In this work, the planning of secondary distribution circuits is approached as a mixed integer nonlinear programming problem (MINLP). In order to solve this problem, a dedicated evolutionary algorithm (EA) is proposed. This algorithm uses a codification scheme, genetic operators, and control parameters, projected and managed to consider the specific characteristics of the secondary network planning. The codification scheme maps the possible solutions that satisfy the requirements in order to obtain an effective and low-cost projected system-the conductors' adequate dimensioning, load balancing among phases, and the transformer placed at the center of the secondary system loads. An effective algorithm for three-phase power flow is used as an auxiliary methodology of the EA for the calculation of the fitness function proposed for solutions of each topology. Results for two secondary distribution circuits are presented, whereas one presents radial topology and the other a weakly meshed topology. © 2005 IEEE.

Here a multiobjective performance index for distribution systems with distributed generation based on a steady-state analysis of the network is proposed. This index quantifies the distributed generation impact on total losses, voltage profile and short circuit currents, and will be used as objective function in an evolutionary algorithm aimed at searching the best points for connecting distributed generators. Moreover, a loss allocation technique, based on the Zbus method, is applied on the original configuration of the network to obtain a good quality initial population. An IEEE medium voltage distribution network is analysed and results are presented and discussed.

The main objective of this work is to analyze the ability of FACTS devices like TCSC and UPFC to damp low frequency oscillations and a POD controller is also included. A comparative study of damping effect of those devices IS carried out. The Power Sensitivity Model (PSM) is used to the representation of the electric power system. Sensibility analysis using the residue method shows the best place for the installation of FACTS and the procedure to determine POD parameters. ©2008 IEEE.

In this paper we proposed a new two-parameters lifetime distribution with increasing failure rate. The new distribution arises on a latent complementary risk problem base. The properties of the proposed distribution are discussed, including a formal proof of its probability density function and explicit algebraic formulae for its reliability and failure rate functions, quantiles and moments, including the mean and variance. A simple EM-type algorithm for iteratively computing maximum likelihood estimates is presented. The Fisher information matrix is derived analytically in order to obtaining the asymptotic covariance matrix. The methodology is illustrated on a real data set. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyze the stress distribution on dentin/adhesive interface (d/a) through a 3-D finite element analysis (FEA) varying the number and diameter of the dentin tubules orifice according to dentin depth, keeping hybrid layer (HL) thickness and TAǴs length constant. Materials and Methods: 3 models were built through the SolidWorks software: SD - specimen simulating superficial dentin (41 x 41 x 82 μm), with a 3 μm thick HL, a 17 μm length Tag, and 8 tubules with a 0.9 μm diameter restored with composite resin. MD - similar to M1 with 12 tubules with a 1.2 μm diameter, simulating medium dentin. DD - similar to M1 with 16 tubules with a 2.5 μm diameter, simulating deep dentin. Other two models were built in order to keep the diameter constant in 2.5 μm: MS - similar to SD with 8 tubules; and MM - similar to MD with 12 tubules. The boundary condition was applied to the base surface of each specimen. Tensile load (0.03N) was performed on the composite resin top surface. Stress field (maximum principal stress in tension - σMAX) was performed using Ansys Wokbench 10.0. Results: The peak of σMAX (MPa) were similar between SD (110) and MD (106), and higher for DD (134). The stress distribution pathway was similar for all models, starting from peritubular dentin to adhesive layer, intertubular dentin and hybrid layer. The peak of σMAX (MPa) for those structures was, respectively: 134 (DD), 56.9 (SD), 45.5 (DD), and 36.7 (MD). Conclusions: The number of dentin tubules had no influence in the σMAX at the dentin/adhesive interface. Peritubular and intertubular dentin showed higher stress with the bigger dentin tubules orifice condition. The σMAX in the hybrid layer and adhesive layer were going down from superficial dentin to deeper dentin. In a failure scenario, the hybrid layer in contact with peritubular dentin and adhesive layer is the first region for breaking the adhesion. © 2011 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.

This paper presents an efficient tabu search algorithm (TSA) to solve the problem of feeder reconfiguration of distribution systems. The main characteristics that make the proposed TSA particularly efficient are a) the way in which the neighborhood of the current solution was defined; b) the way in which the objective function value was estimated; and c) the reduction of the neighborhood using heuristic criteria. Four electrical systems, described in detail in the specialized literature, were used to test the proposed TSA. The result demonstrate that it is computationally very fast and finds the best solutions known in the specialized literature. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper presents a mixed-integer linear programming approach to solving the problem of optimal type, size and allocation of distributed generators (DGs) in radial distribution systems. In the proposed formulation, (a) the steady-state operation of the radial distribution system, considering different load levels, is modeled through linear expressions; (b) different types of DGs are represented by their capability curves; (c) the short-circuit current capacity of the circuits is modeled through linear expressions; and (d) different topologies of the radial distribution system are considered. The objective function minimizes the annualized investment and operation costs. The use of a mixed-integer linear formulation guarantees convergence to optimality using existing optimization software. The results of one test system are presented in order to show the accuracy as well as the efficiency of the proposed solution technique.© 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A theoretical approach aiming at the prediction of segregation of dopant atoms on nanocrystalline systems is discussed here. It considers the free energy minimization argument in order to provide the most likely dopant distribution as a function of the total doping level. For this, it requires as input (i) a fixed polyhedral geometry with defined facets, and (ii) a set of functions that describe the surface energy as a function of dopant content for different crystallographic planes. Two Sb-doped SnO2 nanocrystalline systems with different morphology and dopant content were selected as a case study, and the calculation of the dopant distributions expected for them is presented in detail. The obtained results were compared to previously reported characterization of this system by a combination of HRTEM and surface energy calculations, and both methods are shown to be equivalent. Considering its application pre-requisites, the present theoretical approach can provide a first estimation of doping atom distribution for a wide range of nanocrystalline systems. We expect that its use will support the reduction of experimental effort for the characterization of doped nanocrystals, and also provide a solution to the characterization of systems where even state-of-art analytical techniques are limited.
