Studies of the band gap properties of one-dimensional superlattices with alternate layers of air and left-handed materials are carried out within the framework of Maxwell's equations. By left-handed material, we mean a material with dispersive negative electric and magnetic responses. Modeling them by Drude-type responses or by fabricated ones, we characterize the n(ω) = 0 gap, i.e., the zeroth order gap, which has been predicted and detected. The band structure and analytic equations for the band edges have been obtained in the long wavelength limit in case of periodic, Fibonacci, and Thue-Morse superlattices. Our studies reveal the nature of the width of the zeroth order band gap, whose edge equations are defined by null averages of the response functions. Oblique incidence is also investigated, yielding remarkable results. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Lagrangian points L4 and L5 lie at 60 degrees ahead of and behind Moon in its orbit with respect to the Earth. Each one of them is a third point of an equilateral triangle with the base of the line defined by those two bodies. These Lagrangian points are stable for the Earth-Moon mass ratio. Because of their distance electromagnetic radiations from the Earth arrive on them substantially attenuated. As so, these Lagrangian points represent remarkable positions to host astronomical observatories. However, this same distance characteristic may be a challenge for periodic servicing mission. In this work, we introduce a new low-cost orbital transfer strategy that opportunistically combine chaotic and swing-by transfers to get a very efficient strategy that can be used for servicing mission on astronomical mission placed on Lagrangian points L4 or L5. This strategy is not only efficient with respect to thrust requirement, but also its time transfer is comparable to others known transfer techniques based on time optimization. An alternative transfer strategy to send spacecrafts to stable orbits around the Lagrangian equilibrium points L4 and L5 based in trajectories derived from the periodic orbits around LI is presented in this work. The trajectories derived, called Trajectories G, are described and studied in terms of the initial generation requirements and their energy variations relative to the Earth through the passage by the lunar sphere of influence. Missions for insertion of spacecrafts in elliptic orbits around L4 and L5 are analysed considering the Restricted Three-Body Problem Earth- Moon-particle and the results are discussed starting from the thrust, time of flight and energy variation relative to the Earth. Using numerical simulations, we analyze the anisotropy effects in the critical currents and dynamical properties of vortices in a thin superconducting film submitted to hexagonal and Kagomé periodical pinning arrays. The calculations are performed at zero temperature, for transport currents parallel and perpendicular to the main axis of the lattice, and parallel to the diagonal axis of the rhombic unit cell. We show that the critical currents and dynamic properties are anisotropic for both pinning arrays and all directions of the transport current. The anisotropic effects are more significant just above the critical current and disappear with higher values of current and both pinning arrays. The dynamical phases for each case and a wide range of transport forces are analyzed. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

In this work we study the periodic solutions, their stability and bifurcation for the class of Duffing differential equation mathematical equation represented where C > 0, ε > 0 and Λ are real parameter, A(t), b(t) and h(t) are continuous T periodic functions and ε is sufficiently small. Our results are proved using the averaging method of first order.

In this paper, we deal with the research of a proposed mathematical model of energy harvesting, including nonlinearities in the piezoelectric coupling and a non-ideal force of excitation. We showed using numerical simulations to analysis of the dynamic responses that, the power harvested was influenced by the nonlinear vibrations of the structure, as well as by the influence of the non-linearities in the piezoelectric coupling. We concluded through of the numerical results that the limited energy source was interacting with the system. Thus, the increasing of the voltage in DC motor led the system produce a good power response, especially in high-energy orbits in the resonance region, but the Sommerfeld effect occurs in the system and a chaotic behavior was found in the post-resonance region. So the power harvested along the time decreases because occurs loses of energy due the interaction between energy source and structure. Keeping the energy harvested constant over time is essential to make possible the use of energy harvesting systems in real applications. To achieve this objective, we applied a control technique in order to stabilize the chaotic system in a periodic stable orbit. We announced that the results were satisfactory and the control maintained the system in a stable condition. © 2012 Foundation for Scientific Research and Technological Innovation.

