Theoretical molecular structures of the complexes cis-[PdCl2(tmen)] and cis-[Pd(N-3)(2)(tmen)] (tmen = N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine) were investigated using B3LYP/DFT method. The calculated molecular parameters, bond distances and angles, revealed a square-planar geometry around the metallic center for both compounds with the azide being linear. The theoretical infrared spectra of C, symmetry (electronic state (1)A) of the compounds are in agreement with the experimental data. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Synthesis, characterization and thermal behavior of four compounds that have the general formula [Cu{Pd(CN)(4)}(L)(x)](n), in which en = 1,2-diaminoethane and pn = 1,3-diaminopropane (L = en, x = 1 (I); L = pn, x = 1 (II); L = en, x = 2 (III); L = pn, x = 2 (IV)) were described in this work. The complexes were studied by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy (IR), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermogravimetry (TG) and the residues of the thermal decomposition were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and found as a mixture of CuO and PdO. The stoichiometry of the compounds was established via thermogravimetric and elemental analyses and their structures were proposed as coordination polymers based on their infrared spectra. The following thermal stability sequence was found: IV < I=II < III.

Ruthenium(II) complexes with general formula [RuCl3(NO)(P-P)] were obtained in the solid state, where P-P = PPh(2)(CH2)(n)PPh(2) (n = 1-3) and PPh(2)-CH = CH-PPh(2). The P-31 NMR spectra of these compounds measured in CH2Cl2 showed only singlets, consistent with a fac configuration containing two equivalent phosphorus atoms, However the X-ray diffraction data show that the [RuCl3(NO){PPh(2)(CH2)(3)PPh(2)}] complex crystallizes in a met configuration, where one of the phosphorus atoms is trans to the NO group, in a slightly distorted octahedral geometry. Tin(II) complexes with 8-hydroxyquinolinate in solid state have been obtained by adding aqueous ammonium to a solution containing stannous chloride and 8-hydroxiquinoline in medium of HCl and acetone up to pH 5 and 9, respectively. The products obtained show the same composition, Sn(C9H6ON)(2); however there are some differences regarding both the thermal behaviour in an oxidant atmosphere and morphology. These products were characterised by elemental and complexometric analysis, TG and DTA curves, infrared and X-ray diffractometry. TG curves show, above 448 K, the partial oxidation on air atmosphere of Sn(II) complexes to Sn(IV) complexes, SnO(C9H6ON)(2). This behaviour does not depend only on pH in which the compounds were obtained but also on the heating rate in TG curves. Sn(II) complexes volatilise almost completely on nitrogen atmosphere and partially on air atmosphere depending on the oxidation degree of the compound.

A new platinum(II) complex with deoxyalliin was synthesized and characterized by chemical and spectroscopic techniques. Elemental and mass spectrometry analyses of the solid complex fit to the composition [Pt(C6H11NO2S)Cl-2] center dot H2O. C-13 NMR, N-15 NMR and infrared spectra of the complex are consistent with coordination of deoxyalliin to Pt( II) through the nitrogen and sulfur atoms forming a square-planar geometry. The complex is soluble in dimethylsulfoxide. Biological analysis for evaluation of a potential cytotoxic effect of the complex was performed using HeLa cells, a human cervix adenocarcinoma-derived cell line. The results were compared with those of a palladium( II) complex previously described.

