Bismuth was evaluated as an internal standard for the direct determination of Pb in vinegar by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry using Ru as a permanent modifier with co-injection of Pd/Mg(NO3)(2). The correlation coefficient of the graph plotted from the non-nalized absorbance signals of Bi versus Pb was r=0.989. Matrix effects were evaluated by analyzing the slope ratios between the analytical curve, and analytical curves obtained from Pb additions in red and white wine vinegar obtained from reference solutions prepared in 0.2% (v/v) HNO3, samples. The calculated ratios were around 1.04 and 1.02 for analytical curves established applying an internal standard and 1.3 and 1.5 for analvtical curves without. Analytical curves in the 2.5-15 pg L-1 Pb concentration interval were established using the ratio Pb absorbance to Bi absorbance versus analvte concentration, and typical linear correlations of r=0.999 were obtained. The proposed method was applied for direct determination of Pb in 18 commercial vinegar samples and the Pb concentration varied from 2.6 to 31 pg L-1. Results were in agreement at a 95% confidence level (paired t-test) with those obtained for digested samples. Recoveries of Pb added to vinegars varied from 96 to 108% with and from 72 to 86% without an internal standard. Two water standard reference materials diluted in vinegar sample were also analyzed and results were in agreement with certified values at a 95% confidence level. The characteristic mass was 40 pg Pb and the useful lifetime of the tube was around 1600 firings. The limit of detection was 0.3 mu g L-1 and the relative standard deviation was <= 3.8% and <= 8.3% (n = 12) for a sample containing, 10 mu L-1 Pb with and without internal standard, respectively. A method is proposed for the simultaneous determination of Al, As, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Ni in fuel ethanol by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS) using W-Rh permanent modifier together with Pd(NO3)(2) + Mg(NO3)(2) conventional modifier. The integrated platform of a transversely heated graphite atomizer (THGA) was treated with tungsten, followed by rhodium, forming a deposit containing 250 mug W + 200 mug Rh. A 500-muL, volume of fuel ethanol was diluted with 500 muL, of 0.14 mol L-1 HNO3 in an autosampler cup of the spectrometer. Then, 20 muL, of the diluted ethanol was introduced into the pretreated graphite platform followed by the introduction of 5 mug Pd(NO3)(2) + 3 mug Mg(NO3)(2). The injection of this modifier was required to improve arsenic and iron recoveries in fuel ethanol. Calibrations were carried out using multi-element reference solutions prepared in diluted ethanol (1 + 1, v/v) acidified to 0. 14 mol L-1 HNO3. The pyrolysis and atomization temperatures of the heating program were 1200degreesC and 2200degreesC, respectively, which were obtained with multielement reference solutions in acidic diluted ethanol (1 + 1, v/v; 0. 14 mol L-1 HNO3). The characteristic masses for the simultaneous determination in ethanol fuel were 78 pg Al, 33 pg As, 10 pg Cu, 14 pg Fe, 7 pg Mn, and 24 pg Ni. The lifetime of the pretreated tube was about 700 firings. The detection limits (D.L.) were 1.9 mug L-1 Al, 2.9 mug L-1 As, 0.57 mug L-1.Cu, 1.3 mug L-1 Fe, 0.40 mug L-1 Mn, and 1.3 mug L-1 Ni. The relative standard deviations (n = 12) were 4%, 4%, 3%, 1.5%, 1.2%, and 2.2% for Al, As, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Ni, respectively. The recoveries of Al, As, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Ni added to the fuel ethanol samples varied from 81% to 95%, 80% to 98%, 97% to 109%, 85% to 107%, 98% to 106% and 97% to 103%, respectively. Accuracy was checked for the Al, As, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Ni determination in 10 samples purchased at a local gas station in Araraquara-SP City, Brazil. A paired t-test showed that at the 95% confidence level the results were in agreement with those obtained by single-element ETAAS.

The aim of this study was to evaluate, through histologic examination, the effect of surgical repositioning of intruded dog teeth upon the pulpal and surrounding tissues. Thirty teeth in 10 adult dogs, aged 2-3 years, were used. Fifteen teeth were intruded, surgically repositioned and fixed using orthodontics wire, composite resin, and enamel acid conditioning. All these teeth served as the experimental group. The remaining intruded teeth were not treated ( control group). The animals were sacrificed to allow observations at 7,15, and 30 post-operative days. The maxillary and mandibular archs were removed and processed for histologic exam. Based on the methodology and observed results, we concluded that: pulpal necrosis, external root resorption and ankylosis were common sequelae to severe traumatic intrusion; a careful immediate surgical repositioning of severed intruded permanent tooth with complete root formation has many advantages with few disadvantages.

