OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the accidents with biological material among medical students interning in a trauma emergency room and identify key related situations, attributed causes and prevention. METHODS: we conducted a study with a quantitative approach. Data were collected through a questionnaire applied via internet, with closed, multiple-choice questions regarding accidents with biological material. The sample comprised 100 students. RESULTS: thirty-two had accidents with biological material. Higher-risk activities were local anesthesia (39.47%), suture (18.42%) and needle recapping (15.79%). The main routes of exposure to biological material were the eyes or mucosa, with 34%, and syringe needle puncture, with 45%. After contamination, only 52% reported the accident to the responsible department. CONCLUSION: The main causes of accidents and routes of exposure found may be attributed to several factors, such as lack of training and failure to use personal protective equipment. Educational and preventive actions are extremely important to reduce the incidence of accidents with biological materials and improve the conduct of post-exposure. It is important to understand the main causes attributed and situations related, so as general and effective measures can be applied.

Introduction: The biological processes involved in noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) are still unclear. The involvement of inflammation in this condition has been suggested. Objective: To investigate the association between interleukin - 6 (IL-6) polymorphism and susceptibility to NIHL.Methods: This was a cross-sectional study with a sample of 191 independent elderly individuals aged >60 years of age. Information on exposure to occupational noise was obtained by interviews. Audiological evaluation was performed using pure tone audiometry and genotyped through PCR by restriction fragment length polymorphism - PCR-RFLP. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test and the odds ratio (OR), with the significance level set at 5%.Results: Among elderly with hearing loss (78.0%), 18.8% had a history of exposure to occupational noise. There was a statistically significant association between the genotype frequencies of the IL-6 - 174 and NIHL. The elderly with the CC genotype were less likely to have hearing loss due to occupational noise exposure when compared to those carrying the GG genotype (OR = 0.0124; 95% CI 0.0023-0.0671; p<0.001).Conclusion: This study suggests there is an association of polymorphisms in the IL-6 gene at position - G174C with susceptibility to noise-induced hearing loss. The present study aimed to develop a methodology for the collection, transfer, storage and processing of vibration levels emitted in jobs occupied in agricultural machinery. The reason of this work is the study the vibration dose applied to operators of heavy vehicles and its relation to occupational health, linking the still high number of accidents involving farm machinery in relation to overturning (tipping). There is a need for the development and improvement of efficient tools in measuring vibration and tilt machine work, which minimize damage to health and accident risks for operators.

There is great concern about the possible harmful effects of exposure to volatile anesthetics. The current study aimed at evaluating, for the first time, the effects of occupational exposure to anesthetic gases on physicians who work in operating rooms, by determining several inflammatory cytokines. Plasma inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, -6, -8, -10, -12, TNF-α) were investigated in 30 individuals who were allocated into two groups of 15: the exposed group, consisting of operating room medical personnel exposed to a mixture of anesthetic gases for 3 years, and a control group composed of medical personnel not exposed to anesthetic gases. The concentrations of volatile anesthetics were measured in the operating room by means of an infrared portable analyzer Our findings suggest an increase of the pro-inflammatory IL-8 (p < 0.05) in medical personnel exposed to high concentrations of anesthetic gases, even for a relatively short period.

According to Statistical Yearbook of Social Security (2011), the number of accidents at work recorded in the agricultural sector is quite high, in the year 2010 there are records of thirty-four thousand nine hundred and ninetysix accidents, and in the year of 2011 there were thirty-one thousand and ninety-six accidents in the industry. Among so many diseases and accidents at work hearing loss is one of them. According to the Pan American Health Organization (2011) the Occupational hearing loss is then jury to the worker's health, often in the workplace. Mechanical vibrations are also present in many human activities exposing employees to an extremely aggressive agent. The combined action of these two factors can cause damage to the health of the worker, in this way, noise and vibration are the two major occupational agents present in the brush cutter operator activity. In the case there is another risk factor, the open work, which exposes the employee to the Sun’s rays and the high temperature indices. Studies have shown that: noise exceeds 115 dB (A) vibration 4.0 m/s2 and thermal stress of 29.9 o C. Ergonomic evaluations also demonstrated that the activity cause injury to workers.
