Gastrointestinal problems are common, especially in endurance athletes, and often impair performance or subsequent recovery. Generally, studies suggest that 30-50 % of athletes experience such complaints. Most gastrointestinal symptoms during exercise are mild and of no risk to health, but hemorrhagic gastritis, hematochezia, and ischemic bowel can present serious medical challenges. Three main causes of gastrointestinal symptoms have been identified, and these are either physiological, mechanical, or nutritional in nature. During intense exercise, and especially when hypohydrated, mesenteric blood flow is reduced; this is believed to be one of the main contributors to the development of gastrointestinal symptoms. Reduced splanchnic perfusion could result in compromised gut permeability in athletes. However, although evidence exists that this might occur, this has not yet been definitively linked to the prevalence of gastrointestinal symptoms. Nutritional training and appropriate nutrition choices can reduce the risk of gastrointestinal discomfort during exercise by ensuring rapid gastric emptying and the absorption of water and nutrients, and by maintaining adequate perfusion of the splanchnic vasculature. A number of nutritional manipulations have been proposed to minimize gastrointestinal symptoms, including the use of multiple transportable carbohydrates, and potentially the use of nutrients that stimulate the production of nitric oxide in the intestine and thereby improve splanchnic perfusion. However, at this stage, evidence for beneficial effects of such interventions is lacking, and more research needs to be conducted to obtain a better understanding of the etiology of the problems and to improve the recommendations to athletes.

The bioavailability of amino adds from milk whey protein hydrolysates was evaluated using diffusion of the substances through semi-permeable membranes (dialyzability) and transport by Caco-2 cell cultures. The hydrolysates with low degree of hydrolysis (LDH) and high degree of hydrolysis (HDH) were obtained after 120 min of reaction time at 50 degrees C after the initial addition of pepsin, followed by the addition of trypsin, chymotrypsin and carboxypeptidase-A. The proteins and hydrolysates were further subjected to in vitro digestion with pepsin plus pancreatin. HPLC was used to determine the concentrations of dialyzable amino adds (48.4% of the non-hydrolyzed proteins, 63.2% of the LDH sample and 58.3% of the HDH sample), demonstrating the greater dialyzability of the hydrolysates. The LDH and HDH whey protein hydrolysates prepared with pepsin, trypsin, chymotrypsin and carboxypeptidase-A showed only 14.7% and 20.8% of dialyzable small peptides and amino acids, respectively. The efficiency of absorption was demonstrated by the preferential transport of Ile, Lou and Arg through a layer of cells. In the LDH hydrolysate, Tyr was also transported. Prior high- and low-degree hydrolysis of the whey provided transport by 5.7% and 6.6%, respectively, in comparison with 23% for non-hydrolyzed proteins, considering the total amount of these amino adds that was applied to the cells. Gastrointestinal (GI) problems are a common concern of athletes during intense exercise. Ultimately, these symptoms can impair performance and possibly prevent athletes from winning or even finishing a race. The main causes of GI problems during exercise are mechanical, ischemic and nutritional factors. Among the nutritional factors, a high intake of carbohydrate and hyperosmolar solutions increases GI problems. A number of nutritional manipulations have been proposed to minimize gastrointestinal symptoms, including the use of multiple transportable carbohydrates. This type of CHO intake increases the oxidation rates and can prevent the accumulation of carbohydrate in the intestine. Glucose (6%) or glucose plus fructose (8%-10%) beverages are recommended in order to increase CHO intake while avoiding the gastric emptying delay. Training the gut with high intake of CHO may increase absorption capacity and probably prevent GI distress. CHO mouth rinse may be a good strategy to enhance performance without using GI tract in exercises lasting less than an hour. Future strategies should be investigated comparing different CHO types, doses, and concentration in exercises with the same characteristics.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic illness with great potential to cause comorbidities resulting from cumulative inflammatory activities, and it contributes with the increase of disabilities and death of patients. It affects 1 to 2% of world population and usually occurs between 30 and 50 years of age. Among existing therapeutic options for the disease non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) still play an important part in the treatment, being widely used by patients to relieve pain and stiffness. However, this class of drugs causes many adverse gastrointestinal effects, such as dyspepsia, heartburn, nausea and vomit, and its use is one of the most common causes of peptic ulcers. Mangiferin (a glicosilated xanthone extracted mainly from the bark of Mangifera indica L.) is the main compound of an aqueous extract made from the bark stem of the mango tree. Previous studies conducted by our research group prove the anti-inflammatory action of mangiferin on an animal model of periodontitis, and its gastroprotective action has been described before. Considering these informations this study evaluated mangiferin’s potential on the treatment of RA and on gastric ulcer healing in animal models, and analyzed toxicity parameters to assure efficacy and safety of the compound as potential new drug for the treatment of the disease. RA was induced in rats by subcutaneous injection of bovine collagen and Freund’s complete adjuvant. This method presented low incidence of RA in rats, but we were able to induce the disease in 60 to 70% of the animals. Due to the wide use of NSAIDs and its potential to cause peptic ulcers, we induced gastric ulcer on arthritic rats to analyze mangiferin’s gastric healing effect. After 14 days of treatment we noticed small increase of the lesion area of animals treated with mangiferin or ibuprofen, when compared to the animals... Endoscopy of the gastrointestinal tract is a specialized minimally invasive diagnostic method and with both diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities. It is divided into two major groups, the rigid and flexible endoscopy. The first most widely used for visualization of body cavities that do not have a light, like the chest, for example, and the second for those with light as the gastrointestinal tract. In Brazil there are few professionals, veterinary hospitals or clinics that offer this type of service. Thus, endoscopy is an area of expertise of the veterinarian who is in huge expansion and has shown great applicability with excellent results in both clinical medicine and surgical small animals
