Health care waste (HCW) is the type of waste that results from activities performed in health care services during care provision to humans or animals. Presently, according to RDC 306/04, issued in 2004 by Anvisa, and Resolution no. 358/05, by CONAMA, waste groups have the following classification: Group A (biological waste), Group B (chemical waste), Group C (waste containing radionucleotides), Group D (common waste) and Group E (piercing and cutting waste). In Brazil, 149 tons of wastes are collected every day, and HCW corresponds to approximately 1% to 3 % of that total. An efficient way to adequately manage HCW is through the Health Care Waste Management Plan (HCWMP), and it is possible to reduce the risk posed by certain materials in addition to ensuring disposal in an ecologically correct and economical fashion. According to the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO), the management process enables health care establishments to adequately manage waste. Hence, there is greater control and reduction in the health risks caused by infectious or special waste, in addition to facilitated recycling, treatment, storage, transport and final disposal of solid hospital waste in an environmentally safe fashion. To evaluate the management of HCW of Groups A and D from the Intensive Care Unit of the University Emergency Hospital - FMB - UNESP in the city of Botucatu according to the guidelines presently in force. The waste flow was followed up, and during four random days in the month of September 2011, waste was quantified by estimating daily and monthly values, according to its classification. : In 2011, the University hospital has produced an average of 57,676.8 kg/month of biological and common waste. By adding Groups A and D, during the four days, approximately 209.8 Kg of waste (202.2 Kg of Group A and 7.6 Kg of Group D) were produced in the establishment under study, which... Abusive consumption of alcohol leads to several negative consequences to health and quality of life, as it increases the frequency of diseases that cause death or functional disabilities. The rates of patients admitted to hospital due to physical problems stemming from alcohol abuse are high. This study aimed at identifying patients according to variables age, gender and education level as well as at evaluating the prevalence of CAGE-positive patients and morbidity due to CID-10 (International Classification of Diseases) by the World Health Organization. It is a cross-sectional, observational, exploratory, descriptive and quantitative study. It was conducted at the Botucatu School of Medicine University Hospital (HC) from July to September 2010, at the Internal Medicine ward. This ward aggregates 5 specialties, namely, Cardiology, Hematology, General Medicine, Nephrology and Gastroclinic. Presently, it has 36 beds, of which four are for Intensive Care Therapy (ICT). Three hundred and ten medical charts were analyzed for identification of morbidities and of variables age, gender and schooling. A closed semistructured questionnaire including, among other questions, the CAGE test was applied to each individual. The CAGE test is a questionnaire that comprises four questions and considers that one who answers two or more of such questions affirmatively is a suspected case of alcoholism. The total population studied included 310 patients. Indexes of 60% (186) male and of 40% (124) female patients were found. As regards age range, a population with a higher prevalence of individuals from 51 to 70 years old (41%) was observed. The main education indexes were: incomplete Elementary School: 23.22% (72), complete Elementary School: 21.61% (67), incomplete Secondary School: 18.40% (57) and Illiteracy: 17.74% (55). As regards diseases, a higher proportion was observed for: ...(Complete abstract click electronic access below)

The demand for health services can be understood as an application needs the user has. The inability to use the outpatient services and limited supply of these make it possible for users to browse sites that focus attention on a greater possibility of entry doors, in which first-aid centers and hospital emergency match this profile, distorting the flow of patients in the network through an inverse demand of the movement hierarchy. Added to this, the burden of care in these services results in overcrowding and poor quality of care. Evaluate the demand of the visits occurred in the Emergency Room of the Hospital of the Medical School of Botucatu / UNESP (PS - HC - FMB / UNESP) during June-July 2010. A transversal, descriptive and retrospective. For data collection sheet was used in the proposed Service unit and the data it was filled out the form with the necessary items for the search. Made an exploratory analysis and frequency distributions for categorical variables of the form. Females predominated (56%) and aged 61 years or older with 30%. 