Inhibitory mechanisms in the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBN) and central GABAergic mechanisms are involved in the regulation of water and NaCl intake. Besides increasing fluid depletion-induced sodium intake, the activation of GABA(A) receptors with muscimol into the LPBN also induces ingestion of 0.3 M NaCl in normonatremic, euhydrated rats. It has been suggested that inhibitory mechanisms activated by osmotic signals are blocked by GABAA receptor activation in the LPBN, thereby increasing hypertonic NaCl intake. Therefore, in the present study we investigated the effects of muscimol injected into the LPBN on water and 0.3 M NaCl intake in hyperosmotic cell-dehydrated rats (rats treated with an intragastric load of 2 M NaCl). Male Wistar rats with stainless steel cannulas implanted bilaterally into the LPBN were used. In euhydrated rats, muscimol (0.5 nmol/0.2 mu l), bilaterally injected into the LPBN, induced ingestion of 0.3 M NaCl (24.6 +/- 7.9 vs. vehicle: 0.5 +/- 0.3 ml/180 min) and water (6.3 +/- 2.1 vs. vehicle: 0.5 +/- 0.3 ml/180 min). One hour after intragastric 2 M NaCl load (2 ml), bilateral injections of muscimol into the LPBN also induced 0.3 M NaCl intake (22.1 +/- 5.2 vs. vehicle: 0.9 +/- 0.8 ml/210 min) and water intake (16.5 +/- 3.6 vs. vehicle: 7.8 +/- 1.8 ml/210 min). The GABAA antagonist bicuculline (0.4 nmol/0.2 mu l) into the LPBN reduced the effect of muscimol on 0.3 M NaCl intake (7.1 +/- 2.1 ml/210 min). Therefore, the activation of GABAA receptors in the LPBN induces ingestion of 0.3 M NaCl by hyperosmotic cell-dehydrated rats, suggesting that plasma levels of renin or osmolarity do not affect sodium intake after the blockade of LPBN inhibitory mechanisms with muscimol. This study evaluated periapical tissue healing and orthodontic root resorption of endodontically treated teeth sealed with calcium hydroxide in dogs. The sample consisted of three contralateral pairs of maxillary incisors and two contralateral pairs of mandibular incisors in each of two dogs using a split mouth design. After biomechanical preparation of the teeth in the first group (n = 10), a Ca(OH)(2) dressing was placed for 14 days before root canal filling with Ca(OH)(2)-based sealer (Sealapex) and gutta-percha points. In the second group (n = 10), root canals were obturated immediately after the mechanical preparation with gutta-percha points and zinc oxide and eugenol (ZOE)-based sealer (Endofill). After completion of endodontic treatment, the teeth were moved with an orthodontic appliance with a calibrated force of 200 g, reactivated every 21 days. After 105 days, the animals were killed and the teeth were removed upon completion of active treatment, without a period of recovery, and prepared for histomorphological analysis. All sections of each tooth were graded subjectively on a scale from one to four to obtain the average of the 16 histomorphological parameters analysed. Evaluation of the differences between the two treatment protocols was made with Mann-Whitney U-test. It was observed that the teeth treated with Ca(OH)(2)-based materials provided better outcomes (P = 5%), with complete repair of all root resorption areas, high rate of biological closure of the main canal and apical accessory canals by newly formed cementum, less intense and extensive chronic inflammatory infiltrate, and better organization of the periodontal ligament. Under the tested conditions, Ca(OH)(2)-based materials had a favourable action on periapical tissue healing and repair of orthodontic root resorption in endodontically treated dogs' teeth.

Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) has been shown to have several biological effects that favor the healing process, and nicotine has been shown to delay the healing process. In this study we investigated the healing of open wounds created on the back of rats treated with nicotine with or without LLLT. of 115 animals, 59 received subcutaneous injections of saline solution, and the others received subcutaneous injections of nicotine (3 mg/kg body weight), twice a day throughout the study period. After 30 days, skin wounds were created on the back of the animals. The animals receiving saline injections were divided into two groups: group 1 (G1, n = 29), in which the wounds were left untreated, and group 2 (G2, n = 30), in which the wounds were treated with LLLT (GaAlAs, 660 nm, 30 mW, 5.57 J/cm(2) per point, 0.39 J, 13 s per point, 0.42 W/cm(2)). The animals receiving nicotine injections were also divided into two groups: group 3 (G3, n = 29), in which the wounds were left untreated, and group 4 (G4, n = 27), in which the wounds were treated with LLLT. The animals were killed 3, 7 or 14 days after surgery. Wound healing was evaluated histologically both qualitatively and semiquantitatively. Wounds of G2 showed a delay in epithelial migration and connective tissue organization compared to those of G1. Wounds of G2 showed faster healing than those of G1; similarly, wounds of G4 showed more advanced healing than those of G3. LLLT acted as a biostimulatory coadjuvant agent balancing the undesirable effects of nicotine on wound tissue healing.

Objective. The objective of this study was to histologically analyze the influence of the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on bone healing in surgically created critical-size defects (CSD) in the calvaria of diabetic rats.Study design. A total of 20 diabetic rats were divided into 2 groups: C (control) and PRP. A 5-mm diameter CSD was created in the calvarium of each animal. In Group C, the defect was filled by blood clot only. In Group PRP, 0.35 mL of PRP was placed in the defects. All animals were humanely killed 30 days postoperatively. Histometric and histologic analyses were performed. Data were statistically analyzed (t test, P < .05).Results. No defect completely regenerated with bone. Group PRP had a statistically greater amount of bone formation than Group C (37.22% +/- 6.00% and 21.68% +/- 11.35%, respectively).Conclusion. PRP placed in the defects significantly enhanced bone healing in CSD in the calvaria of diabetic rats both qualitatively and quantitatively. The objective of the current study was to assess histo-morphometrically the healing process of recession defects associated with scraped roots treated with subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG). Six dogs were used. Bone dehiscence defects (6 x 8 mm) and root planing were carried out on maxillary canine teeth. Following a split-mouth model, according to the treatment, left canines (control) were covered with coronally positioned flap (CPF). Right canines were submitted to treatments with SCTG. After a 3-month postoperative period, the animals were killed, and the blocks processed for the histomorphometric assessment. Data assessment demonstrated that the CPF group showed parameters of a new connective tissue attachment, length of new cement (NC), length of new bone (mean +/- SD: 0.95 +/- 0.53, 2.44 +/- 1.97, and 1.96 +/- 2.29 mm, respectively), which were higher than those of SCTG group (mean +/- SD: 0.71 +/- 0.36, 2.21 +/- 1.28, and 1.52 +/- 1.31 mm, respectively), although not significantly (P > 0.05). The length of both epithelial tissue and connective tissue apposition in the SCTG group (mean +/- SD: 1.70 +/- 0.53 and 2.62 +/- 1.52 mm, respectively) were higher than those of the CPF group (mean +/- SD: 1.18 +/- 0.49 and 2.03 +/- 1.03 mm, respectively), although showing no significant differences (P > 0.05). Within the limits of the current study, it was possible to conclude that there were no significant differences between the groups according to the histologic parameters assessed.

This study assessed the occurrence and characteristics of oral and maxillofacial infections in patients treated at a Brazilian oral and maxillofacial emergency service during a 7-year period. The clinical files of all patients treated at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Traumatology Service of the Aracatuba Dental School, São Paulo State University, Brazil, between 2002 and 2008 were reviewed. From a population of 3645 patients treated in this period, the study sample consisted of 93 subjects who presented odontogenic infections. Data referring to the patients' sex, age, medical history, and the etiology, diagnosis, complications, drug therapy/treatment, and evolution of the pathologic diseases were collected and analyzed using the Epi Info 2000 software. of these patients, 54 were men (58.1%) and 39 were women (41.9%). Most patients were in the 31- to 40-year-old (20.7%) and 21- to 30-year-old (19.6%) age groups. The most frequent etiology was pulp necrosis due to caries (80.6%). Regarding the treatment, antibiotics were administered to all patients, surgical drainage was done in 75 patients (82.4%), and 44 patients (47.3%) needed hospital admission. First-generation cephalosporin alone or combined with other drugs was the most prescribed antibiotic (n = 26) followed by penicillin G (n = 25). Most patients (n = 85, 91.4%) responded well to the treatment. Five cases had complications: 3 patients needed hospital readmission, 1 case progressed to descending mediastinitis, and 1 patient died. Odontogenic infections can be life-threatening and require hospital admission for adequate patient care. Complications from odontogenic infections, although rare, may be fatal if not properly managed.

