Knowledge of the effectiveness of prostaglandins in uterine involution process led to the development of protocols with its analogues in postpartum period. However, this hormone mechanism of action is not yet fully elucidated. Thus, the objective of this study was to verify if chloprostenol administration, at early or intermediary puerperium, can induce changes on progesterone, PGFM and oestradiol plasma concentrations. 30 Murrah postpartum buffaloes were randomly divided into three groups: CONT (saline, n = 10); CLO2 (chloprostenol at days 2 and 5 postpartum, n = 10) and; CLO15 (chloprostenol at days 15 and 20 postpartum, n = 10). Blood samples were collected from jugular vein to measure progesterone, PGFM and oestradiol plasma concentrations at days 2, 7, 14, 21 and 28 postpartum. CLO2 group presented lower progesterone and PGFM plasma concentrations in relation to CONT and CLO15 groups (0.23 +/- 0.00 and 0.32 +/- 0.11, 0.19 +/- 0.00 and 0.23 +/- 0.11, 0.23 +/- 0.00 and 0.30 +/- 0.19, for groups CONT, CLO2 and CLO15, respectively; P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in oestradiol plasma concentration between experimental groups (P > 0.05). Prostaglandin synthetic analogue administration induced hormonal changes in postpartum buffaloes, which can partially explain its positive effect under reproductive function of this specie.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of chloprostenol administration, at early or intermediary puerperium, under uterine involution, intrauterine fluid accumulation and ovarian activity return. 30 Murrah postpartum buffaloes were randomly divided into three groups: CONT (saline, n = 10); CLO2 (chloprostenol at days 2 and 5 postpartum, n = 10) and; CLO15 (chloprostenol at days 15 and 20 postpartum, n = 10). Gynecological exams were performed at days 2, 7, 14, 21 and 28 postpartum, when uterine involution degree (1 to 3 scale, by transrectal palpation), intrauterine fluid accumulation (0 to 3 scale, by ultrasound exam) and ovarian activity (B-mode ultrasound exam) were evaluated. CLO2 group presented higher uterine involution (2.00 +/- 0.23, 1.66 +/- 0.23, 1.58 +/- 0.23 for groups CLO2, CONT and CLO15, respectively) and faster ovarian activity return in relation to groups CONT and CLO15 (P < 0.05). Groups CLO2 and CLO15 showed lower intrauterine fluid accumulation compared to CONT group (2.04 +/- 0.20, 1.58 +/- 0.20, 1.92 +/- 0.20 for groups CONT, CLO2 and CLO15, respectively; P < 0.05). Prostaglandin analogue administration in postpartum buffalo benefited uterine involution, lochia expulsion and ovarian activity return, improving reproductive efficiency in this specie.

No in situ protocol has assessed the dose-response effects of fluoride dentifrices involving low-fluoride formulations. Objective: To assess the ability of an in situ remineralization model in determining dose-response effects of dentifrices containing low fluoride concentrations ([F]) on bovine enamel. Material and Methods: Volunteers wore palatal appliances containing demineralized enamel blocks and brushed their teeth and devices with the dentifrices supplied (double-blind, crossover protocol) separately for 3 and 7 days. Surface hardness (SH), integrated subsurface hardness (AKHN) and [F] in enamel were determined. Data were analyzed by ANOVA, Tukey's test and Pearson's correlation (p<0.05). Results: Dose-response relationships were verified between [F] in dentifrices and SH, AKHN and enamel [F]. Higher correlation coefficients between enamel [F] and SH and AKHN were obtained for the 3-day period. Significant differences in SH and AKHN were observed among all groups for the 3-day period, but not between 0-275, 275-550, and 550-1,100 mu g F/g dentifrices for the 7-day period, nor between 3- and 7-day periods for the 1,100 mu g F/g groups. Conclusions: Considering that the peak remineralization capacity of the conventional dentifrice (1,100 mu g F/g) was achieved in 3 days, this experimental period could be used in future studies assessing new dentifrice formulations, especially at low-fluoride concentrations.

