This study will focus on one part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), acupuncture - utilized as therapy method for pathologies treatment in humans and animals - , as well as its main techniques. Acupuncture is one branch of TCM, originated from theoretical and empirical knowledge accumulated by popular medicine. Currently, researches performed in humans and animals have shown the effectiveness of this method as an assistance or alternative in illnesses treatment. Besides that, professionals are not merely looking for orthodox medicine knowledge, but also specializations and improvement over the complementary therapies area. There are diverse studies and researches which were and are being done in veterinary, relating the effectiveness of acupuncture in small and large animals. In comparison, in the wild animals’ area the numbers of studies is smaller. However, it is expected that this number increases over the fact that some of these animals’ species are entering the pet market and also because of the possibility of using these methods for treatment and prevention of diseases on zoo animals or other animals kept in captivity

Currently zoos and management centers are valuable tools in the maintenance and study of various species. Studies of behavior of captive animals contribute to the improvement of management techniques and the well - being of themselves, encouraging captive breeding and reintroduction also to the natural environment . One of the ways to increase the levels of well-being is the use of environmental enrichment techniques that provide necessary incentives for the welfare of both physical and psychological captive animal . The aim of this study was to identify the types, frequencies and intensities of behavior displayed by three individuals of the species Galictis cuja, belonging to the family Mustelidae and popularly known as lesser grisson , which are captives in municipal zoo in Piracicaba , SP . In addition to evaluating the influence of environmental enrichment techniques on these behavioral parameters. The animals had their behaviors recorded in ethograms through the focal sampling method , 40 hours per person , totaling 120 hours of observation . Were introduced four environmental enrichment techniques related to physical environment, nutrition , perception and cognitive stimulation . At the end, the results of observations before and after the introduction of enrichment techniques were compared and it was possible to observe significant changes in behavior such as run , walk and scratching . The animals were more active and spent longer visible during the day, the enrichment also increased the frequency of social behaviors and the end of the work occurred even attempted copulation , thus showing that the enrichment exerted a positive influence on the behavioral patterns of lesser grisson (Galictis cuja)

Six species of the genus Callithrix can be found across the Atlantic Forest extension, being the Callithrix geoffroyi, Geoffroy`s marmoset, the least studied species. The objective of this study is to investigate the behavioral aspects of the species in captivity, and how the environmental enrichment techniques influence those behaviors. To this end, we have studied three specimens of C. geoffroyi, in captivity at Municipal Zoo of Piracicaba, São Paulo. The enclosure includes a 37m2 with under masonry, concrete platforms with external deep, trunks, a floor of grass and soil, e grid in their other three sides. The sampling method was focal per time interval, with records every 30 seconds in sessions of 30 minutes, totaling 30 hours for each animal, which were distributed in a baseline phase, an environmental enrichment phase and post-enrichment phase (n = 3660 records in each phase). The twelve enrichment techniques were applied: the physical environment (branches for perches and hoses fabrics for bedding and vanishing points), cognitive (radio, mirror, puzzle food) and food (insects, flowers and eggs hidden, wrapped). Initially, to determine the period of greatest activity of marmosets, we investigated the pattern of activity for three days (9:00 am to 17:00 pm) consecutively at intervals of 15 minutes, recording the number of active and inactive individuals. The 495 records signaled greater activity in the morning, then selected period for the completion of this work. The ethogram comprised 16 behaviors. The inactivity was the predominant phase behavior baseline and post-enrichment with a significant decrease (h=8,62, p <0.01) in the enrichment phase, and a significant increase in the post enrichment (h=18,15, p <0.001). Tendo em vista as inúmeras possibilidades de utilização dos recursos tecnológicos, como computadores, internet e jogos eletrônicos, em todos os contextos da vida humana, o campo de educação não pode ficar alheio às vantagens desses recuros. Entretanto, esta inserção de jogos eletrônicos como estratégias no contexto da educação, seja no âmbito formal, quanto no informal ainda precisa vencer algumas barreiras. Torna-se importante que os educadores busquem aliar esses dispositivos e jogos ao ensino, com o intuito de atender às demandas e expectativas crescentes sobre o uso cada vez mais constante desses recursos em todos os âmbitos da sociedade. Assim, este estudo teve por objetivo analisar o uso do jogo eletrônico não-didático e de entretenimento Zoo Tycoon® 2 para o ensino de Ciências e Biologia, observando-se a autenticidade dos conteúdos de Ciências e Biologia presentes no mesmo e, também, a forma como esse conteúdo é apresentado aos usuários. Para tanto, foi realizado um levantamento bibliográfico acerca do significado do ensino formal, não-formal e informal e a inserção do jogo Zoo Tycoon® 2 no contexto da aprendizagem, no que tange ao ensino de Ciências e Biologia. Os dados obtidos foram analisados com base na técnica de análise de conteúdo temático e classificados em três categorias, de acordo com o modo que aparecem no jogo, tal como interagem com o jogador. As categorias de classificação foram referentes aos conteúdos Meramente Ilustrativos (MI), Simplesmente Informativos (SI) e Educativos (E), estando cada uma relacionada, gradativamente, com o maior conteúdo de informações e a maior interação do jogador para com as informações, representando um acesso mais fácil e direto ao conteúdo. Os resultados apontam que este jogo transmite, efetivamente, conteúdos educativos, e também funciona como uma ferramenta despertadora e embasadora, isto é, ele estimula a busca por conhecimento e dá base...

This paper describes the in vivo Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL)technique by endoscopy in tapirs (Tapirus terrestris) with clinicalsigns of tuberculosis. The technique was performed in two tapirs, male and female,from Curitiba Zoo, Paraná, Brazil. A flexible endoscope and a polyethylene catheterwere used after the chemical restraint of the animals. For BAL technique, 60mL ofsaline 0.9% were infused with a polyethylene catheter, introduced by the endoscope'working channel, and 15mL of BAL were recovered, analyzed and submitted tocytocentrifugation. Slides were stained by Papanicolaou, periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)and Ziehl-Neelsen methods contained high quantity of inflammatory cells on lightmicroscopy (macrophages 27.5%, lymphocytes 0.5%, neutrophis 67% and eosinophis 5%).BAL samples were submitted to culture, bacilloscopy and PCR and were negative forboth animals. Based on this study, it was concluded that the bronchoalveolar lavagetechnique in tapirs is feasible, simple, noninvasive, practical and fast, providingan important clinical information in vivo regarding the functionalstatus of the lower respiratory tract.
