The Raman, IR absorption and EXAFS spectra at the Ge K-edge and Pb LIII-edge of eight lead germanate glasses, with general formula xPbO(1-x)GeO2 with x = 0.20, 0.25, 0.33, 0.40, 0.50, 0.53, 0.56 and 0.60, have been measured. The occurrence of [GeO6] units besides [GeO4] could not be deduced unambiguously from the data. The vibrational and EXAFS data agree with a progressive depolymerization of the network. Starting from all Ge atoms linked to four bridging oxygens in GeO2 (x = 0), the number of tetrahedral units with one or two non-bridging oxygens increases with x. At low content, Pb2+ ions act as modifiers in the germanate structure, but to a lesser extent than an equivalent number of alkaline ions. © 1993.

The freshwater planktonic alga Kirchneriella aperta was grown in batch cultures to stationary growth phase. Copper and lead complexation properties of the exudate from stationary and exponential growth phases were determined by titrations monitored by ion-selective electrodes. Molecular weight fractionation dialysis) and analysis of the titration data (Scatchard Plot) revealed that K. aperta releases metal-complexing ligands. Copper is associated with low and high molecular weight compounds, whereas lead forms complexes with only high molecular weight compounds. Gas-liquid chromatography showed that mannose and rhamnose make up 74% of the total high molecular weight organic material, with uronic acids present at 19%.

The phase evolution of lead titanate processed by the polymeric precursor method was investigated by thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that the cubic perovskite PbTiO3 (PT) phase is formed from an inorganic amorphous precursor at a temperature of 444 °C. A gradual transition from cubic to tetragonal perovskite PT was observed with the increase of calcination time at this temperature. HRTEM results showed that the cubic PT particles have a size of around 5 nm. The identification of cubic PT as an intermediate phase supports the hypothesis that the chemical homogeneity was kept at the molecular level during the synthesis process, with no cation segregation.

A new strategy for minimization of Cu2+ and Pb2+ interferences on the spectrophotometric determination of Cd2+ by the Malachite green (MG)-iodide reaction using electrolytic deposition of interfering species and solid phase extraction of Cd2+ in flow system is proposed. The electrolytic cell comprises two coiled Pt electrodes concentrically assembled. When the sample solution is electrolyzed in a mixed solution containing 5% (v/v) HNO3, 0.1% (v/v) H2SO4 and 0.5 M NaCl, Cu2+ is deposited as Cu on the cathode, Pb2+ is deposited as PbO2 on the anode while Cd2+ is kept in solution. After electrolysis, the remaining solution passes through an AG1-X8 resin (chloride form) packed minicolumn in which Cd2+ is extracted as CdCl4/2-. Electrolyte compositions, flow rates, timing, applied current, and electrolysis time was investigated. With 60 s electrolysis time, 0.25 A applied current, Pb2+ and Cu2+ levels up to 50 and 250 mg 1-1, respectively, can be tolerated without interference. For 90 s resin loading time, a linear relationship between absorbance and analyte concentration in the 5.00-50.0 μg Cd 1-1 range (r2 = 0.9996) is obtained. A throughput of 20 samples per h is achieved, corresponding to about 0.7 mg MG and 500 mg KI and 5 ml sample consumed per determination. The detection limit is 0.23 μg Cd 1-1. The accuracy was checked for cadmium determination in standard reference materials, vegetables and tap water. Results were in agreement with certified values of standard reference materials and with those obtained by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry at 95% confidence level. The R.S.D. for plant digests and water containing 13.0 μg Cd 1-1 was 3.85% (n = 12). The recoveries of analyte spikes added to the water and vegetable samples ranged from 94 to 104%. Piezoelectric composite, made from ferroelectric ceramic lead zirconate titanate (PZT) and vegetable based polyurethane (PU) polymer, was doped with a semiconductor filler, graphite. The resulting composite (PZT/C/PU) with 49/1/50- vol. % composition could be poled at lower field and shorter time due to the increased conductivity of the polymer phase following the introduction of graphite. The PZT/C/PU composite showed higher pyroelectric coefficient in comparison with the undoped PZT/PU composite with 50/50-vol. % composition. Also, the PZT/C/PU composite has shown the ability to detect both extensional and flexural modes of simulated acoustic emission (AE) at a distance up to 8.0 m from the source, thus indicating that it may be used for detection of structural damages.

Strontium-modified lead titanate thin films with composition Pb1-xSrxTiO3 were grown on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates using the polymeric precursor method. The structural phase evolution as a function of the Sr contents was studied using micro-Raman scattering, specular reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction. The results showed a gradual change from tetragonal to cubic structure, the transition occurring at about x = 0.58. The infrared reflectance spectra showed that the frequency of several peaks decreases as the strontium concentration increases. These features are correlated with a decrease in the tetragonal distortion of the TiO6 octahedra as the strontium concentration increases.

Transparent glass ceramics containing β-PbF2:Er 3+ nanocrystals were obtained through appropriate thermal treatments of a glass of molar composition 60PbGeO3-10PbF2-30CdF 2 doped with 0.5 mol% Er3+. Their optical properties, as well as upconversion processes among erbium ions in the glass and glass ceramic matrix were studied. From absorption spectra, Judd-Ofelt parameters and radiative transition rates for several excited levels were calculated. Emission spectra in the visible and NIR regions were collected, and stimulated emission cross sections were obtained by McCumber theory for the 4F 13/2→4I15/2 transition at 1.5 μm. Red and green upconversion emissions were measured in glass and glass ceramics upon excitation at 980 nm; lifetimes were measured in order to assess the upconversion mechanisms.

