Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the anticaries effect of low-fluoride toothpastes combined with hexametaphosphate (HMP) on enamel demineralization. Methods: Bovine enamel blocks were subjected to pH cycling and treatment with toothpaste's slurries (15 groups; 2x/day). Toothpaste mixtures contained the following: no fluoride (F) plus HMP (from 0 to 3.0%); 250 ppm F plus HMP (from 0 to 3.0%); 500 ppm F; 1100 ppm F; and a commercial toothpaste (1100 ppm F). After pH cycling, surface and cross-sectional hardness, as well as F present in the enamel were determined. The demineralization depth was analyzed using polarized light microscopy. The variables were subjected to 1-way ANOVA, followed by Student-Newman-Keuls' test (p < 0.05).Results: In the absence of fluoride, 0.5% HMP promoted the lowest mineral loss and its effect was similar to that of a 250 ppm F toothpaste (p > 0.05). The combination of 0.5% HMP and 250 ppm F resulted in lower mineral loss (p < 0.05) and similar lesion depth when compared to the 1100 ppm F toothpaste (p > 0.05).Conclusion: To conclude, the combination of 0.5% HMP and 250 ppm fluoride in a toothpaste has a similar inhibitory effect on enamel demineralization in vitro when compared to a toothpaste containing 1100 ppm F.Clinical significance: The anticaries effect of toothpaste containing 250 ppm F combined with 0.5% HMP was similar to that of a 1100 ppm F toothpaste, despite the 4-fold difference in F concentration. Although such effects still need to be demonstrated in clinical studies, it may be a viable alternative for preschool children. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Objective: To evaluate the impact of the type of root canal preparation, intraradicular post and mechanical cycling on the fracture strength of roots. Material and Methods: Eighty human single rooted teeth were divided into 8 groups according to the instruments used for root canal preparation (manual or rotary instruments), the type of intraradicular post (fiber posts-FRC and cast post and core-CPC) and the use of mechanical cycling (MC) as follows: Manual and FRC; Manual, FRC and MC; Manual and CPC; Manual, CPC and MC; Rotary and FRC; Rotary, FRC and MC; Rotary and CPC; Rotary, CPC and MC. The filling was performed by lateral compactation. All root canals were prepared for a post with a 10 mm length, using the custom # 2 bur of the glass fiber post system. For mechanical cycling, the protocol was applied as follows: an angle of incidence of 45 degrees, 37 degrees C, 88 N, 4 Hz, 2 million pulses. All groups were submitted to fracture strength test in a 45 degrees device with 1 mm/min cross-head speed until failure occurred. Results: The 3-way ANOVA showed that the root canal preparation strategy (p<0.03) and post type (p<0.0001) affected the fracture strength results, while mechanical cycling (p=0.29) did not. Conclusion: The root canal preparation strategy only influenced the root fracture strength when restoring with a fiber post and mechanical cycling, so it does not seem to be an important factor in this scenario.

Purpose: This study evaluated the effect of different surface conditioning protocols on the repair strength of resin composite to the zirconia core / veneering ceramic complex, simulating the clinical chipping phenomenon.Materials and Methods: Forty disk-shaped zirconia core (Lava Zirconia, 3M ESPE) (diameter: 3 mm) specimens were veneered circumferentially with a feldspathic veneering ceramic (VM7, Vita Zahnfabrik) (thickness: 2 mm) using a split metal mold. They were then embedded in autopolymerizing acrylic with the bonding surfaces exposed. Specimens were randomly assigned to one of the following surface conditioning protocols (n = 10 per group): group 1, veneer: 4% hydrofluoric acid (HF) (Porcelain Etch) + core: aluminum trioxide (50-mu m Al2O3) + core + veneer: silane (ESPE-Sil); group 2: core: Al2O3 (50 mu m) + veneer: HF + core + veneer: silane; group 3: veneer: HF + core: 30 mu m aluminum trioxide particles coated with silica (30 mu m SiO2) + core + veneer: silane; group 4: core: 30 mu m SiO2 + veneer: HF + core + veneer: silane. Core and veneer ceramic were conditioned individually but no attempt was made to avoid cross contamination of conditioning, simulating the clinical intraoral repair situation. Adhesive resin (VisioBond) was applied to both the core and the veneer ceramic, and resin composite (Quadrant Posterior) was bonded onto both substrates using polyethylene molds and photopolymerized. After thermocycling (6000 cycles, 5 degrees C-55 degrees C), the specimens were subjected to shear bond testing using a universal testing machine (1 mm/min). Failure modes were identified using an optical microscope, and scanning electron microscope images were obtained. Bond strength data (MPa) were analyzed statistically using the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test followed by the Wilcoxon rank-sum test and the Bonferroni Holm correction (alpha = 0.05).Results: Group 3 demonstrated significantly higher values (MPa) (8.6 +/- 2.7) than those of the other groups (3.2 +/- 3.1, 3.2 +/- 3, and 3.1 +/- 3.5 for groups 1, 2, and 4, respectively) (p < 0.001). All groups showed exclusively adhesive failure between the repair resin and the core zirconia. The incidence of cohesive failure in the ceramic was highest in group 3 (8 out of 10) compared to the other groups (0/10, 2/10, and 2/10, in groups 1, 2, and 4, respectively). SEM images showed that air abrasion on the zirconia core only also impinged on the veneering ceramic where the etching pattern was affected. Conclusion: Etching the veneer ceramic with HF gel and silica coating of the zirconia core followed by silanization of both substrates could be advised for the repair of the zirconia core / veneering ceramic complex.

