The composite montmorillonite-8-hydroxyquinoline (Swy-1-8-HQ) was prepared by two different processes and studied by using thermogravimetric analysis (TG/DTG and DSC), as well as helpful techniques as fluorescence in the UV-visible region and X-ray diffraction. The composites developed fluorescent appearance, however with quantum poor efficiency and they exhibited distinct TG and DSC thermal behavior. The fluorescence data of spectra associated to the TG/DT curves allowed to suggest that the 8-HQ was present in the composites in two different circumstances: 1 - intercalated in the interlayer spaces (Swy-1-8-HQ2), rigidly associated to the Substrate feasible as a monolayer with the aromatic rings parallel to the silica layer; and/or, 2 - adsorbed on the Surface (Swy-1-8-HQ1), either as a bilayer formation or tilting of the molecules to the silicate layer sheet. All results confirmed above are in agreement with X-ray diffraction patterns, once the interlayer space increases when 8-HQ is incorporated. The experimental results confirm the formation of the composites in agreement with the method used in the preparation.

Statement of problem. It is not clear how different glass ceramic surface pretreatments influence the bonding capacity of various luting agents to these surfaces.Purpose. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the microtensile bond strength (mu TBS) of 3 resin cements to a lithia disilicate-based ceramic submitted to 2 surface conditioning treatments.Material and methods. Eighteen 5 X 6 X 8-mm ceramic (IPS Empress 2) blocks were fabricated according to manufacturer's instructions and duplicated in composite resin (Tetric Ceram). Ceramic blocks were polished and divided into 2 groups (n=9/treatment): no conditioning (no-conditioning/control), or 5% hydrofluoric acid etching for 20 seconds and silanization for 1 minute (HF + SIL). Ceramic blocks were cemented to the composite resin blocks with I self-adhesive universal resin cement (RelyX Unicem) or 1 of 2 resin-based luting agents (Multilink or Panavia F), according to the manufacturer's instructions. The composite resin-ceramic blocks were stored in humidity at 37 degrees C for 7 days and serially sectioned to produce 25 beam specimens per group with a 1.0-mm(2) cross-sectional area. Specimens were thermal cycled (5000 cycles, 5 degrees C-55 degrees C) and tested in tension at 1 mm/min. Microtensile bond strength data (MPa) were analyzed by 2-way analysis of variance and Tukey multiple comparisons tests (alpha=.05). Fractured specimens were examined with a stereomicroscope (X40) and classified as adhesive, mixed, or cohesive.Results. The surface conditioning factor was significant (HF+SIL > no-conditioning) (P<.0001). Considering the unconditioned groups, the mu TBS of RelyX Unicem was significantly higher (9.6 +/- 1.9) than that of Multilink (6.2 +/- 1.2) and Panavia F (7.4 +/- 1.9). Previous etching and silanization yielded statistically higher mu TBS values for RelyX Unicem (18.8 +/- 3.5) and Multilink (17.4 +/- 3.0) when compared to Panavia F (15.7 +/- 3.8). Spontaneous debonding after thermal cycling was detected when luting agents were applied to untreated ceramic surfaces.Conclusion. Etching and silanization treatments appear to be crucial for resin bonding to a lithia disilicate-based ceramic, regardless of the resin cement used.

Thermogravimetry (TG), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and other analytical techniques were used to study the reactions of mercury with Pt-30% Ir alloy. The results allowed to suggest that an electrodeposited mercury film interacts with the substrate and when subjected to heat or electrochemical removal at least four mass loss steps or five peaks appeared during the mercury desorption process. The first two steps were attributed to Hg(0) removal probably from the bulk and from the adsorbed monolayer which wets the electrode surface. These two processes are responsible for peaks D and F in the cyclic voltammograms. The last two peaks (G, H) in CV were ascribed to the intermetallic compound decomposition. In TG curves, the last two steps were attributed to the PtHg4 (third step), and PtHg2 decomposition followed by Hg removal from the subsurface. The PtHg2 was formed by an eutectoide reaction: PtHg -> PtHg2+Hg(Pt-Ir). The Hg diffused to the subsurface was not detectable by cyclic voltammetry.