The optical limiting behavior and nonlinear optical properties of antimony and lead oxyhalide glasses were discussed. The large nonlinear absorption coefficients which range from 11 to 20 cm/GW was determined using standard Z-scan technique. The photodarkening in the samples were observed which suggested that they can also be useful for inscribing Bragg gratings using green lasers of moderate power.

Blue, green, red, and near-infrared upconversion luminescence in the wavelength region of 480 - 740 nm in Pr3+/Yb3+-codoped lead-cadmium-germanate glass under 980 nm diode laser excitation, is presented. Upconversion emission peaks around 485, 530, 610, 645, and 725 nm which were ascribed to the 3P0 - 3HJ (J=4, 5, and 6), and 3P0 - 3FJ (J=2, and 3,4), transitions, respectively, were observed. The population of the praseodymium upper 3P0 emitting level was accomplished through a combination of ground-state absorption of Yb3+ ions at the 2F7/2, energy-transfer Yb3+(2F 5/2) Pr3+(3H4), and excited-state absorption of Pr3+ ions provoking the 1G4 - 3P0 transition. The dependence of the upconversion luminescence upon the Yb3+-concentration and diode laser power, is also examined, in order to subsidize the proposed upconversion excitation mechanism.

Composites made of calcium modified lead titanate ceramic powder and poly (ether-ether-ketone) high performance polymer matrix were prepared in the film form using a hot press. The acoustic and electromechanical properties of the composites have been determined using the ultrasonic immersion technique and piezoelectric spectroscopy, respectively. The composite film with 60 - 40 vol.% PTCa/PEEK was tested as acoustic emission detector. Preliminary results shown that the piezo composite can be used as sensor to evaluate the behavior of materials.

In this report we investigate the optical properties and energy-transfer upconversion luminescence of Ho3+- and Tb3+/Yb 3+-codoped PbGeO3-PbF2-CdF2 glass-ceramic under infrared excitation. In Ho3+/Yb 3+-codoped sample, green(545 nm), red(652 nm), and near-infrared(754 nm) upconversion luminescence corresponding to the 4S 2(5F4) → 5I8, 5F5 → 5I8, and 4S2(5F4) → 5I 7, respectively, was readly observed. Blue(490 nm) signals assigned to the 5F2,3 → 5I8 transition was also detected. In the Tb3+/Yb3+ system, bright UV-visible emission around 384, 415, 438, 473-490, 545, 587, and 623 nm, identified as due to the 5D3(5G6) → 7FJ(J=6,5,4) and 5D4→ 7FJ(J=6,5,4,3) transitions, was measured. The comparison of the upconversion process in glass ceramic and its glassy precursor revealed that the former samples present much higher upconversion efficiencies. The dependence of the upconversion emission upon pump power, and doping contents was also examined. The results indicate that successive energy-transfer between ytterbium and holmium ions and cooperative energy-transfer between ytterbium and terbium ions followed by excited-state absorption are the dominant upconversion excitation mechanisms herein involved. The viability of using the samples for three-dimensional solid-state color displays is also discussed.

In Lead-cadmium fluorogermanate glasses (PbF2-CdF 2-PbGeO3) the addition of metal fluorides to the base PbGeO3 glass leads to a decrease of the glass transition temperature (Tg) and to an enhancement of the ionic conductivity properties. Based on different spectroscopic techniques (19F NMR, Ge K-edge X-ryas absorption and Raman scattering) an heterogeneous glass structure is proposed at the molecular scale, which can be described by fluoride rich regions permeating the metagermanate chains. The temperature dependence of the 19F NMR lineshapes and relaxation times exhibits the qualitative and quantitative features associated with the high fluoride mobility in these systems. Eu 3+ emission and vibronic spectra are used to follow the crystallization process leading to transparent glass ceramics.

Background: lead poisoning can have a negative impact on the neuropsychological functions, including language, due to the damage it causes to the developthent of the Central Nervous System. Aim: to verify the occurrence of language disorders in children who suffered from led poisoning and to verify the correlation between the lead concentration level in the blood and the language disorders presented by the children. Method: language evaluation of 20 preschoolers, with lead concentration level in the blood above 10μg/dl. Results: 13 children presented language impairment involving only phonology or more than one language subsystem. The statistical analysis indicated that no correlation exists between the severity of the language impairment and the concentration levels of lead. Conclusion: the number of children with language impairment indicates lead poisoning as a risk factor for the present alterations, even though other risk factors for language disorders were found and the absence of correlation between the investigated variables.

This experiment had as objective to evaluate the effect of two probiotics, added in the commercial ration (40% PB) on the productive performance of bullfrog Rana catesbeiana. The test was lead with two dosages of each probiotic (5 g/kg of food and 10 g/kg of food), plus a control group, with three repetitions, totalizing five treatments. The weight gain, the feed conversion (CA) and the specific growth rate (TCE) have been analyzed. The results show that the probiotics affect the weight gain of Rana catesbeiana until reaching 200 g, thus decreasing the time of productivity in 28 days but not improving the CA and the TCE. With bases in these experimental conditions probiotic 1 (Lactobacillus acidofillus, Bifidobacterium bifidum and Enterococcus faecium -3×10 6 UFC/g) at lower dose (5 g/kg of ration) provided the best performance of the animals.