The low-weight Pd(II) coordination polymers [(N(3))(HL)Pd {Pd(3)(mu-N(3))(mu-L)(5)}10(mu-L)(2)Pd(L)(HL)]{L = Pz(-) (1); mPz(-) (2), IPz(-)(3)} and [(N(3))(HPz)Pd{Pd(6)(mu-N(3))(2)(mu-PZ)(5)(mu-L)(5)}(10)(mu-L)(2)Pd(Pz)(HPz)] {L = mPz(-) (4), dmPz(-) (5); IPz(-) (6)} {L = pyrazolate (Pz(-)), 4-methylpyrazolate(mPz(-)), 4-iodopyrazo late (IPz(-)), 3,5-dimethylpyrazolate (dmPz(-))} have been prepared in this work. IR spectra clearly indicated the exobidentate nature of pyrazolato ligands as well the end-on coordination mode of the azido group. The molecular weight determinations by osmometry indicated that the species have a low degree of polymerization (n = 10). NMR experiments showed two pyrazolate environments in a 2:1 ratio, being assigned to the six-membered ring Pd(mu-L)(2)Pd and the Pd(mu-N(3))(mu-L)Pd metallocycle, respectively. UV-visible spectroscopy gave further evidences for the oligomeric structures of 1-6. Some alternative structures for the isostructural polymers have been suggested. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. The kinetics of the reactions of Ru(II) complexes with CS2N- 3 ions were studied spectrophotometrically. The formation rate constants data for trans-[Ru(NH3)4L(CS2N3)] are 2.2 × 102, 1.8 × 10 and 1.3 × 102 M-1 s-1 for L = SO2- 3, HSO- 3 and P(OEt)3), respectively [μ = 1.0 M (NaCF3COO), 25°C]. Under the same experimental conditions, the values of k-1 (specific rate for the aquation reaction) are 1.5 × 10-2, 5.0 × 10-2 and 4.5 × 10 s-1 for L = SO2- 3, HSO- 3 and P(OEt)3, respectively. The free-energy change (ΔG≠) for the systems where L = P(OEt)3 and SO2- 3 are in agreement within the experimental error. It was observed that the affinity of the CS2N- 3 ion decreases with the increasing π-acidity of the auxiliary ligand L. The order of affinity of the CS2N- 3 ion for the Ru(II) center studies is SO2- 3 > HSO- 3 > P(OEt)3 >SO2. © 1986.

The aquatic humic substances (HS) investigated in this study with respect to their binding capability towards mercury(II) were isolated from the river Rio Negro, Amazonas State - Brazil, by means of the adsorbent XAD 8. Labile/inert fractions of inorganic Hg(II) complexes formed with these HS were characterized using an ion-exchange batch and column technique, respectively, based on Chelite S. This collector exhibits high Hg(II) distribution coefficients, Kd, up to the order of 104 decreasing, however, in the case of small Hg(II)/HS ratios (< 0.1 μg Hg(II) / mg HS). The influence of different complexation parameters (ratio of Hg(II)/HS, pH, contact time, complexing time) relevant for Hg(II) binding in aquatic environments was assessed. The Hg(II) lability in dissolved HS is mainly influenced by the mass ratio of Hg(II)/HS and the ageing of Hg(II)-HS species formed. This is particularly obvious in the case of low Hg(II) loading of HS where slow transformation processes of freshly formed Hg(II)-HS species significantly decrease their lability, leading to incomplete recoveries (< 20%) of the total Hg(II) bound to HS.

A new palladium chelate compound is described for the determination of sulfide in aqueous samples. The reagent, bis(2-aminobenzoate)palladium(II) (PdA 2), was prepared by reaction of tetrachloropalladate (PdCl 4 -) with 2-aminobenzoic acid. The compound was characterized by infrared spectroscopy and CHN elemental analysis. The measurement was based on the selective reaction of PdA 2 with sulfide in an aqueous medium, which quantitatively produced fluorescent 2-aminobenzoate (λ ex=245nm, λ em=410nm). The analytical response was linear in the range 0.10-20.0μmol (S 2-) L -1 (r>0.99), with a limit of detection of 0.075μmolL -1 and repeatability (RSD) of 3.4%. There was no interference from CO 3 2-, NO 3 -, Cl -, SO 4 2-, Br -, NO 2 -, K +, NH 4 +, Na +, citrate or S 2O 8 2-. The fluorescence intensity decreased in the presence of H 3CCOO -, PO 4 3- and SCN -, while OH - caused a positive interference. The new fluorescent compound was successfully applied for the determination of sulfide in synthetic wastewater and natural water sample. The advantages of the proposed palladium chelate are absence of toxic by-products, simple synthesis procedure of reagent and yield reaction of about 85%, easy handling and fast acquirement of analytical signal. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.
