This study evaluated the effect of ultrasonic vibration on the tensile strength required to remove intraradicular post cemented with different materials. Bovine teeth were selected, and 7 mm of the cervical root canals were prepared to size 5 Largo drill, the posts were cemented with zinc phosphate, Enforce (resin) or Rely X (glass ionomer). The specimens were divided into six groups (n = 10), according to the following procedures: GI-cementation with zinc phosphate associated with traction force; GII-cementation with zinc phosphate associated with ultrasonic activation and traction force; G111-cementation with Enforce associated with traction force; GIV-cementation with Enforce associated with ultrasonic activation and traction force; GV-cementation with Rely X associated with traction force; and GVI-cementation with Rely X associated with ultrasonic activation and traction force. The tensile test was conducted using the electromechanical testing machine, the force was determined by a specialized computer program and ultrasonic activation using the Jet Sonic Four Plus (Gnatus) device in 10P. Concerning to average ranking, GI showed statistically significant difference in comparison with GII and GVI (p < 0.05); there was no statistical difference in GIII and GIV when compared to other groups (p > 0.05). The ultrasound favored the intraradicular post traction regardless of the employed cement in greater or lesser extent. The post removal is a routine practice in the dental office, therefore, new solutions and better alternatives are need to the practitioner. We did not find in the literature many articles referring to this practice. Thus, the results from this study are relevant in the case planning and to promote more treatment options.

The antimicrobial activity is a fundamental property of root-canal sealers due to persistence of residual microorganisms in the root canal system, even after the chemo-mechanical preparation and using of intracanal dressing. The aim of this study is to review the literature about the antimicrobial properties of some of the main root-canal sealers. Although there is controversy regarding this property, probably due to differences in the methodologies used in the studies, it was concluded that the sealers with the best antimicrobial activity were (in ascending order): Endofill, Ketac Endo, Sealapex, AH Plus, Endo CPM Sealer, Sealer 26 and Epiphany. Activ GP still needs scientific research to evaluate this property.

Purpose: This study evaluated the efficacy of the union between two new self-etching self-adhesive resin cements and enamel using the microtensile bond strength test.Materials and Methods: Buccal enamel of 80 bovine teeth was submitted to finishing and polishing with metallographic paper to a refinement of #600, in order to obtain a 5-mm(2) flat area. Blocks (2 x 4 x 4 mm) of laboratory composite resin were cemented to enamel according to different protocols: (1) untreated enamel + RelyX Unicem cement (RX group); (2) untreated enamel + Bifix SE cement (BF group); (3) enamel acid etching and application of resin adhesive Single Bond + RelyX Unicem (RXA group); (4) enamel acid etching and application of resin adhesive Solobond M + Bifix SE (BFA group). After 7 days of storage in distillated water at 37 degrees C, the blocks were sectioned for obtaining microbar specimens with an adhesive area of 1 mm(2) (n = 120). Specimens were submitted to the microtensile bond strength test at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. The results (in MPa) were analyzed statistically by ANOVA and Tu key's test. Results: Enamel pre-treatment with phosphoric acid and resin adhesive (27.9 and 30.3 for RXA and BFA groups) significantly improved (p <= 0.05) the adhesion of both cements to enamel compared to the union achieved with as-polished enamel (9.9 and 6.0 for RX and BF).Conclusion: Enamel pre-treatment with acid etching and the application of resin adhesive significantly improved the bond efficacy of both luting agents compared to the union achieved with as-polished enamel.

This study evaluated the Knoop hardness of one resin cement (dual-cure mode or light-cure mode) when illuminated directly or through restorative materials-ceramic (HeraCeram) or composite (Artglass)-by two light curing units. Light curing was carried out using a conventional quartz tungsten halogen (QTH) light source (XL2500) for 40 s, and a light emitting diodes (LED) light source (Ultrablue Is) for 40 s. Bovine incisors had their buccal faces flattened and hybridised. on these surfaces, a mould was seated and filled with cement. A disc of the veneering material (1.5 mm thickness) was positioned over this set for light curing. After storage (24 h/37 degrees C), samples (n = 10) were sectioned for hardness (KHN) measurements. Data were submitted to ANOVA and to Tukey's test (alpha = 0.05). In general, light curing with LED resulted in higher hardness values than QTH. Distinct cement behaviour was observed with different veneering material in association with different light curing units (LCUs). (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This study evaluated the exposure time of light-curing of the polymers used for cementation on microhardness test in different storage times. The polymers (specifically called resin cements) were RelyX ARC, RelyX U100, and SET. Five specimens of each group were prepared and photo-polymerized with exposure times of 20 s and 180 s, using a LED polymerization unit with wavelength of 440 ~ 480 nm and light output was consistently 1,500 mW/cm2. The Vickers hardness test was performed in a MMT-3 Microhardness Tester. Data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). The values of RelyX ARC showed statistically significant difference to groups with light exposure when considering only chemical cure (p < 0.05). The groups with light exposure (20 s and 180 s) showed no significant difference between them (p > 0.05). The RelyX U100 cured only chemically showed statistically significant difference between 48 h and 7 days (p < 0.05). The SET resin cement showed no significant difference to groups without light exposure for all storage times (p > 0.05). The values of hardening of the dual-cured resin cements improved after setting by light and chemical activation demonstrating the importance of light curing. © 2011 by the authors.

