The aim of this work was to evaluate the effects of aluminum on the growth of Eucalyptus shoots cultivated in vitro through nutrient and total soluble protein content. The trial had a totally randomized design with four treatments and four replicates. The treatments were: 0.0; 0.25; 0.5 and 1.0 mM of AlCl 3.6H 2O. Shoots without roots of a Eucalyptus grandis x E urophylla clone were used for the in vitro culture. Evaluations were made on the 4th, 8th, 12th, 16th, 20th, 24th and 28th day of culture. The Al addition to the culture media reduced mainly Ca, P and K availability and absorptions by the shoots. The cellular metabolism was affected, conducted to morphological alterations in shoots (browning, mass calluses formation and shoots not friable), dry matter increased and a decreased in total protein soluble.

This paper is aiming to evaluate the effects of different levels of the aluminum on the growth of the Eucalyptus grandis x E. urophylla shoots cultivated in vitro. Evaluations were carried out on pH and chemicals modifications of the culture medium by Geochem program, polyamines contents (putrescine, espermidine e espermine) and acid phosphatase ativity on the shoots. The trial had a totally randomized design with four treatments and four replicates. The treatments were: 0.0, 6.75,13.50 and 27 mg.L -1 of AlCl 3.6H 2. Evaluations were carried out on the 4th, 8th, 12th, 16th, 20th, 24th and 28th day of culture. The addition of the aluminium, in all concentrations, affected the culture medium ionic equilibrium, the morphology of the shoots, reduced the pH on the medium, induced an increase in polyamines content and higher acid phosphatase activity.

The present work had as objective the study of clones of Eucalyptus grandis and E. grandis × E. urophylla under boron suppression on growth in height and diameter, development of symptoms of deficiency, boron content in leaf and polyols production. Plants were cultivated in pots with quartz in a greenhouse using two levels of boron per solution (0 and 0.5 mg L-1 of B). The 32 treatments followed a factorial scheme: 16 × 2 -16 clones and two doses of boron in a randomized block experimental design, with fve repetitions, totaling 160 plots. Plants were evaluated weekly for deficiency symptoms and monthly for height, stem diameter and leaf content of boron in different plant parts. The content of polyols was measured in two occasions: at 162 days and 192 days after starting the experiment. Decrease of growth and quick development of deficiency symptoms 40 days after boron suppression were observed, as well as a decrease of polyols synthesis. Foliar analysis, with boron supplement, resulted in the presence of mannitol and sorbitol in high enough concentration so that the evaluated plants could be considered rich in those polyols. Under boron suppression, boron levels in different portions of branches and stems of plants, as well as the presence of mannitol and sorbitol, indicated a conditional mobility of boron in Eucalyptus.

Photoacoustics as a tool for the diagnosis of radicular stress: Measurements in eucalyptus seedlings
Resumo:
In reforesting companies (cellulose industry), eucalyptus is usually cultivated in small plastic containers (50 mL). As seedlings remain for about 120 days in these containers-until transplantation-their roots become space restricted, with consequent limitations in water and nutrient absorption. These restrictions may lead to plant stress, decreasing productivity. In this work, we used the photoacoustic technique to evaluate the photosynthetic activity of Eucalyptus grandis, E. urophylla and E. urograndis seedlings subjected to this limited space availability, seeking a correlation with morphological parameters and fluorescence measurements in these seedlings. Photoacoustic, fluorescence, and morphological analysis were conducted every 15 days, from 45 to 120 days after sowing. Fluorescence and photosynthetic rate were evaluated in vivo and in situ, the latter one using the open photoacoustic technique. Data show that root dry matter diminished markedly at 90 and 120 days after sowing; this behavior showed a high correlation with the gas exchange component of the photoacoustic signal, as well as with the fluorescence ratio Fv/Fm. These results indicate that the soil volume of the container becomes insufficient for the roots after 90 days, probably leading to a nutritional deficiency in plants, which explains the decrease observed in the photosynthetic rate of seedlings. This work demonstrates the usefulness of the Open Photoacoustic Cell Technique to study the effects of irradiance and temperature on photosynthesis. bl vivo and ill situ photosynthetic induction measurements were performed in three different species of eucalyptus plants (E. grandis, E. urophylla, and E, urograndis) previously dark-adapted at different temperatures. Photosynthetic activity curves were built as a function of light intensity, indicating the occurrence of photosynthesis saturation. E. urograndis presented higher photosynthetic activity than the other species, especially at low temperature, indicating its tolerance to stress conditions. The incidence of background saturation light of various intensities allowed the irt situ study of photoinhibition in eucalyptus plants through open photoacoustics. (C) 2001 MAIK Nauka/Interperiodica.

Some Eucalyptus species are widely used as a plantation crop in tropical and subtropical regions. One reason for this is the diversity of end uses, but the main reason is the high level of wood production obtained from commercial plantings. With the advancement of biotechnology it will be possible to expand the geographical area in which eucalypts can be used as commercial plantation crops, especially in regions with current climatic restrictions. Despite the popularity of eucalypts and their increasing range, questions still exist, in both traditional planting areas and in the new regions: Can eucalypts invade areas of native vegetation, causing damage to natural ecosystems biodiversity? The objective of this study it was to assess whether eucalypts can invade native vegetation fragments in proximity to commercial stands, and what factors promote this invasive growth. Thus, three experiments were established in forest fragments located in three different regions of Brazil. Each experiment was composed of 40 plots (1 m(2) each one), 20 plots located at the border between the forest fragment and eucalypts plantation, and 20 plots in the interior of the forest fragments. In each experimental site, the plots were paired by two soil exposure conditions, 10 plots in natural conditions and 10 plots with soil exposure (no plant and no litter). During the rainy season, 2 g of eucalypts seeds were sown in each plot, including Eucalyptus grandis or a hybrid of E. urophylla x E. grandis, the most common commercial eucalypt species planted in the three region. At 15, 30, 45, 90, 180, 270 and 360 days after sowing, we assessed the number of seedlings of eucalypts and the number of seedlings of native species resulting from natural regeneration. Fifteen days after sowing, the greatest number of eucalypts seedlings (37 m(-2)) was observed in the plots with lower luminosity and exposed soil. Also, for native species, it was observed that exposed soil improved natural germination reaching the highest number of 163 seedlings per square meter. Site and soil exposure were the factors that have the greatest influence on seed germination of both eucalypt and native species. However, 270 days after sowing, eucalypt seedlings were not observed at any of the three experimental sites. The result shows the inability of eucalypts to adapt to condition outside of their natural range. However, native species demonstrated their strong capacity for natural regeneration in forest fragments under the same conditions where eucalypts were seeded. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V.