An algorithm for real-time and onboard orbit determination applying the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) method is developed. Aiming at a very simple and still fairly accurate orbit determination, an analysis is performed to ascertain an adequacy of modeling complexity versus accuracy. The minimum set of to-be-estimated states to reach the level of accuracy of tens of meters is found to have at least the position, velocity, and user clock offset components. The dynamical model is assessed through several tests, covering force model, numerical integration scheme and step size, and simplified variational equations. The measurement model includes only relevant effects to the order of meters. The EKF method is chosen to be the simplest real-time estimation algorithm with adequate tuning of its parameters. In the developed procedure, the obtained position and velocity errors along a day vary from 15 to 20 m and from 0.014 to 0.018 m/s, respectively, with standard deviation from 6 to 10 m and from 0.006 to 0.008 m/s, respectively, with the SA either on or off. The results, as well as analysis of the final adopted models used, are presented in this work. © 2013 Ana Paula Marins Chiaradia et al.

The effect of high hydrostatic and [001] uniaxial pressures on TiO 2 anatase was studied under the framework of periodic calculations with the inclusion of DFT-D2 dispersion potential adjusted for this system (B3LYP-D*). The role of dispersion in distorted unit cells was evaluated in terms of lattice parameters, elastic constants, equation of state, vibrational properties, and electronic properties (band structure and density of states). A more reliable description at high pressures was achieved because the B3LYP-D* presented an improvement in all properties for undistorted bulk over conventional B3LYP and B3LYP-D. From density of states analysis, we observed that the contribution of crystalline orbitals to the edge of valence and conduction bands changed within applied pressure. The studied distortions can give some insight into behavior of electronic and structural properties due to local stress in anatase bulk from doping, defects, and physical tensions in nanometric forms. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

In a previous work, GiuliattiWinter et al. found several stable regions for test particles in orbit around Pluto associated with families of periodic orbits obtained in the circular, restricted three-body problem. They have shown that a possible eccentricity of the Pluto-Charon binary slightly reduces but does not destroy any of these stable regions. In thiswork, we extended their results by analysing the cases with the orbital inclination (I) equal to zero and considering the argument of pericentre (w) equal to 90°, 180° and 270°. We explore the influence of the orbital inclination of the particles in these stable regions. In this case, the initial inclination varies from 10° to 170° in steps of 10°. We also present a sample of results for the longitude of the ascending node Ω = 90°, considering the cases I = 20°, 50°, 130° and 180°. Our results show that stable regions are present in all of the inclined cases, except when the initial inclination of the particles is equal to 110°. A sample of 3D trajectories of quasi-periodic orbits were found related to the periodic orbits obtained in the planar case by Giuliatti Winter et al. © 2013 The Authors. The critical current and melting temperature of a vortex system are analyzed. Calculations are made for a two-dimensional film at finite temperature with two kinds of periodic pinning: hexagonal and Kagomé. A transport current parallel and perpendicular to the main axis of the pinning arrays is applied and molecular dynamics simulations are used to calculate the vortex velocities to obtain the critical currents. The structure factor and displacements of vortices at zero transport current are used to obtain the melting temperature for both pinning arrays. The critical currents are higher for the hexagonal pinning lattice and anisotropic for both pinning arrays. This anisotropy is stronger with temperature for the hexagonal array. For the Kagomé pinning lattice, our analysis shows a multi stage phase melting; that is, as we increase the temperature, each different dynamic phase melts before reaching the melting temperature. Both the melting temperature and critical currents are larger for the hexagonal lattice, indicating the role for the interstitial vortices in decreasing the pinning strength. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

A gas of non-interacting particles diffuses in a lattice of pulsating scatterers. In the finite-horizon case with bounded distance between collisions and strongly chaotic dynamics, the velocity growth (Fermi acceleration) is well described by a master equation, leading to an asymptotic universal non-Maxwellian velocity distribution scaling as v∼t. The infinite-horizon case has intermittent dynamics which enhances the acceleration, leading to v∼t ln t and a non-universal distribution. © Copyright EPLA, 2013.