The cementation procedure of metal-free fixed partial dentures exhibits special characteristics about the porcelains and cementation agents, which turns the correct association between these materials necessary. Our purpose in this literature review was to point the main groups of cements associated to metal-free restoration and discuss about the advantages, disadvantages, and recommendations of each one. Our search was confined to the electronic databases PubMed and SciELO and to books about this matter. There are essentially 3 types of hard cement: conventional, resin, or a hybrid of the two. The metal-free restorations can be fixed with conventional or resin cements. The right choice of luting material is of vital importance to the longevity of dental restorative materials. Conventional cements are advantageous when good compressive straight, good film thickness, and water dissolution resistance are necessary. However, they need an ideal preparation, and they are not acid dissolution resistant. Conventional cements are indicated to porcelains that cannot be acid etched. Resin cements represent the choice to metal-free restoration cementation because they present better physical properties and aesthetic than conventional agents.

Objectives. To evaluate the effects of current resin-modified glass-ionomer cements (RMGICs) applied on culture of cells or implanted into subcutaneous tissue of rats.Methods. Experiment 1 - Thirty round-shaped samples of every RMGICs: Rely X Luting Cement (RL), Vitremer (VM), and Vitrebond (VB) were placed into wells with 1.1 mL of culture medium (DMEM), and incubated for 24,48 or 72 h. The extracts from every sample were applied on the MDPC-23 cells. Fresh DMEM was used as control group. The MTT assay was carried out for mitochondrial respiration. Experiment 2 - Fifty-four polyethylene tubes filled with the experimental materials were implanted into the dorsal subcutaneous tissue of rats. At 7, 30, and 90 days the animals were killed and the biopsies were processed for histological evaluation.Results. Experiment 1 - Both time of elution and material significantly influenced cell respiratory activity. in general, the extracts obtained at 24 h were less cytotoxic than 48 and 72 h incubation. The cytotoxic effect of VM and RL were not statistically different (P < 0.05) for the 24-hour period. VB showed the highest cytotoxic effect. Experiment 2 - All RMGICs elicited at 7 days a moderate to intense inflammatory reaction which decreased over time. However, connective healing occurred for most of samples at 90-day evaluation.Significance. Glass-ionomer cements may cause noticeable inflammatory response when in direct contact to connective tissue. The toxic effects of this kind of soluble material depend on the amount of components released in the aqueous environment. (C) 2005 Academy of Dental Materials. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Objective. The aim of this study was to evaluate the pulp response following cementation of inlays using two different resin cements.Methods. Deep Class V cavities were prepared on the buccal surface of 34 sound human premolars. impressions were taken and inlays were prepared which were cemented with the following luting materials-Group 1: Rely X(TM) Unicem. (3M ESPE); Group 2: Variolink(R) II (Ivoclar Vivadent). in Group 3 (control), after lining the cavity floor with Dycal(R) (Dentsply Caulk) the inlays were cemented with Rely X(TM) Unicem. Four additional teeth were used as an intact control group. For Variolink(R) II, the adhesive system Excite was used as part of the cementation procedure. After 7 or 60 days, the teeth were extracted and processed for histological assessment.Results. At 7 days, Rely X(TM) Unicern and Variolink(R) II system triggered in two samples a mild and moderate inflammatory response, respectively. At 60 days, the pulpal response decreased for both groups. A discrete persistent inflammatory response occurred in Group 2 in which displacement of resin components across the dentin tubules was observed. In the control group, normal histological characteristics were observed. The inflammatory response and tissue disorganization were related to the remaining dentin thickness between the cavity floor and the pulp tissue.Significance. Techniques for inlay cementation using distinct luting cements may cause specific pulpal damage. Variolink(R) II associated with the adhesive system Excite cause more aggressive effects to the pulp-dentin complex than Rely X(TM) Unicern cement when both are used to cement inlay restorations.
