TiO2/SnO2 thin films heterostructures were grown by the sol-gel dip-coating technique. It was found that the crystalline structure of TiO2 depends on the annealing temperature and the substrate type. TiO2 films deposited on glass substrate, submitted to thermal annealing until 550 degrees C, present anatase structure, whereas films deposited on quartz substrate transform to rutile structure when thermally annealed at 1100 degrees C. When structured as rutile, this oxide semiconductor has very close lattice parameters to those of SnO2, making easier the heterostructure assembling. The electrical properties of TiO2/SnO2 heterostructure were evaluated as function of temperature and excitation with different light sources. The temperature dependence of conductivity is dominated by a deep level with energy coincident with the second ionization level of oxygen vacancies in SnO2, suggesting the dominant role of the most external layer material (SnO2) to the electrical transport properties. The fourth harmonic of a Nd:YAG laser line (4.65 eV) seems to excite the most external layer whereas a InGaN LED (2.75 eV) seems to excite electrons from the ground state of a quantized interfacial channel as well as intrabandgap states of the TiO2 layer.

Frequency upconversion (UC) processes involving energy transfer (ET) among Nd 3+ and Pr 3+ ions in a fluoroindate glass are reported. In a first experiment, the excitation of Pr 3+ [transition 3H 4→ 1D 2] and of Nd 3+ [transition 4I 9/2→( 2G 7/2+ 4G 5/2)] was achieved with a dye laser operating in the 575-590 nm range. In a second experiment, the Nd 3+ ions were excited with the second harmonic of a Nd: YAG laser at 532 nm. The ET processes leading to UC in both experiments were studied by monitoring the blue fluorescence decay at 480 nm due to the transition 3P 0→ 3H 4 in Pr 3+. In the more relevant UC process, quartets of ions (Nd-Nd-Pr-Pr) are excited due to absorption of three laser photons by two Nd 3+ ions which transfer their energy to two Pr 3+ ions. Each Pr 3+ ion promoted to the 3P 0 level decays to the ground state emitting one photon in the blue region. This conclusion was achieved investigating the dependence of the UC fluorescence intensity as a function of laser intensity, samples concentrations, and temporal behavior of the UC signal. Other UC processes involving nonisoionic groups of three ions are also reported. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

The aim of this study was to conduct an in vitro evaluation, by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), of the adhesion of blood components on root surfaces irradiated with Er,Cr:YSGG (2.78 mu m) or Er:YAG (2.94 mu m) laser, and of the irradiation effects on root surface morphology. Sixty samples of human teeth were previously scaled with manual instruments and divided into three groups of 20 samples each: G1 (control group) - no treatment; G2 - Er,Cr:YSGG laser irradiation; G3 - Er:YAG laser irradiation. After performing these treatments, blood tissue was applied to 10 samples of each group, whereas 10 samples received no blood tissue application. After performing the laboratory treatments, the samples were observed under SEM, and the resulting photomicrographs were classified according to a blood component adhesion scoring system and root morphology. The results were analyzed statistically (Kruskall-Wallis and Mann Whitney tests, alpha = 5%). The root surfaces irradiated with Er:YAG and Er,Cr:YSGG lasers presented greater roughness than those in the control group. Regarding blood component adhesion, the results showed a lower degree of adhesion in G2 than in G1 and G3 (G1 x G2: p = 0.002; G3 x G2: p = 0.017). The Er:YAG and Er,Cr:YSGG laser treatments caused more extensive root surface changes. The Er:YAG laser treatment promoted a greater degree of blood component adhesion to root surfaces, compared to the Er,Cr:YSGG treatment.

The laser has been widely used in many specialties of dentistry and several wavelengths have been investigated as a substitute for high-speed handpiece. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature about the use of Er:YAG and Er,Cr:YSGG lasers in cavity preparation for dental tissues. Despite the differences in wavelength, pulse duration and energy, the morphological characteristics of the irradiated dentin surface with these lasers are comparable, as well as its effects as methods of dental caries prevention. Thus, Er:YAG and Er,Cr:YSGG lasers prepared cavities with similar effects on the dental tissue, however, further investigations about ideal irradiation conditions are needed for both lasers.