The purpose of the study was to examine the relationships between intermittent high-intensity efforts (RAST) parameters and variables related to aerobic metabolism (anaerobic threshold; LAN, maximal oxygen uptake; VO2MAX and velocity correspondent to VO2MAX; iVO(2MAX)). Eight under-17 (U17) soccer players (16 +/- 1 years) participated in the study. The participants were submitted to a graded exercise test and six maximal sprints of 35m with 10 seconds of passive recovery between each effort (RAST). The RAST parameters were not significant correlated with VO2MAX and LAN. However absolute and relative mean power were significantly correlated with iVO(2MAX) (r=0.79 e r=0.85, respectively). Furthermore, the fatigue index and the relative peak power were significantly correlated with the iVO(2MAX) (r=-0,57 e r=0,73, respectively). In conclusion, the only aerobic variable correlated with performance in consecutive efforts with brief recovery periods, such as RAST, is iVO(2MAX).

This work evaluated the beef quality parameters of 108 bulls randomly administered to three treatments during rearing in pastures and two treatments during fatting in feedlots, including mineral and rumen-protected lipids. Meat and fat color, cooking yield, shear force, sensorial traits and chemical and fatty acid compositions were evaluated. Generally, the beef quality parameters were not affected by the rumen protected lipids; however, supplementation with rumen-protected lipids during the rearing period yielded darker beef and brighter fat and increased beef tenderness in meat aged for 28 days compared to the meat from animals that received only mineral supplementation. In addition, the percent of meat polyunsaturated fatty acids was negatively affected by the inclusion of protected lipids, yielding 5.58 and 3.72% in animals fed with and without rumen-protected lipids, respectively, during the fatting period. The effect of salivary exposure time on the abrasive wear of acid-eroded dentine was evaluated in situ. One-hundred and twenty bovine root dentine slabs were randomly assigned into six groups (A-F) and placed in intraoral palatal devices, which were worn by 10 volunteers for 4 d. On the first day, no erosive/abrasive procedures were carried out. On the following 3 d, erosive challenges were performed extraorally, two times per day, by immersing the device for 90 s in a soft drink. Subsequently, the group A specimens were immediately brushed (40 strokes), and the others were brushed after the following times: B, 20 min; C, 40 min; and D, 60 min. Group E specimens were only acid-eroded and those of group F were only brushed. Dentine wear was measured with a profilometer. ANOVA and Dunnett's test showed that groups A-D did not differ statistically from the control group E but differed from the control group F. The lowest mean value was found for group F. Regression analysis was unable to show salivary effect on dentine wear reduction. The data suggest that the exposure time of saliva of up to 60 min has no effect on reducing the eroded dentine wear by toothbrushing.

The ankle sprains represent the most common injuries in sports and basketball. In this sense, the use of ankle bracing and strength capacity analysis of the ankle evertor and invertor muscles, have been suggested as preventive measures and important tools for identifying risk factors associated with ankle sprains. However, questions still persist as to effect of the use ankle bracing on biomechanical variables related to the stability of the ankle. For this reason, this study aims to analyze the effect of the use of ankle bracing on peak torque (PT) of ankle evertor and invertor muscles and on eccentric evertor/concentric invertor torque ratio (EVEECC/INVCON), during the basketball match-play simulation. Ten healthy college basketball players, without mechanics or functional ankle instability performed a laboratory-based protocol representative of work rates observed during basketball match-play, in two different situations, with and without use of ankle bracing. The test was composed of a succession of intermittent physical effort equally distributed in four periods of 10 minutes each, considering the mechanical and physiological demands of a basketball match-play. Prior to the start of the trial (Evaluation 1) and after 2° (Evaluation 2) and 4° (Evaluation 3) periods, the subjects performed five maximal isokinetic concentric and eccentric contractions of ankle invertor and evertor muscles, separated by two minutes rest, at 60 °/s and 120 °/s. After testing for normality of data distribution with the Shapiro-Wilk test, was used the ANOVA repeated measures for two factors and post-hoc Bonferroni test for comparison of variables between assessments. Was adopted p < 0.05. There was no significant difference for PT and EVEECC/INVCON torque ratio between assessments.
