The search for energy efficiency improvement is a common concern in many companies. Cogeneration is a well known technique but not so spread in Brazil, despite its potential for energy costs reduction through heat recovery from prime movers. In this work, a preliminary technical and economic study is carried out for a cogeneration plant application in an automotive industry of São Paulo. Though mathematics modeling, three 2435 kW internal combustion engines are selected. When compared to the current status (no cogeneration), annual savings of about 2,2 MR$ are obtained, resulting a almost 3 years payback

The project has as objective to adjust the model QUAL2K to “Ribeirão Claro” river to evaluate the behavior of OD and DBO when are simulated the following sceneries: (i) implantation of a hypothetic wastewater station treatment that treats all the effluent thrown nowadays in the body of water; (ii) increase of withdrawal flow of DAAE to public supply and (iii) increase of nowadays flow of wastewater throwing, being the two last caused for the population increasing. The results obtained allowed to conclude that the model QUAL2K presented a good adjustment to the variable OD and a reasonable adjustment to the variable DBO, being that the same was suitable to the simulation of the sceneries proposed.

The purpose of this work is to perform studies of mathematical modeling of the relationship of interaction occurring between microrganisms participants from wastewater treatment processes aimed at understanding, through simulations, such as inter-relationships can affect the performance of such units. The methodology was the implementation in FORTRAN computer language of mathematical models of microbial interactions. The first model addresses the interaction of bacteria-forming flakes and filamentous bacteria in activated sludge systems, which seeks to strike a balance between these bacteria to improve efficiency of the process. Another model is studied the interaction between bacteria and protozoa in activated sludge systems and analyzing the efficiency of the process, observing the changes in daily load. Microbial interactions in anaerobic reactors were dealt a third model, in which there is the mutualistic interaction between acidogenic and methanogenic bacteria. In a fourth and final model was examined the relationship between the bacteria Acinetobacter sp. and Gordonia sp., which are present in activated sludge systems, showing the competitive capacity of Acinetobacter sp. can control the growth of unwanted bacteria.

The study of mathematical modeling assists in evaluation of the capacity of production and measurement of generation time of biogas in landfills, enabling the implantation of projects of energy generation from methane. Thus, the work aims, by simulating scenarios of potential methane generation in the landfill in Rio Claro, the use of field data from methane flow and waste grounded parameters as references for selecting values of k e L0 used to estimate methane generation model in LandGEM. As a result it was found that compared the characteristics adopted in the four scenarios recommended by the USEPA literature with those found in the landfill of Rio Claro (high amount of organic matter in the waste landed and daily practice of leachate recirculation), the scenario that apparently better represent the rate of methane generation is the scenario 01, with k = 0.7 and L0 = 96. Now, the adjustment of parameters in relation to the data field of methane flow, the value of L0 which best fits the methane generation from the landfill in Rio Claro is 150, while for k the line behavior that best represents the reality are values between 0.7 and 0.3. Regarding the parameters of the waste grounded, between the suggested values of k, 0,3 is most consistent with the intermediate level of biological degradation of the residue grounded, while L0 due to the biodegradability of the waste, a new value between 120 and 150 may be more appropriate for the study

This work performs a comparative study of fatigue life of riveted lap joints involving classes of drilling which adjustment is made with interference or clearance. For this study, representative specimens of this joints were manufactured with four rivets distributed in two rows. In this context, are presented the test matrix, the methodology employed in performing of the tests, the used mathematical modeling, and that methods that are the basis for the latter are described through the theoretical foundation. Next, are present the results obtained in fatigue tests and images of the region of failure of the specimens. Finally, are present some comments and conclusions related to the results obtained

In this work, some aspects of the erythrocyte cycle of the malaria parasite was incorporated into a cellular automata model to simulated the major factors leading to disruption of the erythrocyte cycle and consequent appearance of gametocytes, which infected the mosquitoes. Furthermore, the time seies of parasitaemia of infected patients was analyzed and compared to simulated data. The results suggested that differences in the temporal patterns of the asexual parasitaemia are associated with different effectiveness of the immune system in controlling the infection

Operational Research (OR) is an eminent science to business competitiveness and the capacity of algorithms and spreadsheets that exist today allows people to apply them for a lower cost and with less complexity. However, spreadsheets linked to OR techniques, when directed to real problems, are still little explored in their full potential. In order to use them better, this article utilizes the Microsoft Office Excel to solve an optimization practical problem and decision-making of machining subcontracting. In general, although considered a frequent problem, is not of easy solution, optimize the mix of production versus outsourcing, because of the restrictions and resources available, it requests investments in specific software. In this way, this research aims to develop software to be called SOSU (Optimization Software for Machining Subcontracting). SOSU should introduce the best mix of internal and subcontracted machining for n types of parts that, over a certain period of time t, maximize capacity and meet all the demand at the lowest cost possible. The methodology adopted follows the bibliographic reference and it is assumed that the necessary data to prove from mathematical modeling of production areas and from a system of costs already structured. The nature of the problem justifies the application of Linear Programming (LP), Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) is used for computational implementation and interface with the user and the supplement Solver to find the solution. The analysis of the experiments show that the SOSU optimizes resources and improves the decision-making process, besides an easy operation, it can be implemented or quickly adapted and without the need of large investments.
