Objective: The purpose of this study was to perform histological and histometric analyses of the repair process of autogenous bone grafts fixed at rat calvaria with ethyl-cyanoacrylate adhesive. Material and Methods: Thirty-two rats were divided into two groups (n=16), Group I - Control and Group II - Adhesive. Osteotomies were made at the right parietal bone for graft obtainment using a 4-mm-diameter trephine drill. Then, the bone segments were fixed with the adhesive in the parietal region of the opposite side to the donor site. After 10 and 30 days, 8 animals of each group were euthanized and the calvarias were laboratorially processed for obtaining hematoxylin and eosin-stained slides for histological and histometric analyses. Results: An intense inflammatory reaction was observed at the 10-day period. At 30 days, this reaction was less intense, despite the presence of adhesive at the recipient-site/graft interface. Graft incorporation to the recipient site was observed only at the control group, which maintained the highest graft size at 10 and 30 days. Conclusions: Although the fragment was stable, the presence of adhesive in Group II did not allow graft incorporation to the recipient site, determining a localized, discrete and persistent inflammatory reaction.

Paclobutrazol applied to the soil is used for the production management of mangoes in most of the orchards, but it presents as disadvantage the greater persistence in plant and soil. Three growth regulators (prohexadione-Ca, trinexapac-ethyl and chlormequat chloride) were foliar applied, at two dosages and compared to paclobutrazol applied as soil-drench. The experiment was conducted in the region of the Sao Francisco Valley, Petrolina, PE, from December 2007 to July 2008, in a mango orchard that has a spacing of 8 m between lines and 5 m between plants. In order to compare the effects of the treatment, data were evaluated regarding to vegetative growth (number, length and leaf number of vegetative branches) and flowering (percentage and panicles length). The combination of PBZ, soil applied with ProCa, foliar applied was the most efficient in controlling vegetative growth of branches of the mango 'Kent', but not regarding to flowering, where there were no differences between treatments.

The effects of castration on alpha(1)-adrenoceptors in rat vas deferens were investigated by determining the actions of selective antagonists against the contractions induced by noradrenaline. The results obtained in vas deferens from control rats suggest participation of alpha(1A)-adrenoceptors as judged by the pA(2) values for prazosin (9.6), benoxathian (9.5), 2(2,6-dimethoxyphenoxyethyl) amino-methyl-1,4-benzodioxone hydrochloride) (WB 4101) (9.6), phentolamine (8.4), 8-[2-[4-(2-methoxyphenyl)-1-piperazinyl]ethyl]-8-azaspiro[4.5] decane-7,9-dionedihydrochloride (BMY 7378) (6.7) and by the insensitivity to chloroethylclonidine (100 mu M, 45 min). In vas deferens from castrated rats, WE 4101 and spiperone showed slopes lower than 1.0 in the Schild plots, suggesting participation of multiple receptors. In these organs, noradrenaline contractions were partially inhibited by chloroethylclonidine (100 mu M, 45 min), indicating participation of alpha(1B)-adrenoceptors. After chloroethylclonidine treatment, WE 4101 showed a slope not different from 1.0 in the Schild plot, resulting in a pA(2) of 9.4, which indicates an interaction with alpha(1A)-adrenoceptors. It is suggested that castration modifies the functional alpha(1)-adrenoceptors subtypes in rat vas deferens. (C) 1998 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The contractions of the rat vas deferens in response to noradrenaline are mediated through alpha(1A)-adrenoceptors. We observed participation of alpha(1B)-adrenoceptors in these contractions after castration. We now investigated the time course of this plasticity and the effects of testosterone by determining the actions of competitive antagonists on noradrenaline-induced contractions after 7, 14, 21 and 30 days of castration. BMY 7378 (8-[2-[4-(2-methoxyphenyl)-1-piperazinyl]ethyl]-8-azaspiro[4.5]decane-7,9-dione dihydrochloride) antagonised noradrenaline-induced contractions in control and castrated rats with low pA(2) values (congruent to 6.8). In control vas deferens, WB 4101 (2-(2,6-dimethoxyphenoxyethyl)aminomethyl-1,4-benzodioxane hydrochloride) had a slope in the Schild plot no different from 1.0, while slopes lower than 1.0 ( approximate to 0.6) were observed for vas deferens from castrated rats. Chloroethylclonidine was ineffective in the control vas while it inhibited noradrenaline-induced contractions in vasa from castrated rats and converted the complex antagonism by WB 4101 into simple competitive antagonism. Treatment of castrated rats with testosterone prevented the effects of castration. The results suggest that alpha(1B)-adrenoceptors are detectable in vas deferens from at least the 7th through the 30th day after castration and that testosterone prevents this plasticity. The methanolic extract of the leaves of the medicinal plant Byrsonima crassa (Malpighiaceae) contain flavonoids with antioxidant activity. They were separated in a preparative scale using high-speed counter-current chromatography. The optimum solvent system used was composed of a mixture of ethyl acetate-n-propanol-water (140:8:80 (v/v/v)) and led to a successful separation between monoglucosilated flavonoids (quercetin-3-O-alpha-L-arabinoside, quercetin-3-O-beta-D-galactoside) and the biflavonoid amentoflavone in only 3.5 h. The purities of quercetin-3-O-alpha-L-arabinoside (95 mg), quercetin-3-O-beta-D-galactoside (16 mg) and the biflavonoid amentoflavone (114 mg) were all isolated at purity over 95%. Identification was performed by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and UV analyses. (C) 2004 Published by Elsevier B.V.