Individuals with facial paralysis of 6 months or more without evidence of clinical or electromyographic improvement have been successfully reanimated utilizing an orthodromic temporalis transfer in conjunction with end-to-side cross-face nerve grafts. The temporalis muscle insertion is released from the coronoid process of the mandible and sutured to a fascia lata graft that is secured distally to the commissure and paralyzed hemilip. The orthodromic transfer of the temporalis muscle overcomes the concave temporal deformity and zygomatic fullness produced by the turning down of the central third of the muscle (Gillies procedure) while yielding stronger muscle contraction and a more symmetric smile. The muscle flap is combined with cross-face sural nerve grafts utilizing end-to-side neurorrhaphies to import myelinated motor fibers to the paralyzed muscles of facial expression in the midface and perioral region. Cross-face nerve grafting provides the potential for true spontaneous facial motion. We feel that the synergy created by the combination of techniques can perhaps produce a more symmetrical and synchronized smile than either procedure in isolation.Nineteen patients underwent an orthodromic temporalis muscle flap in conjunction with cross-face (buccal-buccal with end-to-side neurorrhaphy) nerve grafts. To evaluate the symmetry of the smile, we measured the length of the two hemilips (normal and affected) using the CorelDRAW X3 software. Measurements were obtained in the pre- and postoperative period and compared for symmetry. There was significant improvement in smile symmetry in 89.5 % of patients.Orthodromic temporalis muscle transfer in conjunction with cross face nerve grafts creates a synergistic effect frequently producing an aesthetic, symmetric smile. This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. Contents The objective of the present research was to evaluate the effect of a calf's genetic group on the productive and reproductive efficiency of its Nellore dam. Fixed-time artificial insemination was applied to 800 cows using semen extracted from Nellore, Simmental and Angus Red bulls. Four hundred eleven cows calved, producing 119 Nellore, 103 1/2Simmental-1/2Nellore and 189 1/2Nellore-1/2Angus Red calves. The second mating period, which paired Nellore cows with Simmental bulls, was initiated 10days after parturitions began and lasted for 5months. Based on the two successive parturitions, the cumulative parturition rate for calving periods of 3, 4 and 5months was calculated. Although no significant difference was observed for birth weight among the genetic groups, cross-bred calves weighed, on average, 10% more than did pure-bred calves at the age of 205days. Nellore dams experienced a gestation period that was 7days longer than did the cross-bred dams, and the former showed a higher parturition rate at 90 and 120days of the calving season, but not at 150days (calving rates of 80.6, 76.4 and 76.2% for mothers of Nellore, 1/2Nellore-1/2Angus Red and 1/2Nellore-1/2Simmental, respectively, p>0.05). At 90 and 120days, Nellore dams produced more kg of calf per mated dam. In conclusion, in a short breeding season, Nellore dams nursing pure-bred Nellore calves were found to have a higher biological efficiency compared with Nellore dams nursing cross-bred calves.

A time reversal symmetric regularized electron exchange model was used to elastic scattering, target elastic Ps excitations and target inelastic excitation of hydrogen in a five state coupled model. A singlet Ps-H-S-wave resonance at 4.01 eV of width 0.15 eV and a P-wave resonance at 5.08 eV of width 0.004 eV were obtained using this model. The effect on the convergence of the coupled-channel scheme due to the inclusion of the excited Ps and H states was also analyzed.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of conventional toothpastes (1100 ppm F) supplemented with sodium trimetaphosphate (TMP) in demineralization. Blocks of enamel were selected and then divided into seven experimental groups of 12: toothpaste without F and TMP (placebo), toothpaste with 1100 ppm F (1100), and toothpaste with 1100 ppm F supplemented with TMP-1 % (1100 1 % TMP), 3 % (1100 3 % TMP), 4.5 % (1100 4.5 % TMP), 6 % (1100 6 % TMP), and 9 % (1100 9 % TMP). Blocks were subjected to five pH cycles (demineralizing/remineralizing solutions) at 37 °C and treated with toothpaste slurries twice daily, after which the blocks were maintained for 2 days in fresh remineralizing solution. Following treatments, surface hardness (SHf) and cross-sectional hardness were determined for calculating the integrated loss of subsurface hardness (ΔKHN). The fluoride present in the enamel was also measured. The SHf and ΔKHN measurements showed that supplementation with 3 % TMP was the most effective (p < 0.001) and showed greater concentration of F in the enamel (p < 0.001). Addition of 3 % TMP to a conventional toothpaste (1100 ppm F) showed greater efficacy in reducing enamel demineralization. Fluoride toothpastes containing trimetaphosphate possess good anticaries potential required to reduce the prevalence of dental caries in high-risk patients.
