Hemiodus jatuarana, a new species of the Hemiodontidae from Oriximina, rio Trombetas, Amazon Basin, Brazil, is described. The new species can be readily distinguished from its congeners by the presence of a horizontally elongated dark spot on the caudal peduncle, and by the absence of any other dark pigmentation pattern on the body. Hemiodus jatuarana is readily separated from H. immaculatus, another species without dark pigmentation on the body, by having 25 - 27 epibranchial and 36 - 37 ceratobranchial gill rakers on the first branchial arch, and caudal-fin lobes without longitudinal stripes, vs. 14 - 16 and 21 - 25 gill rakers, and a conspicuous longitudinal stripe on each caudalfin lobe in H. immaculatus. The new species is only known from its type-locality, where it cooccurs with H. immaculatus.

Morphological and functional alterations caused by chronic alcohol ingestion in testes and accessory sex organs have been studied both in man and in laboratory animals. The aim of the present study was to examine the possible occurrence of deleterious effects of chronic alcohol ingestion on the secretory epithelium of the ventral prostate of mice. Twenty-four adult male C57BL/6J mice were divided into three groups. The alcohol-treated group was allowed to drink only 6% (v/v) ethanol, the isocaloric group received a diet of water/sucrose with a calorie content equivalent to a 6% alcohol solution and the control group received water. Both groups were fed ad libitum with solid Purina rat chow. After 120 days, animals from each group were anesthetized with ethyl ether, weighed and processed for light and transmission electron microscopy. The results demonstrated reduction in the glandular epithelium cell height and disorganization of the Golgi complex. Moreover, abundant membrane-bound structures, most likely representing cytoplasmic material, were observed, as well as accumulation of dense bodies. Statistical analysis showed that bodyweight gain was similar for both groups. In conclusion, chronic alcohol ingestion has harmful effects on the secretory epithelium cells of the ventral lobe of the prostate of mice after 120 days of treatment. The placental vasculature of five hystricomorph rodents was examined by latex injection of the blood vessels, immunohistochemistry and scanning electron microscopy of vessel casts. The pattern of branching of the vessels is described at the level of fine structure. The placenta is divided into lobes separated by interlobular trophoblast. Fetal arteries course through the interlobular areas and give rise to capillaries from which blood drains into veins at the centre of the lobes. Maternal blood reaches the placenta through spiral arteries that pass around the perimeter of the subplacenta. They supply large maternal blood sinuses, lined by trophoblast, which run through the interlobular areas and into the centre of the lobes. Here they supply fine channels that run parallel to the fetal capillaries, so that maternal blood flows from the centre of the lobe to the periphery. This arrangement provides the morphological basis for countercurrent exchange. The maternal channels of the labyrinth drain into spaces formed by the latticework of the interlobular trophoblast and thence through venous lacunae to a basal venous lacunar ring. The subplacenta is supplied by a single fetal artery. The vessels within the subplacenta pursue a tortuous course with dilatations and constrictions as in an endocrine gland. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. We analyzed the effect of the acylpolyaminetoxin JSTX-3 on the epileptogenic discharges induced by perfusion of human hippocampal slices with artificial cerebrospinal fluid lacking Mg2+ or N-methyl-D-aspartate. Hippocampi were surgically removed from patients with refractory medial temporal lobe epilepsy, sliced in the surgical room and taken to the laboratory immersed in normal artificial cerebrospinal fluid. Epileptiform activity was induced by perfusion with Mg2+-free artificial cerebrospinal fluid or by iontophoretically applied N-methyl-D-aspartate and intracellular and field recordings of CAI neurons were performed. The ictal-like discharges induced by Mg2+-free artificial cerebrospinal fluid and N-methyl-D-aspartate were blocked by incubation with JSTX-3. This effect was similar to that obtained with the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist DL(-)2-amino-5 phosphonovaleric acid. Our findings suggest that in human hippocampal neurons, the antiepileptic effect of JSTX-3 is mediated by its action on N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor.

Numerous nymphoid reproductives were found in three field nests of Armitermes euamignathus collected in Brazil. We report here a morphological description and a biometric study of these individuals. Nymphoid replacements displayed narrow wing buds when compared with those present in nymphs from the three last instars. Thorax morphology of the nymphoids was similar to the penultimate nymphal instar (N4) or to the ultimate nymphal instar (N5), and their origin from these instars of nymphs is discussed. All the nymphoids had eyes, ocelli, and 15 antennal segments. The nymphoid females from nest 1 had different grades of physogastry and royal fat body. The nymphoid females from nests 2 and 3, the nymphoid males from all nests, and the primary king from nests 2 acid 3 had a common fat body, which is similar to that present in alates. The ovaries and the testes of nymphoids were fully mature and the corpora allata larger than those in imagoes. The mandibular glands were also enlarged in nymphoids but the tergal glands were absent. Background: the paca is a South American rodent with potential as a commercial food animal. We examined paca placenta as part of a wider effort to understand the reproductive biology of this species.Methods: Thirteen specimens between midgestation and term of pregnancy were studied by light and transmission electron microscopy.Results: the placenta is divided into several lobes separated by interlobular trophoblast. Maternal arterial channels and fetal veins are found at the centre of each lobe. In the labyrinth, maternal blood flows through trophoblast-lined lacunae in close proximity to the fetal capillaries. The interhaemal barrier is of the haemomonochorial type with a single layer of syncytiotrophoblast. Caveolae occur in the apical membrane of the syncytiotrophoblast and recesses in the basal membrane, but there is no evidence of transtrophoblastic channels. The interlobular areas consist of cords of syncytiotrophoblast defining maternal blood channels that drain the labyrinth. Yolk sac endoderm covers much of the fetal surface of the placenta. The subplacenta comprises cytotrophoblast and syncytiotrophoblast. There are dilated intercellular spaces between the cytotrophoblasts and lacunae lined by syncytiotrophoblast. In the junctional zone between subplacenta and decidua, there are nests of multinucleated giant cells with vacuolated cytoplasm. The entire placenta rests on a pedicle of maternal tissue. An inverted yolk sac placenta is also present. The presence of small vesicles and tubules in the apical membrane of the yolk sac endoderm and larger vesicles in the supranuclear region suggest that the yolk sac placenta participates in maternal-fetal transfer of protein.Conclusion: the paca placenta closely resembles that of other hystricomorph rodents. The lobulated structure allows for a larger exchange area and the development of precocial young.