Reaction of LaX3(THF)(n) (X = Cl, 1) with two equiv. of K(Tp(Me2)) gave good yields of the bis-Tp complexes [La(Tp(Me2))(2)X] (X = Cl (1); I (3)). However, the formation of 1 and 3 is always accompanied by significant amounts of La(Tp(Me2))(2)(kappa(2)-pz(Me2)) ([pz(Me2)](-) = 3,5-dimethyl-pyrazolato) (2). The pyrazolato complex 2, which presumably arises from decomposition of the [Tp(Me2)](-) moiety during salt metathesis, was independently prepared in good yield from 1 and in situ generated [pz(Me2)](-). The solid-state structures of 1 and 2 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Subsequent reactions of halogeno-Tp(Me2) complexes 1 and 3 with various alkali metal salts MR (M = Li, R = CH2SiMe3, Ph, N(SiMe3)(2); M = K, R = OAr) gave M(Tp(Me2)) as the major product. Alternatively, the mono-Tp bis(aryloxide) derivatives [Ln(Tp(Me2))(OC6H2-2,6-'Bu-4-Me)(2)] (Ln = La (4); Nd (5)) were obtained in high yields by salt metathesis of [Ln(OC6H2-2,6-'Bu-4-Me)(3)] with one equiv. of K(Tp(Me2)). Yttrium-aluminum oxides are interesting compounds and they have been extensively used as host for lasers and phosphors, due to their stable physical and chemical properties. The fabrication of yttrium-aluminum garnet (YAG) has been investigated thoroughly. Single-crystal YAG is expensive and to produce it a new way has been investigated. This process consists of modifying the methodology of reagents mixture and the process of heating them. The microwave irradiation is used to heat-treat the oxide mixture. The traditional synthesis of YAG powders occurs through the reaction of aluminum and yttrium powders at high temperatures. With this work we investigated the preparation of YAG by non-hydrolytic sol-gel route as an alternative methodology to obtain yttrium-aluminum matrix from inorganic precursors (yttrium and aluminum chloride). The preparation of the gel was carried out in an oven-dried glassware. The AlCl3, YCl3 and ethanol were reacted in reflux under argon atmosphere. Europium III chloride was added as a structural probe. The powder was dried and heat-treated in modified microwaves. The samples were pre-treated at 50 and 800 C during I h and then heated in microwaves for 30 s, 2 and 4 min. The formation process and structure of the powders were studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence (PL) and transmission electronic microscopy (TEM). XRD presents only picks corresponding to the YAG phase and confirmed by TEM. PL date showed that the YAG phase was formed in 2 min with the samples pre-treated at 50 C. For the samples pretreated at 800 degrees C, the YAG phase appears in 30s. The excitation spectra present a maximum of 394 nm corresponding to the L-5(6) level and emission spectra of Eu III ion present bands characteristic transitions arising from the D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J= 1, 2, 3, 4) monifolds excited at their maximum. The magnetic dipole D-5(0) -> F-7(1) transition presents more intensity than the electric dipole D-5(0) -> F-7(2) transition. This methodology showed efficiency in obtaining YAG phase. Results of crystal structure refinements and phase quantification for samples of Co-doped lanthanum chromites with nominal composition LaCr(1-x)Co(x)O(3), for x=0.00, 0.10, 0.20, and 0.30, prepared by combustion synthesis are presented. The resulting powders were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The XRD patterns were obtained with Cu K alpha radiation for non-doped lanthanum chromite sample and additionally with Cr K alpha radiation for Co-doped lanthanum chromites samples, in order to enhance the signal from scattering. Rietveld analysis of XRD data showed that the studied samples presented the lanthanum chromite with an orthorhombic structure (Pnma), except for the composition with x=0.30, in which the space group was found to be R (3) over barc. The novel coordination polymer with the formula {[Nd2(2,5-tdc)3(dmf)2(H2O)2].dmf.H2O}n (2,5-tdc2-=2,5-thiophedicarboxylate anion and dmf=dimethylformamide) has been synthesized and characterized by thermal analysis (TG/DTA), vibrational spectroscopy (FTIR) and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). Structure analysis reveals that Nd(III) ions show dicapped trigonal prism coordination geometry. The 2,5-tdc2- ligands connect four Nd(III) centers, adopting (κ1 - κ1) - (κ1 - κ1) - μ4 coordination mode, generating an interesting 6-connected uninodal 3D network. Photophysical properties were studied using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DR) and excitation/emission spectra. The photoluminescence data show the near infrared emission (NIR) with the characteristic 4F3/2→4IJ (J=9/2, 11/2 and 13/2) transitions of Nd(III) ion, indicating that 2,5-tdc2- is able to act as a sensitizer for emission in NIR region. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.
