No Brasil, a cotonicultura localiza-se em regiões onde o índice de precipitação pluvial é de aproximadamente 2.000 mm anuais. A aplicação de reguladores de crescimento em condições com esse índice faz com que o produto aplicado seja lavado antes de ser absorvido pelas plantas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da lavagem do cloreto de mepiquat aplicado no algodoeiro, por chuvas simuladas em diferentes períodos após a aplicação do produto. O trabalho foi realizado em casa de vegetação, utilizando vasos de 12 L, com três plantas da cultivar DeltaOpal. No aparecimento do primeiro botão floral, aplicou-se cloreto de mepiquat na dose de 12,5 g ha-1 de i.a. Os tratamentos consistiram de duas ¢minas de chuva, 10 e 20 mm, a 0, 2, 4, 8, 16 e 32 horas após aplicação do produto e sem chuva, com quatro repetições. Uma chuva de 10 mm foi suficiente para lavar o produto das folhas independentemente do tempo de ocorrência após a aplicação do regulador. Se houver ocorrência de chuva 0, 2, 4, 8, 16 e 32 horas após a aplicação do produto, a reposição deve ser de 131, 125, 120, 110, 93 e 70 mL ha-1, respectivamente.

O algodoeiro (Gossypium hirsutum ) apresenta alta exigência de K e é muito sensível a baixo pH do solo. A maior parte do K chega às raízes das plantas por difusão no solo. Por existir interação do K com Ca e Mg, a calagem pode interferir no movimento do K no solo, afetando a nutrição da planta. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar o efeito de calcário dolomítico e de 0, 15, 30, 45 e 60 g kg-1 de K no suprimento de potássio às raízes do algodoeiro. As plantas foram cultivadas por 40 dias em vasos de 5 L contendo um Latossolo Vermelho-Escuro (68% de areia e 16% de argila). Houve um acréscimo na produção de matéria seca e na acumulação de K em função da adubação potássica. A intercepção radicular do K do solo foi também aumentada pela aplicação de K, mas não foi afetada pela calagem. O fluxo de massa e a difusão foram aumentadas linearmente com a aplicação de K até 60 mg kg-1, nos vasos com calagem. em vasos sem calagem a quantidade de K atingindo as raízes por difusão aumentou até 45 mg kg-1, decrescendo com a dose máxima de potássio. do mesmo modo, mais K entrou em contato com as raízes por fluxo de massa com a maior dose do nutriente. Isto aconteceu porque havia mais raízes finas nos vasos sem calagem e com a dose máxima de potássio. Com a diminuição da distância média entre as raízes, houve maior competição entre elas, culminando com a diminuição do K difundido até as raízes do algodoeiro.

The effect of boron (B) on cotton growth and fruit shedding may be due not only to physiological or biochemical effects, but also to vascular tissue malformation. This experiment investigated petiole and floral peduncle anatomical alterations and growth of cotton supplied with deficient and sufficient B in nutrient solution. Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum cv. 'Delta Opal') plants were grown in solutions containing 0, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5, and 6.0 mu mol L-1 of B from 22 to 36 d after plant emergence (DAPE). From 36 to 51 DAPE, B was omitted from the nutrient solution. Petioles from young leaves and floral bud peduncles (first position of the first sympodial) were sampled and the cross-section anatomy observed under an optical microscope. The number of vascular bundles of the petiole was decreased in B-deficient plants and the xylem was disorganized. Phloem elements in the peduncle vascular cylinder of B-deficient plants did not show clear differentiation. The few xylem elements that were formed were also disorganized. Modifications caused by B deficiency may have impaired B and photosynthate translocation into new cotton growth. Boron accumulation in the shoot of B-deficient plants suggested that there was some B translocation within the plant. It could be inferred that cotton growth would be impaired by the decrease in carbohydrate translocation rather than by B deficiency in the tissue alone.

The present work was conducted in Selvíria county (MS-Brazil), in the agricultural year of 1998/99, for evaluating nitrogen and potassium foliar application to supplement sowing fertilization on cotton (IAC 22) crop. A randomized complete block design with 13 treatments and four replications was used. The treatments were constituted by a control (without foliar application) and nitrogen and/or potassium foliar applications two, four, six or eight weeks after beginning of flowering. The urea was used as source of N and potassium chloride as source of K. Urea in the concentration of 10% and potassium chloride at 4% were applied at a rate of 250 L.ha-1. Height of plants, nodule number, number of reproductive branches, boll per plant, 30 boll mass, yield and fiber percentage were evaluated. It is concluded that the N doses increased the yield and decreased the fiber percentage. There was no evaluated response to the application of K or NK.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the oviposition behavior of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) biotype B in relation to leaf position, plant age, and adult density on cotton plants. The genotype IAC 22 was used to do the tests. In free-choice tests, 20, 30 and 40 day-old plants were used to evaluate age efects and 40 day-old plants to study egg distribution in the plant and on the leaf surface. In a no-choice test, 20 day-old plants were used to evaluate densities of 50, 100 and 150 adults per plant. The lobe areas on the leaf surface and apical leaves were preferred for whitefly egg laying and therefore more suitable for egg sampling in cotton plants. The 20 day-old plants were preferred for oviposition, and the densities of 100 and 150 adults per plant ensured the number of eggs enough to discriminate cotton genotypes with different whitefly resistance degrees.