This work aims to present the design and the evaluation of a standard multi-pole machine with permanent magnets inserted in the rotor by two different geometrical forms: aligned and skewed magnets. The design (new analytical method) was based on a standard 250 W three phase 12-pole induction motor (squirrel cage rotor type), beginning with the original stator constructive data to calculate the magnetic flux density to determine the permanent magnets. In the development of the work, a simple and modular rotor was built reusing the original 12-pole stator (concentrated windings). The machine was evaluated in a laboratory for the purpose of checking the quantity and quality of energy produced with the machine operating as a generator and its start, torque, and performance working as a motor. In conclusion, the modular skewed magnet is an option for electrical machines, for the generation of a reasonable quality, in the context of decentralized generation and a motor with high torque and low energetic consumption.

The purpose of this case report was to describe the successful long-term conservative management of a root-fractured permanent maxillary right central incisor in an 8-year-old patient. After the initial approach of splinting the traumatized tooth, the patient was followed on a regular basis for 15 years. Clinically, the crown of the root-fractured incisor showed no displacement or discoloration, and thermal tests suggested pulp vitality over the follow-up period. Radiographically, an increase in the diastasis was observed between the apical and coronal fragments due to both the growth of the alveolar process and the healing with interposition of hard and soft tissue between the fragments and confirmed with computed tomography scan in the 15-year follow-up appointment. Pulpal and periodontal tissues of immature incisors of 10 dogs were radiographically and histopathologically evaluated immediately, 7, 15, 30 and 60 days after experimental intrusion induced by mechanical blows. Forty upper central and mesial lateral incisors showing incomplete root formation on radiographs were submitted to intrusive force. After the observation periods, the dogs were killed, two at a time. The hemi-maxilas were removed and processed for histopathologic examination. The traumatized teeth showed accelerated apical formation with reduced radicular length. Pulpal vitality was maintained and the subjacent tissues did not present irreversible changes. All traumatized teeth re-erupted spontaneously.

The premature loss of primary teeth may harm the normal occlusal development, although there are debates relating to the necessity of using space maintainer appliances. The aim of the study is to evaluate the changes in the dental arch perimeter and the space reduction after the premature loss of the lower first primary molar in the mixed dentition stage. The sample consists of 4 lower arch plaster models of 31 patients, within the period of pre-extraction, 6, 12 and 18 months after the lower first primary molar extraction. A reduction of space was noted with the cuspid dislocation and the permanent incisors moving toward the space of the extraction site. It was concluded that the lower first molar primary premature loss, during the mixed dentition, implicates an immediate placement of a space maintainer.

Frieseomelitta varia worker bees do not lay eggs even when living in queenless colonies, a condition that favors ovary development and oviposition in the majority of highly social bees. The permanent sterility of these worker bees was initially attributed to a failure in ovary morphogenesis and differentiation. Using transmission electron microscopy we found that at the beginning of the pupal phase the ovaries of F. varia workers are formed by four ovarioles, each of them composed of 1) a terminal filament at the apex of the ovarioles, containing juxtaposed and irregularly shaped cells, 2) a germarium with clusters of cystocytes and prefollicular cells showing long cytoplasmic projections that envelop the cystocyte clusters, 3) fusiform interfollicular and basal stalk precursor cells, and 4) globular, irregularly contoured basal cells with large nuclei. However, during the pupal phase an accentuated and progressive process of cell death takes place in the ovarioles. The dying cells are characterized by large membrane bodies, electron-dense apoptotic bodies, vacuoles, vesiculation, secondary lysosomes, enlarged rough endoplasmic reticulum cisternae, swollen mitochondria, pycnotic nuclei, masses of chromatin adjacent to the convoluted nuclear envelope, and nucleoli showing signs of fragmentation. Cell death continues in ovarioles even after the emergence of the workers. Once they become nurse bees, the ovaries have become transformed into a cell mass in which structurally organized ovarioles can no longer be identified. In F. varia workers, ovariole cell death most certainly is part of the program of caste differentiation.