Sexual dimorphism of green lacewings is discussed, citing previously known examples of this structural phenomenon on the frons, antennal scape, and forewings. Newly recognized dimorphism is cited in Ceraeochrysa cubana for the vertex and abdominal spiracles.

The elements related to the morphology of the liver of paca (Cuniculus paca), the second largest rodent of the Brazilian fauna, were observed; this species present zootechnical potential. Eight animals from the animals sector of Faculdade de Ciencias Agrarias e Veterinarias - Campus of Jaboticabal - UNESP, which is duly certified by IBAMA as an experimental breeding institute, were used. Through a dissection procedure, it was found that the liver of the paca is located in the cranial portion of the abdomen, immediately after the diaphragm, to which it is connected by the triangular, coronary, and falciform ligaments, having its bigger part located right to the medium plan. The liver of this rodent presents the following lobation: right lateral lobe, right medial lobe, quadrate lobe, left medial lobe, and left lateral lobe, besides the caudate lobe formed by the papillary process of caudate lobe and the caudate process of caudate lobe. Gallbladder is located between the quadrate and right medial lobes. Fragments of this organ were collected, fixed, and histologically prepared, being the samples analyzed through light microscopy. It was microscopically observed that intralobular connective tissue is scarce, basically it consists polyhedral hepatocytes organized into cords interposed between sinusoids and the portal triads are found in the lobe, consisting of the portal vein, hepatic artery, and biliary duct.

Four groups of 10 young adult Wistar male rats were fed ad libitum on a protein-free diet for periods of 7, 28, 56 and 84 days. Control groups were fed on a 20% casein diet. Food intake and body weights of rats were registered. Plasma protein levels and liver weight and fat content were determined. Sections of the caudate lobe were studied histologically. Fatty changes were classified in three grades. Protein-deficient rats exhibited loss of body weight and had low levels of plasma protein concentration. Liver lost weight after 7 days of protein deficiency; there was a gradual reduction in liver weight as periods of protein deprivation were longer. After 7 days, liver fat concentration was not significantly higher than in the respective control group; it was significantly higher in all the other malnourished animals, As periods of protein deprivation were longer, fatty changes became more severe. Other hepatic lesions were found in 5 of the 10 rats submitted to the longest period of protein deficiency. One of the rats showed a diffuse cellular atrophy, 2 animals showed an extensive haemorrhagic necrosis, another showed a focal area of reticulum collapse and the last exhibited a distortion of the normal architecture of the liver due to diffuse reticulum collapse and early nodular regeneration; these 2 last rats showed early fibrosis in portal areas. The findings suggest that other deficiencies may complicate the protein deficiency when rats are given a protein-free diet over prolonged periods. Even if the protein-deficient diet has protective nutrients, it may be that, when rats eat less food, as occurs in prolonged experiments deficiency of one or all of these elements can occur, depending on their relative amount in diet.

The case of a six-day-old neonate admitted in an emergency situation because of dyspnea and increasing cyanosis is reported. Despite abnormal opacification on the chest X-ray and left ventricular overload on the electrocardiogram and echocardiogram, features compatible with the disease, the diagnosis of massive pulmonary arteriovenous fistula affecting the whole left superior lobe, was made possible only after necroscopic examination.

Coptotermes havilandi Holmgren is an oriental species introduced into Brazil. Despite its economic impact as structural pest, very little is known about the biology of this termite. This paper describes observations of C. havilandi swarming in the city of Rio Claro (SP, Brazil), and reports the first data on incipient colonies reared in a laboratory in Brazil. The preoviposition period lasted about a week after pairing; oviposition began in most of the incipient colonies during the second week. Antennal mutilation occurred on all reproductives. The mean number of the first batch of eggs was 13. In general, first instar brood hatched 60-70 days after set up of the colonies. After two years of pairing there was a small population (less than 100 individuals) and limited soldier production (n=2) in incipient colonies of C. havilandi.

The author studied the mnemonic activity from epileptic patients with complex partial seizures (CPS), with the aims: 1) to identify memory disorders; and 2) to compare the patients' with the controls' results. Fifty adult patients and 20 subjects without neuropsychiatric disorders were studied. The methods consisted in: 1) investigation of the mnemonic activity through the Wechsler Memory Test (subtests: Storage and Recall, Recent Memory, and Immediate Memory); 2) comparison among the results of both groups; association from mnemonic activity with brain SPECT. In the three subtests, the patients showed cognitive performance significantly lower than the controls (p <0,05). It was found association from reduced blood flow, mainly in left temporal region, with memory impairment of the three subtetsts. The conclusion was that the CPS are associated to memory impairment.