The aim of this study was to examine the role of nifedipine and Nitric Oxide (NO) on salivary flow and compounds (salivary amylase, saliva total proteins, saliva calcium, sodium and potassium). Male Holtzman rats weighting 200-250 g were anesthetized with zoletil 50 mg kg -1 (tiletamine chloridrate 125.0 mg and zolazepan chloridrate 125.0 mg) into quadriceps muscle and stainless steel cannulas were implanted into their lateral ventricle of the brain (LV). Animals in divided group were injected with nifedipine (50 μg μL -1) alone and in combination with 7-nitroindazol (7-NIT) (40 μg μL -1), neuronal NO Sinthase Inhibitor (nNOSI) and Sodium Nitroprussate (SNP) (30 μg μL -1) NO donor agent. As a secretory stimuli, pilocarpine dissolved in isotonic was administered intraperitoneally (ip) at a dosage of 10 mg kg -1 body weight. Saliva was collected for 7 min with four cotton balls weighing approximately 20 mg each, two of which were placed on either side of the oral cavity, with the other two placed under the tongue. Nifedipine treatment induced a reduction in saliva secretion rate and concentration of amylase, total protein and calcium without changes in sodium and potassium concentration in comparison with controls. Co-treatment of animals with nifedipine and SNP retained flow rate and concentration of amylase, total protein and calcium in normal levels. Co-treatment of animals with nifedipine and 7-NIT potentiated the effect of nifedipine on the reduction of saliva secretion and concentrations of amylase, total protein and calcium. Nifedipine (dihydroperidine) calcium-channel blocker widely in use is associated with salivary dysfunction acting in the central nervous system structures. NO might be the mechanism for protective effect against the nifedipine-induce salivary dysfunction, acting in the CNS. © 2006 Asian Network for Scientific Information.

The cotton crop yield is directly associated with the efficient control of pests. This work evaluated the relationship of different densities of A. argillacea per plant at different cotton plant ages with seed germination of four cotton cultivars: IAC 25, Delta Opal, Fibermax 993, and Fibermax 966. A randomized block design was set up in 4x3 factorial with four replications. Densities of larvae per plant (0, 2, 4, and 6 larvae) was the major factor while plant ages (30, 60 and 90 days after emergency - DAE) the second level factor. Larvae were released on plants with 30, 60 and 90 DAE. The seeds were manually picked, for the evaluation of the germination in the laboratory using the seed viability through sand emergency method. The results showed that studied cotton cultivars differently to defoliate caused by A. argillacea larvae; the cotton development stage had more influence in the physiologic quality of the seeds than the defoliation; the germination is negatively affected when the defoliation took place at 60 DAE.

Strategies of cotton growth as row spacing and use of growth regulator are efficient when the knowledge of crop production potential as well as the amounts of nutrients content. The objective of this study was to evaluate the nutritional status of cotton DeltaOpal cultivar through leaf analysis of macronutrient, chlorophyll index and yield in relation to plant arrangement and managements of the growth regulator. The treatments consisted of plant arrangement: arrangement 1: 88,900 plant ha(-1) and row spacing at 0.9m, arrangement 2: 114,300 plant ha(-1) and row spacing at 0.7m, arrangement 3: 178,000 plant ha(-1) and row spacing at 0.45m; management of growth regulator (mepiquat chloride) at 1.0 L ha(-1) dose, concentration was50g L-1: a-no regulator application; b-single application at 70 days after emergency (d.a.e.); c-split application into four stages (35, 45, 55, and 65 d.a.e.). The reading reviews SPAD chlorophyll, leaf analysis of macronutrients and cotton yield were conducted in three agricultural years 2006/07, 2007/08 and 2008/09, under the experimental design of completely randomized blocks, in a 3x3 factorial scheme totaling up nine treatments with four replications. The reduction of row spacing and increasing plant density gives less absorption of potassium and sulfur by cotton crop. A single application of mepiquat chloride increase calcium leaf content. The split application of mepiquat chloride provides increased SPAD reading index, higher foliar magnesium concentration and highest seed cotton yield.

