Kinetics of the removal of Eucalyptus grandis wood extractives during Kraft pulping. The objective of this work was to study the kinetics of the removal of Eucalyptus grandis wood extractives during Kraft pulping. The pulping was done in steel tubular reactors using wood saw under the following conditions: active alkali = 14%, sulfidity = 25%; liquor-to-wood ratio = 10 L kg(-1) of dry wood; and temperatures of 130, 150, 160 and 180 C during 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 minutes. After pulping, analyses were conducted of the yield and extractives in residue (pulp and reject). Total extractives (ethyl alcohol-toluene (1:2), ethyl alcohol and hot water, respectively) and soluble extractives in acetone were analyzed. The results showed that most extractives are degraded in the first 30 minutes of the pulping process. It was observed that the removal occurs in two different stages: the first is rapid, where the majority of the extractives are removed, and the last is slow, where few extractives are removed.

An evaluation of the composition of soil cement bricks with construction and demolition waste. Sustainable development requires the existence of a production network that includes the reuse of construction waste for new materials. Current analysis investigates an optimal soil-cement composition made up of construction and demolition waste for the manufacture of pressed bricks. Soil-cement bricks were manufactured from construction and demolition wastes (CDW), A-4 classified fine sandy soil and cement CP II Z 32. Laboratory tests, comprising test compaction, optimum water content and maximum dry specific weight, consistency limits, grain size distribution and linear shrinkage, were made to characterize the materials researched. Compressive strength and absorption tests were also undertaken in different combinations of composition. Results showed that the application of CDW improved soil-cement qualities and reduced shrinkage of the material used.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the residue from cassava, known as manipueira, as an alternative for tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) fertilization. This experiment was carried out in UNESP with the cultivar Rio Grande. The experimental design was a completely randomized blocks in a 3 × 3 factorial arrangement with five blocks. Treatments constituted the following: 1) witness; 2) 54 m3/ha of manipueira; 3) 108 m3/ha of manipueira; 4) half recommended mineral fertilization; 5) half recommended mineral fertilization + 54 m3/ha of manipueira; 6) half recommended mineral fertilization + 108 m3/ha of manipueira; 7) recommended mineral fertilization; 8) recommended mineral fertilization + 54 m3/ha of manipueira and 9) recommended mineral fertilization + 108 m3/ha of manipueira. Tomato yield, number of fruits per plant, fruit diameter and lenght, total soluble solids (TSS), total titratable acidity (TTA) and the ratio TSS/TTA were evaluated. The results obtained indicated that manipueira contributed significantly to yield and quality of pos-harvested tomato fruits.

The erosion caused by running water constitutes important cause of environmental degradation and productivity reduction, which justifies its evaluation in areas of eucalypt commercial plantations, mainly in ondulated slope conditions. The present study was intended to evaluate the influence of different management systems, in an undulated eucalypt pos-planting area, upon soil and water losses by erosion. The experiment was installed in a very clayey Red Latosol (Oxisol) under three eucalypt management systems (downhill planting with burning of crop residues - EDq; downhill planting with maintenance of crop residues on soil surface - ED; level planting with maintenance of crop residues on soil surface - EN), native forest (FN), bare soil (SD), and native pasture (PN). The soil and water losses evaluations were performed in standard plots installed in the field. All eucalypt systems presented very low values of soil losses in relation to the established tolerance limit, indicating the adequacy of these management systems concerning water erosion. The sustainability of these environments regarding erosion is indicated by the fact that soil losses in eucalipt were very close to those observed in native forest (reference).

In the present study, we evaluated three techniques, mouse bioassay, histopathology, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect Toxoplasma gondii infection in tissues from experimentally infected pigs. Twelve mixed breed pigs, seronegative for T. gondii using an indirect immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT), were used. Ten pigs were infected with 4 × 104 VEG strain oocysts, and two were maintained as uninfected controls. Animals were killed 60 days pos infection. Muscle (heart, tongue, diaphragm, and masseter) and brain samples were collected to investigate the presence of T. gondii tissue cysts by the different assay methods. For the bioassay, samples of brain (50 g) and pool of muscle samples (12.5 g of tongue, masseter, diaphragm, and heart) were used. PCR was performed using Tox4 and Tox5 primers which amplified a 529 bp fragment. The DNA extraction and PCR were performed three times, and all tissue samples were tested individually (brain, tongue, masseter, diaphragm, and heart). For histopathology, fragments of tissues were fixed in 10% of buffered formal saline and stained with HE. Histopathological results were all negative. PCR showed 25/150 (16.6%) positive samples, being 17/120 (14.1%) and 8/30 (26.6%) from muscle, and brain tissues, respectively. Tissue cysts of T. gondii were identified by mouse bioassay in 54/98 (55.1%) samples, being 31/48 (64.6%) from muscle samples, and 23/50 (46.0%) from brain samples. Toxoplasma gondii isolation in muscle samples by mouse bioassay was higher than in PCR (P < 0.01). Results indicate that DNA from pig tissues interfered with 529-bp-PCR sensitivity, and mouse bioassay was better than PCR in detecting T. gondii in tissues from pigs. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. The aim of this paper was verifying the effect of the Equex STM Paste and EDTA addition to a Tris-egg yolk extender, on the postthaw goat sperm viability. Nine semen samples of two adult goats were collected by artificial vagina and cryopreserved. It was also objective of this study, to evaluate the utilization of a soybean lecithin based commercial extender (Bioexcell® - IMV, L'Aigle, French) for the goat semen freezing. They were formed five experimental groups: TRIS; TRIS+EDTA; TRIS+EQUEX; TRIS+EDTA+EQUEX e Bioexcell. After evaluation, the semen was diluted in the five extenders and packed in 0.25mL straws with 100 million of motile spermatozoa. The samples were cooled at 0,46°C/min to 5°C, submitted at 75min of equilibration time and frozen in liquid nitrogen vapour. The thawing was accomplished in 37°C water bath for 50s. There were no differences (P>0,05) on the means of post-thaw total and progressive sperm motility among the groups TRIS, TRIS+EQUEX and TRIS+EQUEX+EDTA. The Bioexcell group obtained the least (P<0,05) percentage of post-thawing total and progressive sperm motility. After the thermotolerance test, it was observed the greatest (P<0,05) rates of total and progressive sperm motility in the Equex STM groups (TRIS+EQUEX and TRIS+EQUEX+EDTA). Thus, it can be affirmed that the Equex addition promotes better maintenance rates in the pos-thaw sperm viability, when compared with the extenders that did not contain it.

