The surgical treatment of mandibular condyle fractures currently offers several possibilities for stable internal fixation. In this study, a finite element model evaluation was performed of three different methods for osteosynthesis of low subcondylar fractures: (1) two four-hole straight plates, (2) one seven-hole lambda plate, and (3) one four-hole trapezoidal plate. The finite element model evaluation considered a load applied to the first molar on the contralateral side to the fracture. Results showed that, although the three methods are capable of withstanding functional loading, the lambda plate displayed a more homogeneous stress distribution for both osteosynthesis material and bone and may be a better method when single-plate fixation is the option.

The common practice in industry is to perform flutter analyses considering the generalized stiffness and mass matrices obtained from finite element method (FEM) and aerodynamic generalized force matrices obtained from a panel method, as the doublet lattice method. These analyses are often reperformed if significant differences are found in structural frequencies and damping ratios determined from ground vibration tests compared to FEM. This unavoidable rework can result in a lengthy and costly process of analysis during the aircraft development. In this context, this paper presents an approach to perform flutter analysis including uncertainties in natural frequencies and damping ratios. The main goal is to assure the nominal system’s stability considering these modal parameters varying in a limited range. The aeroelastic system is written as an affine parameter model and the robust stability is verified solving a Lyapunov function through linear matrix inequalities and convex optimization

This study aimed to develop a plate to treat fractures of the mandibular body in dogs and to validate the project using finite elements and biomechanical essays. Mandible prototypes were produced with 10 oblique ventrorostral fractures (favorable) and 10 oblique ventrocaudal fractures (unfavorable). Three groups were established for each fracture type. Osteosynthesis with a pure titanium plate of double-arch geometry and blocked monocortical screws offree angulanon were used. The mechanical resistance of the prototype with unfavorable fracture was lower than that of the fcworable fracture. In both fractures, the deflection increased and the relative stiffness decreased proportionally to the diminishing screw number The finite element analysis validated this plate study, since the maximum tension concentration observed on the plate was lower than the resistance limit tension admitted by the titanium. In conclusion, the double-arch geometry plate fixed with blocked monocortical screws has sufficient resistance to stabilize oblique,fractures, without compromising mandibular dental or neurovascular structures. Flavonoid compounds were analyzed in ripe fruit pulp of ten species of Coffea, including two cultivars of C. arabica and two of C. canephora. Three coefficients of similarity: Simple-Matching, Jaccard and Ochiai and three different clustering methods, Single Linkage, Complete Linkage and Unweighted Pair Group, Using Arithmetic Averages (UPGMA), were used to analyze the data.Jaccard and Ochiai's coefficients of association showed a more coherent result, when compared with taxonomic and hybridization studies. Inclusion of Psilanthopsis kapakata in the genus Coffea, as C. kapakata, is justified by the similarity of this species with other studied species, and clusters clearly approximate the species C. arabica and C. eugenioides. The latter is one of the possible parents of the allotetraploid species C. arabica, C. congensis is the only species whose position remains ambiguous, probably due to the fact that the plants of this species that were introduced into the Campinas collections, were hybrids and not typical of C. congensis.

This paper presents a finite element numerical solution of free convection in a cavity with side walls maintained at constant but different temperatures. The predictions from the model and the method of solution were validated by comparison with the 'bench mark' solution and Vahl Davis' results and good agreement was found. The present model was used to obtain additional results over a wide range of Rayleigh number (10(3)-10(6)) and L/H ratios varying from 0.1 to 1.0. The predicted stream function patterns, temperature and velocity profiles as well as the mean Nusselt number were presented and discussed. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.
PHYLOGENETIC STUDIES OF SOME SPECIES OF THE GENUS COFFEA .2. NUMERICAL-ANALYSIS OF ISOENZYMATIC DATA

Thirteen species of Coffea were studied for five enzymes systems, including alpha and beta esterase, alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, malate dehydrogenase and acid dehydrogenase. Three coefficients of similarity: Simple Matching, Jaccard and Ochiai and three different clustering methods: Single Linkage, Complete Linkage and Unweighted Pair Group, using Arithmetic Averages (UPGMA) were used to analyse the data.The phylogenetic relationships among the twelve diploid species and between them and the tetraploid species C. arabica showed that similarity among species of the same subsection is not always greater than among species of different subsections. In addition, although there are several similarity groups in common, established by isoenzymatic polymorphism, morphological characteristics, chemical data, crossability and geographic distribution, there is no common trend among the phylogenetic relationships as indicated by all these different evaluating procedures.

Group theoretical-based techniques and fundamental results from number theory are used in order to allow for the construction of exact projectors in finite-dimensional spaces. These operators are shown to make use only of discrete variables, which play the role of discrete generator coordinates, and their application in the number symmetry restoration is carried out in a nuclear BCS wave function which explicitly violates that symmetry. © 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. This work intends to analyze the application and execution time of a numerical algorithm that simulates incompressible and isothermal flows. It was used the explicit scheme of the Characteristic Based Split (CBS) algorithm and the Artificial Compressibility (AC) scheme for coupling pressure-velocity equations. The discretization was done with the finite element method using a bilinear elements grid. The free software GNU-Octave was used for implementation and execution of routines. The results were analyzed using the classic lid-driven cavity problem. This work shows results for tests with several Reynolds' number. The results for these tests show a good agreement when compared with previous ones obtained from bibliography. The code runtime's analysis shows yet that the matrix's assembly is the part of greater consumption time in the implementation.
