This study had the aim of verify the perception of women and pregnant women about the HIV vertical transmission. It was approved by the Ethical Review Board. A semistructured questionnaire, pretested, was used, with open and closed questions which presented variables about socioeconomiccultural status and HIV vertical transmission. After informed consent, 114 women were enrolled in the study, 72 of them pregnant women, who looked for health care on the public health service of a Brazilian city, at São Paulo State, from October, 2009 to January, 2010. None of the interviewed women knew the meaning of HIV vertical transmission term. When asked about HIV transmission from mother to child, 86.8% answered it could happen, but half of them didn’t know how it occurred and only 34.2% knew how to prevent, but in a deficient way. As conclusion, these women did not know the HIV vertical transmission term and when they had some knowledge this was limited. These results serve as support for a preventive program for conscientization of women about HIV vertical transmission.

This study aimed to verify the effect of vibration of plants in the production of fruits and seeds and in the physiological quality of the seeds of the “Malagueta” pepper in a protected cultivated area with open and closed sides. The experiment was conducted at the Experimental Farm of the School of Agronomic Sciences of Universidade Estadual Paulista (FCA/UNESP), located in the city of São Manuel (SP). Two treatments were carried out, which consisted of plants that did and did not undergo vibration. Plants were vibrated manually by swinging the wire attached to the supporting bamboo for about 5 seconds, twice a day for 11 weeks. The design was a randomized block with six repetitions. The same experiment was conducted in two protected environments, with and without anti-aphids screens on the sides, cultivated in the same season. For the comparison of environments, a combined analysis was performed considering each environment as a separate experiment. The characteristics evaluated were: weight and number of fruits per plant; weight, diameter and length of fruit; weight and amount of seeds per fruit; and plant height. For the analysis of seed quality, the characteristics evaluated were: germination percentage; first count of germination; dry matter of seedlings; seedling emergence in substrate; and seedling emergence speed index. Regardless of the environment, vibration affects the physiological quality of seeds. The presence of pollinator insects benefited the production and quality of “Malagueta” pepper seeds and increases the fruit weight.

Usage of pesticies in excessive doses or in an inadequate way to control diseases, pests and weeds, has promoted significant environmental damage, contamination of animals, intoxication of farmers, among others. These factors lead to occur the resistance of weeds, pests and pathogens, the appearance of iatrogenic diseases, biological imbalance and reduction in biodiversity. Seeking less aggressive alternatives, plant extracts have been used successfully. Compared to synthetic products, they offer great advantages as generating new compounds, which pathogens are unable to inactivate, and are less toxic, of rapid degradation in the environment, they have broad modes of action, and are derived from renewable resources. It should be emphasized that there are some limitations on its use. The extracts have potencial as insecticide, fungicide, herbicide and nematicide and are considered of good efficiency. The methodologies for obtaining can be achieved through cold extraction, open and closed hot system. The use of plant extracts reappears as a promising and unique option for integrated management in plant protection, being considered as an alternative to control plant pathogens, demonstrating excellent results without causing harm to the environment and living beings.

Syngonanthus elegans flowers are distributed in capitula whose involucral bracts open and close in a diurnal rhythm. The anatomy of these bracts was studied to understand how such movements occur and how it influences reproductive ecology of the species. The involucral bracts have a single layered epidermis composed of thick-walled cells on the abaxial surface, which are responsible for the movement. Since they are hygroscopic, these cells swell when they absorb water from the surrounding environment, causing the bracts to bend and the capitula to close. In natural conditions, the capitula open by day, when temperature increases and the relative air humidity decreases, and close at night, when temperature decreases and the relative air humidity increases. The involucral bracts may thus protect the flowers from abiotic factors, exposing them only at the time of the day when temperature is higher and insects are more active, favoring pollination by small insects. The closed capitula do not only protect the flowers, but they also function as a shelter for floral visitors as Brachiacantha australe (Coccinellidae) and Eumolpini sp. (Chrysomelidae). These small Coleoptera pollinate the flowers of S. elegans during the day and remain within the closed capitula during the night, in a possible mutualistic relationship. (C) 2008 Elsevier GmbH.
