Incomplete glimpses of the philosophy of Charles Peirce (1839-1914) can frequently be found in studies about Semiotics and Information Science. Therefore, we sought to discover the theoretical and applied interrelationships between knowledge and information organization and Peirce's Semiotics and Philosophy. The aim was to discover and evaluate the contributions of Peirce's Semiotics and Philosophy to the knowledge and information organization field. The method of this study was bibliographical research. The main results were: indexing process semiotic model, semiotic knowledge organization, interaction between documentary semiotics and documentary languages, kinds of inference to the indexing process, as well as the collaboration of Peirce's pragmatism to terminology theory. Finally, we listed issues for future research.

Eletroestimulação em pacientes portadores de doença pulmonar obstrutiva crônica

Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease may have muscle dysfunction, which ultimately reduce the functional capacity. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is a technique that can be effective in these patients, and implies low overload to the cardiorespiratory system. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of NMES on muscle strength and cardiorespiratory fitness in COPD patients. Five patients (2 men, 3 women) were evaluated, with a mean age of 70.40 ± 6.61 years, and underwent anamnesis, anthropometric measurements, spirometry, pulmonary function, cardiopulmonary functional capacity and muscle strength in the lower limbs. After the evaluations, the patients were enrolled in a program of electrical stimulation of the quadriceps muscles, performed 3 times per week for 5 weeks. Each session lasted for 30 minutes, being reassessed at the end of the 15 sessions. Statistically significant response is observed to gain strength in lower limb (p = 0.005), but no significant responses were observed for the distance in six minute walking test before and after the test protocol for electrical stimulation. Showing that with NMES was located just gain muscle strength without effects on functional capacity, and there are few studies that investigate these effects, so further studies are needed to investigate this relationship.

A alfabetização sob o olhar da Teoria Histórico Cultural: sobre a necessidade e a atividade de estudo

Studies on activity and learning in the cultural-historical approach involves, most cases, the discussions on the higher psychological functions and areas of proximal and real development. Having said that our objective in this paper is to make a discussion about the activity of study and the concepts that involve the teaching of the mother language from the Historic-Cultural theory. We point this way, the importance of this approach in studies on literacy and knowledge of the activity of study as central to the creation of humanizing need of reading and writing, starting from the principle that the creation of needs requires the production of discourses, which have their materiality in the text.

O campo e a cidade em Presidente Prudente: uma contribuição aos estudos de clima urbano

O processo de urbanização é bastante expressivo na modificação do clima na escala local, pois as formas materiais assumidas pela cidade, bem como as atividades que nela se desenvolvem, provocam anomalias nos elementos do clima como a temperatura, umidade relativa do ar, direção e velocidade do vento. Destes, a temperatura tem se destacado nos estudos sobre o clima urbano, pois as características da área urbana promovem seu aumento tanto no ar quanto nos alvos da superfície. Nesse sentido, este estudo objetivou detectar as anomalias térmicas intraurbanas e suas magnitudes, relacionando-as com os tipos de uso e ocupação da superfície do solo no município de Presidente Prudente-SP. Para tanto, foram realizadas análises das diferenças térmicas e higrométricas entre o urbano e o rural em dias representativos do inverno e do verão, e a verificação da temperatura da superfície através do sensoriamento remoto no infravermelho termal. Os resultados apresentaram que os tipos de tempo, assim como as características da superfície foram responsáveis pelas maiores ou menores diferenças entre a área urbana e a rural, o que demonstra a importância de se adequar o planejamento urbano às características do ambiente local

Eles e Elas: comparação intersexual na categorização social e formação das primeiras impressões em seres humanos

O objetivo da presente pesquisa foi compreender, sob uma perspectiva evolucionista, os mecanismos, preferências e as diferenças sexuais subjacentes a uma análise as primeiras impressões em seres humanos. Investigamos: (1) ocorrências de diferenças sexuais na categorização social e na formação das primeiras impressões; (2) a influência do sexo e da cor de pele e (3) ocorrência de preconceitos (com relação ao sexo e/ou a cor de pele do sujeito estímulo) e suas influências na formação das primeiras impressões. Para isso, tratamos de expor uma amostra de 43 indivíduos ( 17 a 34 anos) à oito vídeos (4 perfis: homens negros e brancos, mulheres brancas e negras) com duração de 20’’ cada. Durante o procedimento experimental foi requerido que o participante respondesse a um questionário (escala likert; 0-6). Nesse, o participante avaliava a atratividade física, a competência, sucesso na carreira, agressividade, confiabilidade, atribuía uma nota para a cor da pele, e qualidade geral. Foi feito um teste GLM com medidas repetidas e post hoc teste t student pareado, a fim fazer uma análise mais detalhada das diferenças encontradas nas avaliações. Nossos resultados apontam que a característica que afeta mais a avaliação tanto de homens como das mulheres é a atratividade física, o que foi possível concluir que as outras características em análise é menos dependente da primeira impressão e construída ao longo do convívio. As mulheres tendem a fazer uma avaliação mais minuciosa, o que corrobora outros estudos sobre diferenças sexuais. Devido ao pequeno N, não possível analisarmos a influência da cor da pele do sujeito estímulo na avaliação, evidenciando a necessidade de ampliação futura desse projeto. O Leão do Norte vai voltar a rugir?: um estudo de caso sobre as mudanças na Administração do Comercial Futebol Clube da cidade de Ribeirão Preto - SP

From the informations collected on the Commercial Football Club, the city of Ribeirao Preto, there was a case study in order to identify and describe the management model adopted by the club, to overcome the financial and administrative crisis. It was used as reference to analyze the concepts of social capital and historic capital, considered decisive for the choice of the management model adopted. In addition, we also used the proposals contained in sports management studies to identify the business model chosen by the Commercial Club Football Club. In the final considerations argued that the adopted model already includes some results, as the club qualified to participate the Series A-1 League football Paulista, one of the targets set by the new management of the club

A presença das mulheres nas ciências exatas

Most well-known and studied names in schoolbooks are men's. It gives one the idea that the world of numbers does not belong to female individuals. In order to verify that this thought is a misconception, a research is carried out about women who, despite all prejudice, have faced many adversities, leaving us many contributions on exact sciences and being relevant until the present date. Nowadays, there is not as much sexual discrimination. Women’s under-representation in exact sciences is due to other motives, such as issues of choice and the option of part-time jobs for professional/familiar balance. Maybe because of this, women have little acknowledgment, as it can be seen in Nobel Prize, where of its 851 awards, only 44 were for women. They are present at different degrees of education, such as licentiate graduation, bachelor’s or master’s, but still outnumbered.
