The temperature dependence has been investigated for the photoinduced birefringence in Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films from the azocopolymer 4-[N- ethyl -N-(2-hydroxyethyl)] amino-2'-chloro-4'-nitroazobenzene (MMA-DR13) mixed with cadmium stearate. The buildup and relaxation of the birefringence in the range from 20 to 296 K were fitted with a Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts (KWW) function, with a beta-value of 0.78-0.98 for the build-up and 0.18-0.27 for the decay. This is consistent with a distribution of time constants for the kinetics of the birefringence processes. The maximum birefringence increased with increasing temperature up to 120 K because the free volume fluctuation also increased with temperature. Above 120 K, the birefringence decreased with temperature as thermal diffusion dominates. In the latter range of temperature, an Arrhenius behavior is inferred for both build-up and decay of birefringence. In each case two activation energies were obtained: 0.8 and 5 kJ/mol for the build-up and 10 and 30 kJ/mol for the decay. The energies for the build-up are much lower than those associated with motion of the polymer chain, which means that the dynamics is governed by the orientation of the chromophores. For the decay, local motion of lateral groups of the polymer chains becomes important as the activation energies are within the range of gamma-relaxation energies. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. B.V. Fluorescent lamp model based on equivalent resistances, considering the effects of dimming operation

This paper presents a new methodology for the determination of fluorescent lamp models based on equivalent resistances. One important feature of the proposed methodology is concerned with the inclusion of the filaments into the model, considering the effects of dimming operation on the equivalent resistances. The classical Series-Resonant Parallel-Loaded Half-Bridge inverter is used as the power stage of the ballast. Moreover, the variation of the inverter's switching frequency is the dimming technique assumed for the analyses. Results obtained with a F32T8 lamp indicate that the accuracy of the model is very satisfactory. Thus, the lamp models obtained with the proposed methodology have the potential to serve as an important tool for ballast designers, considering the necessity for evaluating the lamp/ballast compatibility, according to issues concerned to the operating conditions of the electrodes' filaments.

Samples of water based commercial acrylic resin paints were spread in a film form on slides, dried at room temperature and exposed to solar radiation for up to eight months.The characterization and quantification of resins and charges in the white paint emulsion were carried out for the thermal decomposition. Besides this, X-ray diffractometry was used to identify CaCO3 as charge and TiO2 (rutile phase) as pigment.It was observed through thermal techniques similar behavior to the samples even though with varied exposure time.Kinetic studies of the samples allowed to obtain the activation energy (Ea) and Arrhenius parameters (A) to the thermal decomposition of acrylic resin to three different commercial emulsion (called P-1, P-2, P-3) through non-isothermal procedures. The values of E. varied regarding the exposition time (eight months) and solar radiation from 173 to 197 U mol(-1) (P-1 sample), from 175 to 226 W mol(-1) (P-2 sample) and 206 to 197 kJ mol(-1) (P-3 sample).Kinetic Compensation Effect (KCE) observed for samples P-2 and P-3 indicate acrylic resin s present in these may be similar in nature. This aspect could be observed by a small difference in the thermal behavior of the TG curves from P I to P-2 and P-3 sample.The simulated kinetic model to all the samples was the autocatalytic estdk Berggreen.

This paper is aimed at addressing the differences observed in film properties when poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluorethylene) P(VDF-TrFE) films are fabricated using distinct methods. Samples were obtained either from casting a solution or by compression molding from a molten phase and characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It is shown that the main differences between melt-solidified and cast films arise from the thermal treatment inherent in the former samples.

A series of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM)-acrylic acid-ethyl methacrylate terpolymers with varied monomer compositions was prepared by radical polymerization. The solution behavior of these polymers was studied in dilute aqueous solution using spectrophotometry, fluorescence spectroscopy and high-sensitivity differential scanning calorimetry. The results obtained revealed that the lower critical solution temperatures depend strongly on the copolymer composition, solution pH and ionic strength. At a high pH, the ionization of acrylic acid (AA) units leads to an increase in solution cloud points (T-c). Solutions of polymers containing 10% or less of AA display a constant T-c for pH above 5.5, with 15% there is a continuous increase in T-c with pH and, for higher AA contents, no clouding was observed within the studied temperature range. Fluorescence probe studies were conducted by following the I (1)/I (3) ratio of pyrene vibronic bands and the emission of anilinonaphtalene sulfonic acid, sodium salt (ANS), both approaches revealing the existence of hydrophobic domains for polymers with higher ethyl methacrylate content at temperatures lower than T-c, suggesting some extent of aggregation and/or a coil-to-globule transition. Scanning calorimetry measurements showed an endothermic transition at temperatures agreeing with the previously detected cloud points. Moreover, the transition curves became broader and with a smaller transition enthalpy, as both the AA content and the solution pH were increased. These broader transitions were interpreted to be the result of a wider molecular distribution upon polymer ionization, hence, displaying varied solution properties. The decrease in transition enthalpy was rationalized as a consequence of reminiscent hydration of NIPAM units, even after phase separation, owing to the presence of electric charges along the polymer chain.