96.5% were owned by DRS VI, and 62.5% of Botucatu. The attendance by the physician on duty and corresponded to 57.7% among the 23 medical specialties, Gastric (7.0%), Cardiology (4.5%), Medical (4.4%), urology (4.2%) and Pulmonology (4.1%) were the ones that stood out. The medical procedures performed that stood out were X-ray (46.4%) and electrocardiogram (ECG) (42.3%) and in most specialty care occurred, only the daily consultation with the patient. It was possible to characterize, so the demand for PS - HC - FMB / UNESP for the period June- July 2010, The predominance of the elderly shows that come along with aging diseases and addictions, causing a greater need for health services. Moreover, this study showed that the high number of visits is related to both the daily demands that the tertiary hospital has the same transformation... The Hypertension Arterial Gestationis is a of largest complications to the pregnant women, a time that is associated with to high risk of morbimortalidade fetal and maternal ;the term If referred the levels pressure equal or above of 140mmhg to the pressure systolic and of 90mmhg to the pressure diastolic (1).Hypertension in pregnancy can be classified into gestational hypertension, chronic hypertension, preeclampsia and eclampsia(3). This study aimed to calculate and analyze the cost of care of newborns of hypertensive mothers hospitalized in rooming, nursery and the neonatal intensive care unit (Neonatal UTI). It’s a study of exploratory, descriptive and quantitative data analysis, in newborns of mothers with hypertension, who underwent prenatal care in HCFMB, from January 1 to 31 in December 2010. The data analysis showed that the cost of care for newborn in rooming was R$ 38.62 for the control group and groups of hypertensive mothers were R$ 19.93 to R$ 37.38. The costs of care to the newborn in the nursery were R$ 1,781.81 for the control group and groups of hypertensive mothers were R$ 680.03 to 7544.10. The costs for the newborn who Neonatal UTI were R$ 7,468.60 for the control group and groups of hypertensive mothers were R$ 5,228.02 to R $ 18,372.75. The total costs of care for newborn in rooming, nursery and Neonatal UTI were R$ 916.15 for the control group, R$ 1,385.98 for the HAC group, R$ 327.23 for the group HAS, R$ 3,896.57 for the group of preeclampsia and R$ 6,326.54 for the group of eclampsia. Considerations It can be concluded that the costs of mothers with preeclampsia and eclampsia were higher, being conditions with increased risk of maternal-fetal morbidity / mortality, requiring care in intensive care unit and longer stay in hospital

Health Care Waste (HCW) represents 1%, and it has presently gained a lot of importance. Adequate management is one of the great challenges to be faced by health care centers. It has gained distinction and been widely discussed by members of the sectors involved with sanitation, public health and environmental issues due to waste physical, chemical biological characteristics, which pose potential risk to the environment and public health. The present study aims at evaluating HCW internal management by following all its phases, determining indicators, classifying and quantifying, establishing production rates (kg /patient/day) for the sector and designing materials to disseminate appropriate HCW disposal in the Emergency Room of the UNESP University Hospital in the city of Botucatu according to the guidelines presently in force. : From June to October 2011, the waste flow was observed from its production to final disposal. Four weight measurements were performed on four consecutive days in the month of August by using a properly calibrated (in grams) digital scale at the times scheduled for collection of the produced waste. Hence, the daily and monthly amounts were estimated according to their classification. All the waste packaged in the bags in garbage cans in the Emergency Room for a 24-hour period was considered to be a sample. Separation was not adequately performed in that sector, and waste from Group A was mixed with that from Group D. The amount of infectious waste produced in the sector corresponded to 87.80 %, common waste to 10.93 % and recyclable waste to 1.27%. The mean daily HCW production was of 123.300 kg/day, and the total monthly production was of 3,822 kg/month, which was distributed as follows: Group A 3,355,750 kg/month; Group D 417,570 kg/month and recyclables 48,670 kg/month. The production rate corresponded to 0.47 kg/patient/day, thus showing... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Burns are frequent accidents, and they are among the major causes of morbidity and mortality in our society. In Brazil, statistical data on such lesions are relatively scarce, and they are concentrated in a few treatment centers. Data on such accidents allow for specific care to be timely and properly taken in order to provide patients with a better prognosis, in addition to enabling the development of prevention programs as well as fire-prevention safety laws. To characterize the epidemiological profile of users at the Burn Treatment Unit of Bauru State Hospital. Collection of epidemiological data through the e-pront system and from charts of burned inpatients from April 2005 to April 2010. During the studied period, 906 hospitalizations of burned patients occurred, with an annual average of 181.2 individuals. Their mean age was 28.4 years, with a predominance of males. The mean hospitalization period was of 27.6 days, with a median of 16 days and a maximum of 216 days; 14.7% developed to death, with the highest mortality rate in the first two weeks of hospitalization. Second-degree burns were the most frequent; 36.8% of the patients burned less than 10% of their body surface, and there was a gradual frequency reduction when a larger burned surface was taken into account; the greater the affected areas, the higher the number of deaths; 91% resulted from thermal agents, 6% from electric and 2% from chemical agents; scalding was the major cause among all agents, followed by alcohol associated with fire and direct flame. The major area affected areas were the upper limbs. The study shows the need for educational and preventive measures, particularly for the young adult population, by means of educational programs and prevention campaigns

