The isotherms of adsorption of CuX2 (X=Cl-, Br-, ClO4-) by silica gel chemically modified with 2-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole were studied in acetone and ethanol solutions: at 298 K. The following equilibria constants (in 1 mol(-1)) were determined: (a) CuCl2: 3.5 x 10(3) (ac), 2.0 x 10(3) (eth); (b) CuBr2: 2.8 x 10(3) (ac), 2.0 x 10(3) (eth); (c) Cu(ClO4)(2): 1.8 x 10(3) (ac), 1.0 x 10(3) (eth); ac = acetone, eth = ethanol. The electron spin resonance spectra of the surface complexes indicated a tetragonal distorted structure in the case of lower degrees of metal loading on the chemically modified surface. The d-d electronic transition spectra showed that for the ClO4-, complex, the peak of absorption did not change for any degree of metal loading, and for Cl- and Br- complexes, the peak maxima shifted to a higher energy region with a lower metal loading. The isotherms of adsorption of CuX2 (XCl-, Br-, ClO4-) by silica gel chemically modified with 5-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole-2-thiol were studied in acetone and ethanol solutions, at 25 degrees C. The following equilibria constants (in L mol(-1)) were determined: (a) CuCl2, 3.2 x 10(3) (ac), 2.5 x 10(3) (eth); (b) CuBr2, 2.9 x 10(3) (ac), 2.3 x 10(3) (eth); (c) Cu(ClO4)(2), 1.8 x 10(3) (ac), 1.2 x 10(3) (eth); ac, acetone; eth, ethanol. The electron spin resonance spectra of the surface complexes indicated a tetragonal-distorted structure in the case of lower degrees of metal loading on the chemically modified surface. The d-d electronic transition spectra showed that for the ClO4- complex, the peak of absorption did not change for any degree of metal loading and for Cl- and Br- complexes, the peak maxima shifted to higher energy with lower metal loadings. The isotherms of adsorption of CuX2 (X = Cl-, Br, ClO4-,) by silica gel chemically modified with thiazolidine-2-thione were studied in acetone (ac) and ethanol (eth) solutions at 25 degrees C. The following equilibrium constants (in 1 mol(-1)) were determined: a) CuCl2, 1.9 x 10(3) (ac), 1.6 x 10(3) (eth); b) CuBr2, 1.7 x 10(3) (ac), 1.2 x 10(3) (eth); c) Cu(ClO4)(2), 1.1 x 10(3) (ac), 1.0 x 10(3) (eth). The electron spin resonance spectra of the surface complexes indicate a tetragonal distorted structure in the case of lower degrees of metal loading on the chemically modified surface. The d-d electronic transition spectra show that for the ClO4- complex, the peak of absorption did not change for any degree of metal loading, and for Cl- and Br complexes, the peak maxima shift to higher energy with lower metal loading.

The isotherms of adsorption of MX2 (M = Cu2+, Co2+; X = Cl-, Br-, ClO4) by silica gel chemically modified with 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (SiATR) were studied in acetone and ethanol solutions, at 25 degrees C. The 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole molecule, covalently bound to the silica gel surface, adsorbs MX2 from solvent by forming a surface complex. At low loading, the electronic and electron spin resonance spectral parameters indicated that the Cu2+ complexes have distorted tetragonal symmetry. The CoX2 (X = Cl-, Br-) analogues exhibit a distorted-tetrahedral geometry, whilstthe (SiATR)mCo)ClO4)(2) complex has a tetragonally distorted octahedral geometry, with four equatorial nitrogen atoms around the cobalt. The material octakis[3-(3-amino- 1,2,4-triazole)propyl]octasilsesquioxane (ATZ-SSQ) was synthesized and its potential was assessed for Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Zn(II) and Fe(III) from their ethanol solutions and compared with related 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole-propyl modified silica gel (ATZ-SG). The adsorption was performed using a batchwise process and both organofunctionalized surfaces showed the ability to adsorb the metal ions from ethanol solution. The Langmuir model allowed to describe the sorption of the metal ions on ATZ-SSQ and ATTZ-SG in a satisfactory way. The equilibrium is reached very quickly Q min) for ATZ-SSQ, indicating that the adsorption sites are well exposed. The maximum metal ion uptake values for Cu(II), Co(II), Zn(II), Ni(II) and Fe(III) were 0.86, 0.09, 0.19, 0.09 and 0.10 mmol g(-1), respectively, for the ATZ-SSQ, which were higher than the corresponding values 0.21, 0.04, 0.14, 0.05 and 0.07 mmol g(-1) achieved with the ATZ-SG. In order to obtain more information on the metal-ligand interaction of the complexes on the surface of the ATZ-SSQ, Cu(II) was used as a probe to determine the arrangements of the ligands around the central metal ion by electron spin resonance (ESR). The ATZ-SSQ was used for the separation and determination (in flow using a column technique) of the metal ions present in commercial ethanol. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A series of V2O5/TiO2 samples was synthesized by sol-gel and impregnation methods with different contents of vanadia. These samples were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR). XRD detected rutile as the predominant phase for pure TiO2 prepared by the sol-gel method. The structure changed to anatase when the vanadia loading was increased. Also, anatase was the predominant phase for samples obtained by the impregnation method. Raman measurements identified two species of surface vanadium: monomeric vanadyl (V4+) and polymeric vanadates (V5+). XPS results indicated that Ti ions were in octahedral position surrounded by oxygen ions. The V/Ti atomic ratios showed that V ions were highly dispersed on the vanadia/titania surface obtained by the sol-gel method. EPR analysis detected three V4+ ion types: two of them were located in axially symmetric sites substituting for Ti4+ ions in the rutile structure, and the third one was characterized by magnetically interacting V4+ ions in the form of pairs or clusters. A partial oxidation of V4+ to V5+ was evident from EPR analysis for materials with higher concentrations of vanadium. (C) 2001 American Vacuum Society.