Avaliou-se a resistência de genótipos de tomateiro selvagens [Lycopersicon pennellii (LA 716), L. hirsutum var. glabratum (PI 126449, PI 134417), L. hirsutum (PI 127826, PI 127827), L. peruvianum (CGO 6707), L. peruvianum var. dentatum (WYR 2020, LA 111), L. peruvianum var. glandulosum (LA 1113-1, LA 1113-2)] e comerciais [(L. esculentum) Gem Pride, Santa Clara, e híbridos Bruna VFN, Carmem, Fortaleza, Débora Plus VFN] ao ácaro rajado (Tetranychus urticae). O número médio de ovos, fases imaturas (larvas, protoninfas e deutoninfas) e adultos por fo­olo foi contado; o índice de preferência para oviposição (IPO) foi calculado. O delineamento experimental foi blocos ao acaso, com 6 repetições. Os genótipos LA 716, PI 126449, PI 134417, PI 127827, PI 127826 e Gem Pride apresentaram não-preferência para oviposição do ácaro rajado, sendo deterrentes quanto à classificação do IPO, enquanto os genótipos LA 111, WYR 2020, LA 1113-2 e LA1113-1 foram os mais preferidos para a oviposição e foram considerados como estimulantes pelo IPO.

Considerando que o armazenamento desempenha papel decisivo na manutenção da qualidade da semente, desenvolveu-se este trabalho com o objetivo de avaliar a qualidade fisio³gica e fitossanitária de sementes de algodão, tratadas quimicamente e armazenadas por doze meses. Foram utilizados dois lotes de sementes de algodão cv. DeltaPine-AC90, deslintados quimicamente, que foram submetidos aos tratamentos fungicidas e inseticidas: testemunha; Disulfoton + Carboxin + Thiram; Carbofuran + Carboxin + Thiram; Imidacloprid + Tolylfluanid + Pencycuron. As sementes foram armazenadas em armazém sem controle de temperatura e umidade relativa do ar. Foram retiradas amostras de sementes no início do armazenamento e a cada dois meses e avaliadas quanto ao teor de água, à porcentagem de germinação, ao vigor (testes de envelhecimento acelerado e de germinação à baixa temperatura), à sanidade e à emergência das p¢ntulas. O delineamento utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial, com quatro repetições. Verificou-se redução da germinação e do vigor de sementes em função do armazenamento. A redução da qualidade fisio³gica associou-se com o aumento na ocorrência de Aspergillus sp. e Penicillium sp. nas sementes. A manutenção da qualidade de sementes de algodão foi obtida até o oitavo mês de armazenagem, podendo-se concluir que: a eficiência do tratamento químico de sementes de algodão depende da combinação de produtos utilizados; não se deve tratar com fungicida sementes de algodão com baixo nível de vigor; a ocorrência dos fungos Aspergillus sp. e Penicillium sp. aumentou com o período de armazenamento nas sementes sem tratamento e que a manutenção da qualidade de sementes de algodão para comercialização depende da sua qualidade inicial e do período de armazenamento.

For to establish the micronutrients sufficiency range for the cotton, was used the method of mathematical chance for nutritional monitory data of three cotton growth locations in the Midwest of the Brazil, evaluating 152 areas. The method of mathematical chance was adequate for to establish cotton micronutrients references values, can be to help parameters were the conventional research cannot to prove in the short time. The micronutrients sufficiency range for productivity of 4000kg ha(-1) were, in the mg kg(-1), 41-89; 4-14; 90-230; 23-100; 25-50, and for 4500kg ha(-1) was 53-83; 4-12; 110-440; 40-60 e 25-50 for B, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn, respectively. The sufficiency ranges indicated was similar to the existing official recommendations, however, is indicated the approach for to supply the specifics of the systems. The limitations of the method can be minimized with the expansion of the nutritional monitoring system in the cotton crops.

The cotton growth occupies about 1.1 million hectares in Brazil and the midwest, especially the state of Mato Grosso, is the largest producer in the country. This work aimed to establish the sufficiency ranges for macronutrients in cotton crops by the method of mathematical chance. The work was carried out from 2000 to 2003 in the cities of Costa Rica (MS), Diamantino and Sapezal (MT), totaling 152 samples of plant tissue and yield. The chance mathematics method was adequate for to establish cotton macronutrients references values, can be to help parameters were the conventional research cannot to prove in the small time space. The use of different yields for the calculation of mathematical chance (4,000 and 4,500kg ha(-1)) in the population studied, no difference between the sufficiency ranges for macronutrients. The macronutrients sufficiency range was, in the mg kg(-1), 33-45; 3.8-5.3; 15-21; 20-36; 4.0-7.2 e 2.8-8.6 for N, P, K, Ca, Mg e S, respectly. The indicated range, however to similar with the recommendations published, they demonstrate improvement about to obtainment of increases productivities.