Dental trauma has been considered as a public health problem that affects mainly children and youngsters and due to its impact on the patient's quality of life. This study presents the results of a 6-year survey of the occurrence and characteristics of dental trauma in patients admitted to the Service of Surgery and Oral and Maxillofacial Traumatology of the School of Dentistry of Aracatuba (UNESP, Brazil) after emergency care in hospital facilities in the region of Aracatuba, SP, Brazil. For such purpose, the clinical files of patients treated at the Service between 1999 and 2005 were reviewed. Information regarding gender, age, number of traumatized teeth, etiology and diagnosis of the trauma was collected from the files of patients with tooth injuries and recorded in case report forms specifically designed for this purpose. The results showed that from a total of 4112 patients admitted to the Service within the surveyed period, 266 (6.5%) had tooth injuries (172 males - 64.7%; 94 females - 35.3%). The total number of traumatized teeth was 496. Most patients belonged to the 16-20 year-old age group (20.3%) and the most frequent causes of tooth injuries were bicycle accidents (28.6%), motorcycle accidents (19.2%) and falls (18.8%). Injuries to the periodontal tissues were the most frequent type of tooth injuries (408 teeth; 82.26%), occurring in 118 primary and 290 permanent teeth. Among the injuries to the periodontal tissues, avulsion was the most common (32.86%) (29.41% for primary and 34.0% for permanent teeth), followed by extrusive luxation (19.15%) (25.21% for primary and 17.24% for permanent teeth). In conclusion, in the surveyed population, cases of tooth injuries were more frequent in males aged 16-20 years old due to cyclist accidents with predominance of injuries to the periodontal tissues, in particular, avulsions.

Objectives: The aim of the present investigation was to histologically analyze the effect of using lyophilized bovine bone (GenOx (R) organic matrix) with (or without) guided tissue regeneration (using a decalcified cortical osseous membrane [GenDerm (R)]) on bone healing in surgically created critical-size defects created in rat tibia.Material and methods: Surgical critical-size bone defects were created in 64 animals that were randomly divided into four groups: group I (control); group II (defect filled with GenOx (R)); group III (defect covered by GenDerm (R)); group IV (defect filled with GenOx (R) and covered by GenDerm (R)). Animals were killed at 30 or 90 days post-surgery. The specimens were embedded in paraffin, serially cut, and stained with hematoxylin and eosin for analysis under light microscopy. The formation of new bone in the cortical area of the defect was histomorphometrically evaluated. Results: All experimental groups demonstrated superior bone healing compared with the control group. However, group IV samples showed evidence of more advanced healing at both 30 and 90 days post-surgery as compared with the other experimental groups. Conclusions: The bovine organic bone graft GenOx (R) associated with GenDerm (R) this produced the best treatment results in the case of critical-size defects in rat tibia.

Fractures of the mandibular angle deserve particular attention because they represent the highest percentage of mandibular fractures and have the highest postsurgical complication rate, making them the most challenging and unpredictable mandibular fractures to treat. Despite the evolution in the treatment of maxillofacial trauma and fixation methods, no single treatment modality has been revealed to be ideal for mandibular angle fractures. Several methods of internal fixation have been studied with great variation in complications rates, especially postoperative infections. Recently, new studies have shown reduction of postsurgical complications rates using three-dimensional plates to treat mandibular angle fractures. Nevertheless, only few surgeons have used this type of plate for the treatment of mandibular angle fractures. The aim of this clinical report was to describe a case of a patient with a mandibular angle fracture treated by an intraoral approach and a three-dimensional rectangular grid miniplate with 4 holes, which was stabilized with monocortical screws. The authors show a follow-up of 8 months, without infection and with occlusal stability.