During the pregnancy process, the maternal organism commonly undergoes changes. Such changes follow the normal course of pregnancy; however, some maternal or fetal factors can interfere with pregnancy and adversely affect its outcomes, thus triggering what is referred to as high-risk pregnancy, which is responsible for increasing maternal, fetal or newborns’ morbimortality rates1,2. One of the obstetric alternatives for a safe resolution of this pregnancy type is the caesarean section. Nevertheless, an expressive increase in the number of caesarean sections has been observed worldwide, and they are, many times, unnecessarily indicated8. The world Health Organization (WHO) recommends that the total number of caesarean sections in relation to the total number of deliveries performed at health service should be a maximum of 15% 11, a limit that is easily surpassed in various services. To outline the epidemiological profile of pregnant women submitted to caesarean sections at a reference health care service in the city of Botucatu-SP. This is a cross-sectional, retrospective, exploratory, descriptive, quantitative study. The target population consisted of one hundred pregnant women assisted in this institution, who had been submitted to caesarean sections in 2010 and were randomly selected to compose the sample. In the analyzed period, there were 1,189 deliveries, of which 601 (50.5%) were natural deliveries, 588 (49.4%) were caesarean sections. As regards maternal age, 76% were in the age range of 19 to 36 years. A high percentage of patients (27%) had not completed elementary education and did not have a paid job; 67% were homemakers. Most of the participants were married (56%); 34% of the women were primiparas, but 19% were in their fourth or more pregnancies. Concerning prenatal care, little was found, since many of them had consultations out of the institution which were not recorded... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Accidents represent a major public health problem as they are frequent, preventable, and account for high morbidity and mortality rates. Children are the most vulnerable to accidents due to their inherent characteristics, and as a result of their physical, sensorial, psychomotor and cognitive limitations, which will only develop with time. Watchfulness and careful attention are of paramount importance, especially as children develop locomotor skills that are accompanied by curiosity about their surroundings. Child accidents, particularly those that could have been avoided, are the accidents most commonly seen in emergency and urgency departments. Urgency and emergency departments are the greatest allies in the attention to pediatric accidents as they offer adequate, immediate and specific high complexity care to patients at risk, viewing their vital stabilization. Investigating the causes and consequences of this insult is essential to establish a diagnosis and to contribute for the adoption of measures of prevention, control, and assistance. To identify the epidemiologic characteristics of the accidents involving children that received care at the pediatric emergency department of Botucatu Medical School Hospital and required hospitalization. This quantitative, retrospective, descriptiveanalytic epidemiologic study included all children aged 0-14 years who had had an accident and were seen at the Pediatric Emergency Department of Botucatu Medical School Hospital of São Paulo State University/UNESP between January 1/2008 and December 31/2009. A total of 227 medical charts were reviewed and 178 (78.4%) patients were included in this study. Of these, 116 (65.1%) were males and 62 (34.8%) were females. Children aged 5 - 9 years (38.9%) were the most affected, followed by those aged 10 - 14 years (37.5%). Fractures occurred in 138 (77.5%) of the cases, followed by foreign bodies... The search for quality of life (QOL) is now an ideal among thousands of people worldwide and is currently the subject has been studied in different areas of knowledge. Thus, one can perceive it in different dimensions, each with its due importance to people's lives. The verification of quality indexes of work life (QWL) may provide information on factors that directly interfere with the satisfaction and personal motivation and collective, with reflections on the structure and excellent service. To this end, we carried out a study to know the characacteristics of quality of life of nursing professionals in a state hospital in São Paulo State, based on short range of quality of life of the World Health Organization (WHOQOL-BREF). This work is a study with a quantitative approach, cross-sectional descriptive and exploratory data analysis using descriptive statistics, involving a sample of 281 nurses who answered the scale for measuring quality of life, composed of four areas: physical, psychological, social relationships and environment. In the study, these areas were related to the professional position, and shift work. There was a satisfactory quality of life in the study population in different areas of WHOQOL-BREF. There was no statistically significant changes in quality of life among the variables. It follows that the population presented data consistent with an adequate quality of life, thus making relevant to addressing the quality of life of nursing in a healthcare organization which has as fundamental to the pursuit of quality through the accreditation process second hospital established by the National Accreditation Organization (ONA) that aims at establishing and implementing a process of improving health care, thereby stimulating the services to achieve higher standards of quality