The occurrence of subfossil material in bottom sediments of Couve Island, Ubatuba region, São Paulo State, is confirmed. The analyzed material consists of a bivalve shell that was dated by the electron spin resonance technique. By the additive irradiation method an archaeological absorbed dose of (25 +/- 5) Gy was obtained and calibration with other dating works in the same area allows the inference of an age of (25 +/- 5) x 10(2) years. The importance of this finding and its paleoecological implications could contribute to elucidating the nature of short-term environmental changes in the Brazilian coastline during the Holocene, as well as becoming an important tool to the understanding of the distribution and biological aspects of the bivalve fauna. Dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB) dispersions obtained by simply mixing the amphiphile in water, and by bath-sonication, were investigated by electron spin resonance (ESR) of stearic acids and their methyl ester derivatives, labeled at the 5th and 16th carbons of the acyl chain. The ESR spectra indicate that the non-sonicated dispersions are formed mainly by one population of DODAB vesicles, either in the gel (T < T-m) or in the liquid-crystalline (T > T-m) state. Around T-m there is a co-existence of the two phases, with a thermal hysteresis of about 3.2 degreesC. In sonicated DODAB dispersions, spin labels indicate two different environments even for temperatures far below T-m: one similar to that obtained with non-sonicated samples, a gel phase, and another one in the liquid-crystalline state. The fluid phase domain present below T-m could correspond to either the periphery of bilayer fragments, reported to be present in sonicated DODAB dispersions, or to high curvature vesicles. Amorphous and crystalline thin films of Mn-doped(0.5%-10%) GaAs and crystalline thin films of Zn1-xCoxO(x = 3%-20%) were investigated by means of magnetic susceptibility and electron spin resonance (ESR). For the Mn-doped GaAs samples, our results show the absence of ferromagnetic ordering for the amorphous films in the 300 > T > 2 K temperature range, in contrast to the ferromagnetism found in crystalline films for T-C < 110 K. A single ESR line with a temperature independent g-value (g similar to 2) is observed for the amorphous films, and the behavior of this ESR linewidth depends on the level of crystallinity of the film. For the Mn-doped GaAs crystalline films, only a ferromagnetic mode is observed for T < TC when the film is ferromagnetic. Turning now the Zn1-xCoxO films, ferromagnetic loops were observed at room temperature for these films. The magnetization data show an increasing of the saturation magnetization M. as a function of x reaching a maximum value for x approximate to 10%. ESR experiments at T = 300 K in the same films show a strong anisotropic ferromagnetic mode (FMR) for x = 0.10.

Electron spin resonance of Eu(2+) (4f(7), S=7/2) in a La hexaboride (LaB(6)) single crystal shows a single anisotropic Dysonian resonance. From the observed negative g shift of the resonance, it is inferred that the Eu(2+) ions are covalent exchange coupled to the B 2p-like host conduction electrons. From the anisotropy of the spectra (linewidth and field for resonance), we found that the S ground state of Eu(2+) ions experience a cubic crystal field of a negative fourth order crystal field parameter (CFP), b(4)=-11.5(2.0) Oe, in agreement with the negative fourth order CFP, A(4), found for the non-S ground state R hexaborides. These results support covalency as the dominant contribution to the fourth order CFP for the whole R hexaboride family.

The electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of Eu2+ (4f(7), S = 7/2) in LaB6 single crystal show a single Dysonian resonance for the localized Eu2+ magnetic moments. It is shown that the Eu2+ ions are covalent exchange coupled to the (B) 2p-like host conduction electrons. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The behaviour of nitrobenzenesulfonamide anion radicals generated from the electrochemical reduction of aliphatic and aromatic amines protected by nitrobenzenesulfonyl (nosyl) groups in N,N-' dimethylformamide has been reported. The species have been characterized by voltammetry and optical and electron spin resonance spectroscopies. The visible spectra of the anion radicals were recorded and the hyperfine splitting constants were assigned to specific proton positions and nitrogen nuclei of the molecule. The stabilities of the anion radicals are affected by electronic properties of the protecting group and specific features of the amines, which show direct influence on the route of cathodic cleavage of the nitrobenzenesulfonamides.

Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) data in pressed pellets of doped poly(3-methylthiophene) (P3MT) show a single ESR line that changes into a broad and a narrow superimposed lines below 225K. D.C. susceptibility measurements using a SQUID susceptometer didn't reveal any special feature at this temperature. Assuming crystallization of the polymer, we attribute the broad line to the crystalline fraction of the polymer and the narrow line to the amorphous one.

Electron-spin-resonance and dc conductivity data show a thermal-history-dependent transition at 240 K in pressed pellets of ClO4--doped poly(3-methylthiophene) (P3MT). We discuss the possibility of this transition to be a Peierls transition from a room-temperature-metallic to a charge-density-wave state driven by anions ordering at this temperature. Below 100 K, dc conductivity shows a change from linear to exponential decay. Nonlinear conductivity has also been observed in this system for very low electric fields.
