The present experiments were conducted to investigate the role of the α-adrenergic antagonists and agonists injected into the LH on the water and salt intake elicited by injections of ANG II into the SFO. Prazosin (an α1-adrenergic antagonist) injected into the LH increased the salt ingestion, whereas yohimbine (an α2-adrenergic antagonist) and propranolol (a β-adrenergic antagonist) antagonized the salt ingestion induced by administration of ANG II into the SFO. Previous administration of clonidine (an α2-adrenergic agonist) or noradrenaline into the LH increased, whereas pretreatment with phenylephrine decreased the sodium intake induced by injection of ANG II into the SFO. Previous treatment with prazosin and propranolol reduced the water intake induced by ANG II. Phenylephrine increased the dipsogenic responses produced by ANG II, whereas previous treatment with clonidine injected into the LH reduced the water intake induced by ANG II administration into the SFO. The LH involvement with SFO on the excitatory and inhibitory mechanisms related to water and sodium intake is suggested.

Toward the end of the larval phase (pre-pupa), the reproductive systems of Melipona quadrifasciata and Frieseomelitta varia workers are anatomically similar. Scanning electron microscopy showed that during this developmental phase the right and left ovaries are fused and form a heart-shaped structure located above the midgut. Each ovary is connected to the genital chamber by a long and slender lateral oviduct. During pupal development, the lateral oviducts of workers from both species become extremely reduced due to a drastic process of cell death, as shown by transmission electron microscopy. During the lateral oviduct shortening, their simple columnar epithelial cells show some signs of apoptosis in addition to necrosis. Cell death was characterized by cytoplasmic vesiculation, peculiar accumulation of glycogen, and dilation of cytoplasmic organelles such as mitochondria and rough endoplasmic reticulum. The nuclei, at first irregularly contoured, became swollen, with chromatin flocculation and various areas of condensed chromatin next to the nuclear envelope. At the end of the pupal phase, deep recesses marked the nuclei. At emergence, worker and queen reproductive systems showed marked differences, although reduction in the lateral oviducts was an event occurring in both castes. However, in queens the ovarioles increased in length and the spermatheca was larger than that of workers. At the external anatomical level, the reproductive system of workers and queens could be distinguished in the white- and pink-eyed pupal phase. The metamorphic function of the death of lateral oviduct cells, with consequent oviduct shortening, is discussed in terms of the anatomical reorganization of the reproductive system and of the ventrolateral positioning of adult worker bee ovaries. Adult male rats (Wistar lineage) were alcoholized with sugar cane liquor diluted at 30° GL during 300 days and sacrificed every 60 days in 5 stages. Samples of choroid plexuses of lateral ventricles were collected and examined at transmission electronic microscope to detect possible ultrastructural alterations and to raise possible pathological correlations. Gradual changes were observed in these animals during all the experiment: dilatation and enlargement of cisternae of Golgi complex, dilatation of RER, presence of digestive vacuoles and a large amount of pinocytic vesicles as well as vesicles with electronlucent content throughout cytoplasm, as well as an enlargement of intercellular space between basolateral interdigitation of the cells and of the connective tissue. The changes observed in the epithelium and connective tissue of choroid plexuses specially in 240 and 300 days of treatment are presumably due to a disturbance in hydroelectrolitic homeostasis, contributing to several morpho-functional disturbs of central nervous system. No changes were observed in the control group animals.

The effects of veratrine have been investigated in mammalian, amphibian, and crustacean muscle, but not in fish. In this work, the action of veratrine was studied in the lateral muscle of the freshwater teleost Oreochromis niloticus after intramuscular injection. Histoenzymological typing and electron microscopy of muscle fibers before and 15, 30, and 60 min after veratrine injection (10 ng/kg fish) were used to indirectly assess the morphological changes and the oxidative and m-ATPase activities. In some cases, muscles were pretreated with tetrodotoxin to determine whether the ultrastructural changes were the result of Na+ channel activation by veratrine. Veratrine altered the metabolism of fibers mainly after 30 min. Oxidative fibers showed decreased NADH-TR activity, whereas that of glycolytic and oxidative-glycolytic type fibers increased. There was no change in the m-ATPase activity of the three fiber types, except at 60 min postveratrine, when a novel fiber type, which showed no reversal after acidic and alkaline preincubations, appeared. Ultrastructural damage involved sarcomeres, myofibrils, and mitochondria, but the T-tubules remained intact. Pretreatment with tetrodotoxin (1 ng/ml) prevented the ultrastructural changes caused by veratrine. These results show that in fish skeletal muscle veratrine produces some effects that are not seen in mammalian muscle.