Statement of problem. Acrylic resin denture teeth soften upon immersion in water, and the heating generated during microwave sterilization may enhance this process.Purpose. Six brands of acrylic resin denture teeth were investigated with respect to the effect of microwave sterilization and water immersion on Vickers hardness (VHN).Material and Methods. The acrylic resin denture teeth (Dentron [D], Vipi Dent Plus [V], Postaris [P], Biolux [B], Trilux [T], and Artiplus [A]) were embedded in heat-polymerized acrylic resin within polyvinylchloride tubes. For each brand, the occlusal surfaces of 32 identical acrylic resin denture posterior teeth were ground flat with 1500-grit silicon carbide paper and polished on a wet polishing wheel with a slurry of tin oxide. Hardness tests were performed after polishing (control group, C) after polishing followed by 2 cycles of microwave sterilization at 650 W for 6 minutes (MwS group), after polishing followed by 90-day immersion in water (90-day Wim group), and after polishing followed by 90-day storage in water and 2 cycles of microwave sterilization (90-day Wim + MwS group). For each specimen, 8 hardness measurements were made and the mean was calculated. Data were analyzed with a 2-way analysis of variance followed by the Bonferroni procedure to determine any significance between pairs of mean values (alpha=.01).Results: Mircrowave sterilization of specimens significantly decreased (P <.001) the hardness of the acrylic resin denture tooth specimens P (17.8 to 16.6 VHN, V (18.3 to 15.8 VHN), T (17.4 to 15.3 VHN), B (16.8 to 15.7 VHN), and A (17.3 to 15.7 VHN). For all acrylic resin denture teeth, no significant differences in hardness were found between the groups Mws, 90-day Wim, and 90-day Wim + MwS, with the exception of the 90-day Wim + MwS tooth A specimens (14.4 VHN), which demonstrated significant lower mean values (P <.001) than the 90-day Wim (15.8 VHN) and MwS (15.7 VHN) specimens.Conclusions. For specimens immersed in water for 90 days, 2 cycles of microwave sterilization had no effect on the hardness of most of the acrylic resin denture teeth.

Acrylic resin denture teeth often exhibit rapid occlusal wear, which may lead to a loss of chewing efficiency and a loss of vertical dimension of occlusion. The use of metal occlusal surfaces on the acrylic resin denture teeth will minimize occlusal wear. Several articles have described methods to construct metal occlusal surfaces; however, these methods are time-consuming, costly, and sometimes considered to be unesthetic. These methods also require that the patient be without the prosthesis for the time necessary to perform the laboratory procedures. This article presents a quick, simple, and relatively inexpensive procedure for construction of composite occlusal surfaces on complete and partial dentures.

The aim of this study was to assess and apply a microsatellite multiplex system for parentage determination in alpacas. An approach for parentage testing based on 10 microsatellites was evaluated in a population of 329 unrelated alpacas from different geographical zones in Peru. All microsatellite markers, which amplified in two multiplex reactions, were highly polymorphic with a mean of 14.5 alleles per locus (six to 28 alleles per locus) and an average expected heterozygosity (H-E) of 0.8185 (range of 0.698-0.946). The total parentage exclusion probability was 0.999456 for excluding a candidate parent from parentage of an arbitrary offspring, given only the genotype of the offspring, and 0.999991 for excluding a candidate parent from parentage of an arbitrary offspring, given the genotype of the offspring and the other parent. In a case test of parentage assignment, the microsatellite panel assigned 38 (from 45 cases) offspring parentage to 10 sires with LOD scores ranging from 2.19 x 10(+13) to 1.34 x 10(+15) and Delta values ranging from 2.80 x 10(+12) to 1.34 x 10(+15) with an estimated pedigree error rate of 15.5%. The performance of this multiplex panel of markers suggests that it will be useful in parentage testing of alpacas.
