A cárie dental é uma das doenças crônico-infecciosas mais comuns no mundo e é potencializada por fatores que favorecem a colonização da bactéria Streptococcus mutans na cavidade oral. O presente trabalho visa avaliar o potencial de sistemas nanoestruturados mucoadesivos para administração bucal do peptídeo sintético p1025, potencialmente ativo contra cárie dental. Este peptídeo, análogo aos fragmentos 1025-1044 da adesina celular de S. mutans mostrou-se, em estudos recentes, eficaz contra a adesão do patógeno na superfície do biofilme bacteriano. Acredita-se que, se incorporado em sistemas nanoestruturados mucoadesivos, sobretudo os sistemas líquido-cristalinos, sua ação possa ser modulada, pelo fato de que estes sistemas podem se aderir na mucosa bucal, de modo a proteger o peptídeo da degradação enzimática, além de prolongar o tempo de contato com a mucosa, diminuindo assim a frequência de administração. Os sistemas nanoestruturados de liberação controlada foram analisados estruturalmente através de microscopia de luz polarizada, determinação do comportamento reológico, TPA e bioadesão. Os resultados evidenciaram, através das análises de microscopia de luz polarizada, a presença de sistemas líquido-cristalinos de fase hexagonal e lamelar, além de domínios de microemulsões. As análises reológicas mostraram que ao adicionar dispersões poliméricas na fase aquosa do sistema, características como pseudoplasticidade e tixotropia são favorecidas, o que pode facilitar a aplicação do produto na mucosa bucal. O teste de biodesão mostrou que o emprego de dispersões poliméricas contribuiu para a adesão na mucosa bucal, sendo os melhores resultados obtidos com dispersão de Policarbofil® a 0,5 %.O teste microbiológico demonstrou a potencialização do efeito inibidor/redutor da carga microbiana com a utilização de óleo de melaleuca na fase oleosa do sistema. Micronuclei (MN) originate from chromosome fragments or whole chromosomes that lag behind at anaphase during cell division can occur due to excessive exposure to harmful agents, defects in mitosis and / or DNA repair process. The study evaluated the frequency of micronuclei in cytological samples after daily use of alcohol -based mouthwash mouth in smokers and non-smokers. We assessed 30 subjects, aged between 17-42 years and established as exclusion criteria: alcohol consumption; periodontal disease; systemic diseases that may interfere with the integrity of the oral mucosa; individuals with medical or pharmacological history that affect the performance of the study, family history of malignancies. For smokers the inclusion criterion was a minimum consumption of 20 cigarettes / day, and the contrast required for non-smokers. The sample was divided into 02 experimental groups: Group 1 Smokers and Group 2 Non-Smokers, both groups performed mouthwash (alcohol 21,6%) with Listerine® Defense of Teeth and Gums for 04 weeks cytological collection were performed on buccal mucosa and portion median border of the tongue, one for initial, week 0 control, and subsequent three weeks with continued use of mouthwash. The collected material was stained by specific staining Feulgen / Fast Green. The analysis of 3000 cells / individual was performed by light microscopy statistics used Kruskal- Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests for frequency MN. The frequency of micronuclei in buccal mucosa was 1.6 ± 1.75 and 1.46 ± 2.06 for the site language to Group 1 Smokers of showing a slight increase compared with Group 2 Non-smoking, which showed a variation of 1.2 ± 1.53 for the buccal mucosa site and 0.86 ± 1.41 for the site language. However, this difference was not statistically significant. The results suggest that alcohol-based mouthwash tested is not an inducer of genotoxic changes, thus not changing the frequency...

