Problem The most common DNA lesion generated by oxidative stress (OS) is 7, 8-dihydro-8-oxoguanine (8-oxoG) whose excision repair is performed by 8-oxoguanine glycosylase (OGG1). We investigated OGG1 expression changes in fetal membranes from spontaneous preterm birth (PTB) and preterm premature rupture of the membranes (pPROM) and its changes in vitro in normal fetal membranes exposed to OS inducer water-soluble cigarette smoke extract (CSE). Method of study DNA damage was determined in amnion cells treated with CSE by comet and FLARE assays. OGG1 mRNA expression and localization in fetal membranes from clinical specimens and in normal term membranes exposed to CSE were examined by QRT-PCR and by immunohistochemistry. Results DNA strand and base damage was seen in amnion cells exposed to CSE. OGG1 expression was 2.5-fold higher in PTB samples compared with pPROM (P=0.045). No significant difference was seen between term and pPROM or PTB and term. CSE treatment showed a nonsignificant decrease in OGG1. OGG1 was localized to both amnion and chorion with less intense staining in pPROM and CSE-treated membranes. Conclusion Increased OS-induced DNA damage predominated by 8-oxoG is likely to persist in fetal cells due to reduced availability of base excision repair enzyme OGG1. This can likely lead to fetal cell senescence associated with some adverse pregnancy outcome.

The litchi erineum mite, Aceria litchii (Keifer), is the major pest of litchi, Litchi chinensis Sonnerat (Sapindaceae). This study evaluated the effect of 11 pesticides on the survival of A. litchii as well as on the survival and reproduction of Phytoseius intermedius Evans& McFarlane, the predator most found in association with it in Brazil. The containment of A. litchii in small petri dishes whose bottoms were covered with a solidified paste made of a mixture of gypsum and activated charcoal (9: 1 in volume), kept humid, was shown to be adequate for this type of study. For the evaluation of the effect of pesticides on A. litchii, mites leaving the erinia from the pieces of litchi leaves (removed from the plants approximate to 24 h earlier) were sprayed under a Potter tower and immediately transferred to the 2.5-cm-diameter petri dishes. After 2, 12, 24, and 48 h of the application, the dishes were examined to evaluate the mite survival. The four pesticides causing the highest levels A. litchii mortality, as well as azadirachtin, were tested for the effect on P. intermedius. For this test, experimental units consisted of discs of uninfested litchi leaves also sprayed under a Potter tower before introducing the predators. Survival and oviposition of the predator were evaluated every 24 h for 5 consecutive days; viability of the eggs laid was also evaluated. Highest mortality of A. litchii occurred with the application of fenpyroximate, sulfur, abamectin, and hexythiazox. Azadirachtin was considered moderately harmful to the predator P. intermedius, whereas other pesticides were classified as harmful. Despite the low efficiency of azadirachtin in the control of the pest, its relative selectivity to P. intermedius would encourage the evaluation on field condition, especially for use in organic production systems.

This work presents the preparation and characterization of PZT ceramic obtained by the polymeric precursor method (PPM). The influence of the synthesis method on the grain size and the morphology are also object of study. The fabrication and characterization of composite films with 0-3 connectivity, immersing nanoparticles of PZT into the non-polar poly(vinylidene fluoride) -PVDF as the polymer matrix were presented. For comparison there are results obtained with composite samples made of ceramic particles unrecovered and recovered with a conducting polymer, the polyaniline (PAni).

In the district of Belém, at São Paulo’s city, the economic transformations have ended up destabilizing the economy industrial leaving marks that can be found today. Idle sheds, abandoned or undefined uses structures are found throughout the neighborhood, creating a scene of decay and abandonment. Despite the problems caused by brownfields, they may be seen as an area of possibilities. The reuse of these areas allows the reutilization of abandoned space in locations where the infrastructure is already available, stopping the expansion of urban spot in places not yet degraded. In the case of disabled older industries, there is a great possibility of site’s contamination that may also pose risks to people and unforeseen during refuncionalization. Therefore, the proper management of these sites is needed before any intervention in the area, where stages of study and research must be conducted in order to prove their actual situation. The survey and study of these areas in the district of Belém in São Paulo provides an overview about the brownfields in Brazil at the same time that contributes to the development of intervention plans and proposes a scenery for the refuncionalization of these sites in the neighborhood.

The Measurement System Analysis (MSA - Measurement System Analysis) is a statistical methodology developed to study and analyze the behavior of the measurement systems, and, therefore, allow the increased of the confidence readings performed by measuring instruments. It’s widely used in the automotive industry since the 90’s and is a mandatory requirement for the approval of the parts according to ISO Standard of the automotive sector. However, the aerospace industry doesn’t require this type of Study, once which the vast majority of aeronautics parts have characteristics (dimensions) with very tight tolerances, closed, ie, at the home of microns. This work aims to create lists of recommendations for definitions of measuring instruments in developing of control plans, which correlates tolerances fields of characteristics for different settings and acceptance of the instrument, classified as optimum, recommended and not recommended, through of the study of R&R (Repeatability and Reproducibility) in aeronautics parts. Every methodology of the experimental part was based on modern strategy of continuous improvement, the DMAIC (Define Measure Analyze Implant Control), in order to achieve better measurement method used in the control of milling aeronautics parts, identifying and reducing the variations of the measurement process. The results of the R&R Study in large part of measuring instrument manuals were considered acceptable and/or recommended, ie with values of %P/T and %RR lower than 30%, providing statistical data which have enabled the elaboration of tables of recommendations, which, from this work, have turned into very important documents and aid for Process Engineering, having in their hands a technical study able to identify which is the most appropriate instrument to get a more robust dimensional... The present investigation intended to understand how Didatic has been interpreted by teachers who work with this discipline in undergraduate courses. We assume that there are still many controversies and contradictions in consideration of the epistemological status of didactics, and that this knowledge object is on constant review by professionals. Initially we were seeking evidence in the plans of courses, however, this search has put us in a situation of confusion, of uncertainty and highlighted structural problems which, at first, prevented us from using pure and simple of the contents of the plans. We analyzed 76 lesson plans, allocated to institutions in different Brazilian states, different types of institutions and the diversity was so great that led us to characterize this study as exploratory and tell us the relevance of analyzing them in the perspective of "facets". To deepen the understanding we were interviewing teachers and two focus groups conducted with teachers of Teaching. Triangulating the analysis of plans, with the reflections from the interviews, the speeches and also in the focus group data, observation of teaching practice, we put some insights on issues, even though preliminary and will require further research.