In this work we investigate a possible magnetic moment generation for massive neutral particles with spins-1 and -2 coupled non-minimally, in a specific way, to an external electromagnetic field. It is found that, in the nonrelativistic limit, these particles present g = 1. This result, worked out in the framework of Relativistic Quantum Mechanics, seems to suggest that g = 1 for all massive and neutral particles of any spin ≤ 2. We also compare with the results obtained for massive charged particles of spins-1 and -2, in the same regime (nonrelativistic), in order to investigate the role played by the spin separetely from the charge. In this paper we present the torsion influence in a braneworld scenario, developing the bulk metric Taylor expansion around the brane. This generalization is presented in order to better probe braneworld properties in a Riemann-Cartan framework, and it is also shown how the factors involving contorsion change the effective Einstein equation on the brane, the effective cosmological constant, and their consequence in a Taylor expansion of the bulk metric around the brane. We derive an one-parameter family of consistency conditions to braneworlds in the Brans-Dicke gravity. The General Relativity case is recovered by taking a correct limit of the Brans-Dicke parameter. We show that it is possible to build a multiple AdS brane scenario in a six-dimensional bulk only if the brane tensions are negative. Besides, in the five-dimensional case, it is showed that no fine tuning is necessary between the bulk cosmological constant and the brane tensions, in contrast to the Randall-Sundrum model. In this work we discuss the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism for fields on the null-plane. The Real Scalar Field in (1+1) - dimensions is studied since in it lays crucial points that are presented in more structured fields as the Electromagnetic case. The Hamilton-Jacobi formalism leads to the equations of motion for these systems after computing their respective Generalized Brackets. A few properties of the nonminimal vector interaction in the Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau theory in the scalar sector are revised. In particular, it is shown that the nonminimal vector interaction has been erroneously applied to the description of elastic meson-nucleus scatterings and that the space component of the nonminimal vector interaction plays a peremptory role for the confinement of bosons whereas its time component contributes to the leakage. Scattering in a square step potential is used to show that Klein's paradox does not manifest in the case of a nonminimal vector coupling. We have analyzed the null-plane canonical structure of Podolsky's electromagnetic theory. As a theory that contains higher order derivatives in the Lagrangian function, it was necessary to redefine the canonical momenta related to the field variables. We were able to find a set of first and second-class constraints, and also to derive the field equations of the system. Recent progress in the solution of Schwinger-Dyson equations (SDE), as well as lattice simulation of pure glue QCD, indicate that the gluon propagator and coupling constant are infrared (IR) finite. We discuss how this non-perturbative information can be introduced into the QCD perturbative expansion in a consistent scheme, showing some examples of tree level hadronic reactions that successfully fit the experimental data with the gluon propagator and coupling constant depending on a dynamically generated gluon mass. This infrared mass scale acts as a natural cutoff and eliminates some of the ad hoc parameters usually found in perturbative QCD calculations. The application of these IR finite Green's functions in the case of higher order terms of the perturbative expansion is commented. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike Licence.

A challenge in mesonic three-body decays of heavy mesons is to quantify the contribution of re-scattering between the final mesons. D decays have the unique feature that make them a key to light meson spectroscopy, in particular to access the Kn S-wave phase-shifts. We built a relativis-tic three-body model for the final state interaction in D+ → K -π+π+ decay based on the ladder approximation of the Bethe-Salpeter equation projected on the light-front. The decay amplitude is separated in a smooth term, given by the direct partonic decay amplitude, and a three-body fully interacting contribution, that is factorized in the standard two-meson resonant amplitude times a reduced complex amplitude that carries the effect of the three-body rescattering mechanism. The off-shell reduced amplitude is a solution of an inhomogeneous Faddeev type three-dimensional integral equation, that includes only isospin 1/2 K -π+ interaction in the S-wave channel. The elastic K-π+ scattering amplitude is parameterized according to the LASS data[1]. The integral equation is solved numerically and preliminary results are presented and compared to the experimental data from the E791 Collaboration[2, 3] and FOCUS Collaboration[4, 5].