O uso contínuo de antifúngicos tópicos e sistêmicos no tratamento convencional de candidose oral tem resultado no aparecimento de Candida albicans resistente. Por este motivo, novas tecnologias para o desenvolvimento de drogas, como os biofármacos, constituem uma estratégia, além de inovadora devido a seu mecanismo de ação, também promissora no campo da biotecnologia. Verificou-se que esta nova tecnologia possui potencial efeito em diminuir a resistência de microrganismos, especialmente do agente etiológico da candidose bucal. A Candida albicans, agente patológico de origem fúngica, expressa diversos fatores de virulência sendo comumente encontrada na pele, cavidade oral, esôfago, trato gastrointestinal e órgão reprodutor feminino podendo acometer pessoas de idades variadas, imunologicamente comprometidas, ou que utilizam próteses dentárias. Nesse sentido, peptídeos com efeito antifúngico, produzidos por plantas, animais e microrganismos estão sendo utilizados como modelos para o desenvolvimento de novas drogas com aplicações em saúde. A Histatina 5 é um peptídeo encontrado na saliva humana com forte propriedade fungicida in vitro. Este peptídeo é extremamente rico nos aminoácidos histidina e lisina e, em pH fisiológico, possui potencial de inibição da formação do biofilme de Candida albicans, podendo ser aplicado portanto, no tratamento da candidose oral. Nesse contexto, o presente estudo consiste na obtenção de análogos da Histatina-5 com modificações em sua estrutura molecular, com o objetivo de otimizar o seu potencial terapêutico já verificado nos peptídeos da família das Histatinas. A Histatina 5SC possui o aminoácido serina C-terminal substituído pela cisteína, o qual é constituído pelo grupo sulfidrila em sua cadeia lateral, para a formação de dímeros. Objectives: natural dentofacial changes and that induced by the Thurow modified extra oral appliance (TMEOA) were evaluated in this prospective study. Methodology: the data consisted of fifteen Class II division 1 children 7 to 10 years old, with anterior open bite and hiperdivergent facial pattern treated with the Thurow appliance and of fifteen Class II division 1 children followed longitudinally from 6 to 12 years of age without treatment (Burlington Growth Centre, Toronto University, Canada). The analyses were based in traditional measurements obtained in lateral cephalometric radiographs scanned with the aid of the software Radiocef Studio®. Radiographs were taken in the beginning and after 1 year of treatment for the treated group and at the 6, 9 and 12 years of age for the control group. Results: the data analysis showed that the TMEOA significantly reduced the SNA, ANB, AOBO, SNPOc SNPM, SGO/NMe, OJ e OB. On the other hand the appliance did not interfere with the SNB e SNPP. The natural growth promoted significant change in the ANB, AOBO, SNPOc, OJ e OB from 6 to 9 years and in the SNB, SNPOc e SGo/NMe from 9 to 12 years. The restriction of the maxillary growth (SNA), reduction of the skeletal discrepancy (ANB) and the reduction of the overjet (OJ) were significant with the treatment considering the natural growth as verified in the control group. Conclusion: the TMEOA corrected the skeletal Class II malocclusion by maxillary restriction, reducing the overjet, closing the anterior open bite and decreasing both the hyper divergent facial pattern and mandible plane inclination.

The objective of the study was to analyze the size of buccal corridor during the smile of individuals from 10 to 19 years of age and to determine whether there is a relationship among buccal corridor, inter premolar distance, inter commissure width. Standard digital frontal photographs in posed broad smiles and dental casts were taken of a sample of 150 individuals divided into 5 age groups of 30 individuals: 10-11 years old (G1), 12-13 years old (G2), 14-15 years old (G3), 16-17 years old (G4), 18-19 years old (G5). Distances among the cusps of superior first premolars and buccal corridors were measured for subsequent comparisons using the Image Tool 3.0 program. Data was analyzed using Anova. The SNK test and Tamhane test were applied. The mean values of the buccal corridor ranged from 4.00-to 10.69 mm on the right side and from 4.06 to 11.43 mm on the left side. In percentage related with intercomissure width each side of the buccal corridor ranged from 7.46 to 16.47% on the right side and from 7.58% to 17.61% on the left side. Buccal corridors were different between genders and increased with age. Males have bigger buccal corridors than females, but there is no difference between gender when calculated as a percentage related with the inter commissure width. The inter premolar width is significantly correlated with inter commissure widths of female individuals 14-15 years old and 18-19 years old, and with the right linear buccal corridor of males and females aged 14-15 years old.

In recent years the number of adult Patients who seek esthetic treatments has increased. Among the patients main concern, lip augmentation has increased, and this procedure has been very well performed and studied by dermatologists and plastic surgeons. Although Orthodontics can achieve good esthetic results through teeth and jaw proper positioning it is a time consuming approach and it discloses some anatomical and biological limitations. Dermatology may be an excellent alternative to enhance orthodontic results through lip augmentation. The aim of this paper is to discuss some dermatology techniques currently available to augment the lips as well as describe a case report highlighting the need for interdisciplinary approach to enhance facial esthetics goals.

This study ev aluated oral health indic ators by determining the pr evalence of dental c aries, periodontal diseases, prosthetic conditions and need in pr egnant women; identifi ed self-perceived oral health status and evaluated association bet ween variables. A clinical examination was performed in fi fty pregnant women assisted in the Preventive Dentistry Clinic-FOAr-UNESP using traditional oral health indicators: DMFT, C ommunity Periodontal Index ( CPI) and pr osthetic c onditions. A semi-struc tured questionnair e was applied to identify oral health perception and to collect sociodemographic variables. For data analysis, pregnant women were allocated in three groups according to their oral health perception (good, fair, poor) and compared according to clinical variables by the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests. DMFT was high, all of them showed periodontal changes, most do not use and do not r equire any type of prosthesis; 36% considered their oral appearance as good. There was signifi cant diff erence between groups for the DMFT index and prosthetic need. It may be concluded that despite dental caries experience of pregnant women was found to be high, the prosthetic need have been detected in most of them and the presence of calculus was observed in all the volunteers, the majority considered their oral health status satisfactory.
