During the twentieth century the inorganic electronics was largely developed being present in various industrial equipment or household use. However, at the end of that century were verified electronic properties in organic compounds, giving rise to the field of organic electronics. Since then, the physical properties of elementary devices such as diodes and organic transistors have been studied. In this work was studied the properties of diode devices fabricated with a semiconductor polymer, the poly-o-methoxyaniline (POMA). Devices containing electrodes of Au and Al were fabricated with semiconductor polymer of different doping levels. We found that the rectifying behavior for the heterojunctions metal/polimer are reached only for high doping level (with conductivity greater than 1,77. 10-9 S / cm), which gives the devices characteristic of a Schottky diode. The rectifying behavior was observed for electric fields of low magnitude, below the operating field (~ 600 V/cm), while for electric field greater than 600 V/cm the a linear behavior I vs.V was obtained. We determined that this Ohmic behavior arises from the charge transport over the volume of the semiconductor material after the lowering of the metal/semiconductor barrier. In devices with weakly doped semiconductor, the electrical resistance of the volume becomes high and the process of charge transportation is dominated by the volume, for any intensity of the applied electric field

Fuel cells are a very promising solution to the problems of power generation and emission of pollutant to the environment, excellent to be used in stationary application and mobile application too. The high cost of production of these devices, mainly due to the use of noble metals as anode, is a major obstacle to massive production and deployment of this technology, however the use of intermetallic phases of platinum combined with other metals less noble has been evaluated as electrodes in order to minimize production costs and still being able to significantly improve the catalytic performance of the anode. The study of intermetallic phases, exclusively done by experimental techniques is not complete and demand that other methods need to be applied to a deeper understanding of the behavior geometric properties and the electronic structure of the material, to this end the use of computer simulation methods, which have proved appropriate for a broader understanding of the geometric and electronic properties of the materials involved, so far not so well understood.. The use of computational methods provides answers to explain the behavior of the materials and allows assessing whether the intermetallic may be a good electrode. In this research project was used the Quantum-ESPRESSO package, based on the DFT theory, which provides the self-consistent field calculations with great precision, calculations of the periodic systems interatomic force, and other post-processing calculations that points to a knowledge of the geometric and electronic properties of materials, which may be related to other properties of them, even the electrocatalytic. The electronic structure is determined from the optimized geometric structure of materials by analyzing the density of states (DOS) projected onto atomic orbital, which determines the influence of the electrocatalytic properties of the material... The electronic, structural properties and elastic constants of the wurtzite phase of zinc oxide, ZnO, was investigated using computer simulation at Density Functional Theory level, with B3LYP hybrid functional and Hartree-Fock methodology. The electronic properties as well the band energy was investigated through the analysis of the band structures and density of states (DOS), and the mechanical properties was studied through the calculus of the elastic constants C11, C33, C44, C12 e C13. The results are in good agreement with experimental data found in the literature and in accordance with results obtained by another theoretical methodology

MgTiO3 (MTO) thin films were prepared by the polymeric precursor method with posterior spin-coating deposition. The films were deposited on Pt(111)/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrates and heat treated at 350 °C for 2 h and then heat treated at 400, 450, 500, 550, 600, 650 and 700 °C for 2 h. The degree of structural order−disorder, optical properties, and morphology of the MTO thin films were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), micro-Raman spectroscopy (MR), ultraviolet− visible (UV−vis) absorption spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) measurements, and field-emission gun scanning electron microscopy (FEG-SEM) to investigate the morphology. XRD revealed that an increase in the annealing temperature resulted in a structural organization of MTO thin films. First-principles quantum mechanical calculations based on density functional theory (B3LYP level) were employed to study the electronic structure of ordered and disordered asymmetric models. The electronic properties were analyzed, and the relevance of the present theoretical and experimental results was discussed in the light of PL behavior. The presence of localized electronic levels and a charge gradient in the band gap due to a break in the symmetry are responsible for the PL in disordered MTO lattice.

Interest in the electronic properties of carbon nanotubes has increased in recent years. These materials can be used in the development of electrochemical sensors for the measurement and monitoring of analytes of environmental interest, such as pharmaceuticals, dyes, and pesticides. This work describes the use of homemade screen-printed electrodes modified with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) for the electrochemical detection of the fungicide thiram. The electrochemical characteristics of the proposed system were evaluated using cyclic voltammetry, with investigation of the electrochemical behavior of the sensor in the presence of the analyte, and estimation of electrochemical parameters including the diffusion coefficient, electron transfer coefficient (α), and number of electrons transferred in the catalytic electro-oxidation. The sensor response was optimized using amperometry. The best sensor performance was obtained in 0.1 mol L-1 phosphate buffer solution at pH 8.0, where a detection limit of 7.9 x 10-6 mol L-1 was achieved. Finally, in order to improve the sensitivity of the sensor, square wave voltammetry (SWV) was used for thiram quantification, instead of amperometry. Using SWV, a response range for thiram from 9.9 x 10-6 to 9.1 x 10-5 mol L-1 was obtained, with a sensitivity of 30948 µA mol L-1, and limits of detection and quantification of 1.6 x 10-6 and 5.4 x 10-6 mol L-1, respectively. The applicability of this efficient new alternative methodology for thiram detection was demonstrated using analyses of enriched soil samples.

Fuel cells powered directly with ethanol (Direct Ethanol Fuel Cell-DEFC) are very attractive for the possibility of using a renewable fuel in the generation of clean energy. However, it is still necessary to deepen the understanding of catalytic processes and their dependence on the catalytic properties. This work proposes to study the catalytic activity of ethanol oxidation in an alkaline medium of Pd nanoparticles supported in carbon oxide hybrids using various transition metal oxides (MoO3, TiO2, WO3 and ZrO2). The materials prepared were characterized by techniques such as X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) to verify the structure, the distribution of particles in the supports and the presence of Pd on particles oxide. Experiments of X-rays absorption spectroscopy were carried out using soft X-rays (SXS) to evaluate the changes in the electronic properties of the Pd particles caused by interactions with different oxides. Measurements of cyclic voltammetry and potential sweeps of adsorbed CO oxidation allowed evaluating general aspects of the catalysts' electrochemical behavior and determining the electrochemically active area thereof. The catalytic performances of ethanol oxidation in alkaline medium were evaluated by electrochemical techniques (potential scan and chronoamperometry), and showed an improvement in activity with the addition of oxides in material containing only carbon, which was most pronounced for the catalyst containing TiO2. This improvement was predominantly associated with the electronic effects caused by the interaction of Pd on the support, causing a vacancy in the 4d band of Pd which, in turn, produces variations in adsorption energies of the species...
