This paper discusses on effect of molybdenum on the Ti6Si2B formation in mechanically alloyed and hot-pressed Ti-xMo-22Si-11B (x= 2, 5, 7 and 10 at%) alloys. High-energy ball milling and hot pressing were utilized to produce homogeneous and dense materials, which were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron dispersive spectrometry, and Vickers hardness. The excessive agglomeration during milling was more pronounced in Moricher powders, which was minimized with the formation of brittle phases. Hot pressing of mechanically alloyed Ti-xMo-22Si-11B powders produced dense samples containing lower pore amounts than 1%. Ti6Si2B was formed in microstructure of the hot-pressed Ti-2Mo-22Si-11B alloy only. In Mo-richer quaternary alloys, the Ti3Si and Ti5Si3 phases were preferentially formed during hot pressing. Oppositely to the ternary phase, the Ti3Si phase dissolved a significant Mo amount. Vickers hardness values were reduced in hot-pressed Ti-xMo-22Si-11B alloys containing larger Mo amounts, which were dissolved preferentially in Ti solid solution. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

This work presents the structural characterization of Ti-10Si-5B and Ti-20Si-10B (at-%) alloys produced by high-pressure assisted sintering. Sintering was performed in air at 1100 and 1200°C for 60 s using pressure levels of 5 GPa. Structural evaluation of sintered samples was conducted by means of scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry. Samples were successfully consolidated after sintering, which presented theoretical density values higher than 99%. The microstructures of the sintered Ti-10Si-5B and Ti-20Si-10B alloys revealed the presence of the TiSS, TiB, TiB2, Ti5Si3, Ti5Si4, TiSi, and TiSi2.phases. A small amount of Ti6Si2B was formed after high-pressure assisted sintering of the Ti-20Si-10B alloy (5GPa, 1100°C for 60 s) indicating that equilibrium structures were not achieved during short sintering times. No oxygen and carbon contamination was detected in structures of Ti-Si-B alloys after high-pressure sintering at 1100 and 1200°C without controlled atmosphere. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

The aim of this paper is to optimize the machining of Ti-6Al-4V alloy, by studying the chip formation, roughness and tool wear for different cooling conditions. The results were compared between cooling methods, minimal quantity of fluid (MQF) and flooding, and also without fluid for the tool H13A. The turning of Ti-6Al-4V has shown good results on roughness (0, 8μm) and tool life, which was 11% lower with MQF than with the flooding method. The tool wear causes variation of the shear angle, which promotes strength hardening of the chip. As a result, the machined surface could be damaged. The use of the cutting fluid helps to save the cutting edge and could reduce the strength hardening. Nevertheless, it could also facilitate the formation of built-up edge. The nucleation of alpha lamellar colonies can occur due to a combination of deformation rates and temperature, mainly when the flooding is used, but it's not conclusive. The lamellar colonies were also found with the MQF in some regions, however, this structure did not show hardness variation compared to equiaxial. For all this reasons, the machining parameters might be carefully chosen.

Metal machining is the complex process due the used cutting parameters. In metal cutting process, materials of workpiece differ widely in their ability to deform plastically, to fracture and to sustain tensile stresses. Moreover, the material involved in the process has a great influence in these operations. The Ti-6Al-4V alloy is very used in the aeronautical industry, mainly in the manufacture of engines, has very important properties such the mechanical and corrosion resistance in high te mperatures. The turning of the Ti-Al-4V alloy is very difficult due the rapid tool wear. Such behavior result of the its low thermal conductivity in addition the high reactivity with the cutting tool. The formed chip is segmented and regions of the large deformation named shear bands plows formed. The machinability of the cutting process can be evaluated by several measures including power consume, machined surface quality, tool wear, tool life, microstructure and morphology of the obtained chip. This paper studies the effect of cutting parameters, speed and feed rates, in the tool wear and chip properties using uncoating cemented carbide tool. Microe-structural characterization of the chip and tool wear was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Light Optical Mcroscopy (LOM).

Titanium and its alloys are widely used as biomaterials due to their mechanical, chemical and biological properties. To enhance the biocompatibility of titanium alloys, various surface treatments have been proposed. In particular, the formation of titanium oxide nanotubes layers has been extensively examined. According to the literature, it is possible to induce the growth of TiO2 on the surface of titanium, employing the aqueous anodizing electrolyte. This Ti-7.5Mo alloy was anodized in glycerol electrolytes containg 0.25 wt% of NH4F, with variations in time, voltage and calcinations temperature. After anodization, the sample surfaces were analyzed with a field emission scanning electron microscopy, DRX and contact angle measurements. It was possible to observe the formation of TiO2 on the surface and these findings represent a simple surface treatment for Ti alloys that has high potential for biomedical applications. Purpose: In vivo bone response was assessed by removal torque, hystological and histometrical analysis on a recently developed biomedical Ti-15Mo alloy, after surface modification by laser beam irradiation, installed in the tibia of rabbits. Materials and Methods: A total of 32 wide cylindrical Ti-15Mo dental implants were obtained (10mm × 3.75mm). The implants were divided into two groups: 1) control samples (Machined surface - MS) and 2) implants with their surface modified by Laser beam-irradiation (Test samples - LS). Six implants of each surface were used for removal torque test and 10 of each surface for histological and histometrical analysis. The implants were placed in the tibial metaphyses of rabbits. Results: Average removal torque was 51.5Ncm to MS and >90Ncm to LS. Bone-to-implant-contact percentage was significantly higher for LS implants both in the cortical and marrow regions. Conclusions: The present study demonstrated that laser treated Ti-15Mo alloys are promising materials for biomedical application. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Although titanium and its alloys own good mechanical properties and excellent corrosion resistance, these materials present poor tribological properties for specific applications that require wear resistance. In order to produce wear-resistant surfaces, this work is aimed at achieving improvement of wear characteristics in Ti-Si-B alloys by means of high temperature nitrogen plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII). These alloys were produced by powder metallurgy using high energy ball milling and hot pressing. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction identified the presence of α-titanium, Ti6Si2B, Ti5Si3, TiB and Ti3Si phases. Wear tests were carried out with a ball-on-disk tribometer to evaluate the friction coefficient and wear rate in treated and untreated samples. The worn profiles were measured by visible light microscopy and examined by SEM in order to determine the wear rates and wear mechanisms. Ti-7.5Si-22.5B alloy presented the highest wear resistance amongst the untreated alloys produced in this work. High temperature PIII was effective to reduce the wear rate and friction coefficient of all the Ti-Si-B sintered alloys. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

In this work, surface modification of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy by irradiation with a Nd:YAG laser beam was studied. The matrix spacing was varied and the other parameters were kept constant. After theirradiation, the samples were immersed into SBF solution (Simulated Body Fluid) for 7 days at 37 ° C for nucleation and formation of calcium phosphates. After this period, the samples were subjected to a heat treatment at 600 °C. X-ray diffraction results indicated the formation of a mixture of phases containing hydroxyapatite and tricalcium phosphate. Infrared analysis demonstrated the presence of bands related to hydroxyapatite. SEM micrographs showed that different matrix spacing used leads to the formation of different morphologies. The 0.01 cm spacing induced the formation of microspheres, characteristic of the hydroxyapatite phase, while for 0.02 cm spacing, only a non-homogeneous coating was obtained. Therefore, the use of laser in the production of active surfaces for deposition of bioceramics proved to be viable, and the final coating has potential for applications in the field of dental implants.