Undoped and Eu3+ doped monohydrate strontium oxalate samples were precipitated under ultrasound and conventional stirring and were heated at different temperatures. All samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XDR), infrared spectra (IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Monohydrate, dehydrate oxalates and carbonate particles are ellipsoids indicating a topotatic process. Particle size decrease is observed when ultrasound stirring and europium. doping are used and rehydration of strontium oxalate results in uniform hexagonal particle shape. An oxide and carbonate mixture is obtained from oxalates treated at 1050 degreesC and its suspension in water undergoes incomplete hydrolysis. The products from this incomplete hydrolysis present dendrite shape particles only when the former is precipitated under ultrasound stirring. In this process, surface energy is important for particle dispersion and ultrasound supplies activation energy to oxalate precursor. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

We have studied the thermal decomposition of the microcrystalline cellulose and some of its derivative such as pure carboxymethylcellulose (CMCH), phosphate cellulose (FOSCEL) and oxycellulose (OXICEL) and also these same derivatives containing adsorbed cadmium cations. We have used the TG,DTG tecniques in order to determine the quantity of retained cadmium II cations on the surface of these adsorbents.

The evolution of As excess in As-rich Ga1-xAsx films is analyzed for distinct As concentrations and different annealing temperatures. Initially the samples are amorphous and crystallize partially after thermal annealing. The formation of both amorphous and crystalline As clusters is examined by micro-Raman and X-ray diffraction analysis. When highly and moderately unbalanced materials are compared, differences are clearly observed concerning the crystallization temperature and the migration kinetics of the As excess. These differences are explained by the fort-nation of As precipitates around the GaAs crystallites in the moderately unbalanced material, contrasting with the migration of the As excess to the film surface in the highly unbalanced material.

This work presents results concerning the preparation of redispersible tin oxide nanoparticles achieved by using Tiron molecule ((OH)(2)C(6)H(2) (SO(3)Na)(2)) as surface modifying agent. The adsorption isotherm measurements show that an amount of 10 wt.% of Tiron is need to recover the SnO(2) nanoparticles surface with a monolayer. These nanoparticles can be easily redispersed in tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide at pH greater than or equal to11 until a powder concentration of 12 vol.% of tin. Under these conditions, hydrodynamic particle size is about 7 nm and increases until 52 nm at pH 6 due to the aggregation phenomenon. The time evolution of the viscoelastic properties indicates that the suspensions at pH 12.5, containing 12 vol.% tin oxide and 10 wt.% of surface modifier are kinetically stable. After thermal treatment at different temperature the powder characterisation evidences that the presence of Tiron monolayer at the nanoparticles surface increases the thermal stability of the porous texture and prevent the micropore size growth. This set of results contributes to satisfy the demand for more controlled synthesis of nanoparticles with high thermal stability as required for fabrication of ultrafiltration ceramic membranes. The present study describes a methodology of dosage of glycerol kinase (GK) from baker's yeast. The standardization of the activity of the glycerol kinase from baker's yeast was accomplished using the diluted enzymatic preparation containing glycerol phosphate oxidase (GPO) and glycerol kinase. The mixture was incubated at 60 degrees C by 15 min and the reaction was stopped by the SDS solution addition. A first set of experiments was carried out in order to investigate the individual effect of temperature (7), pH and substrate concentration (S), on GK activity and stability. The pH and temperature stability tests showed that the enzyme presented a high stability to pH 6.0-8.0 and the thermal stability were completely maintained up to 50 degrees C during 1 h. The K(m) of the enzyme for glycerol was calculated to be 2 mM and V(max) to be 1.15 U/mL. In addition, modeling and optimization of reaction conditions was attempted by response surface methodology (RSM). Higher activity values will be attained at temperatures between 52 and 56 degrees C, pH around 10.2-10.5 and substrate concentrations from 150 to 170 mM.This low cost method for glycerol kinase dosage in a sequence of reactions is of great importance for many industries, like food, sugar and alcohol. RSM showed to be an adequate approach for modeling the reaction and optimization of reaction conditions to maximize glycerol kinase activity. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

With suitable thermal treatments, a nearly stoichiometric cordierite glass (2 MgO.2 Al2O3. 5 SiO2) shows a variety of crystal morphologies on the external surfaces: lozenges, regular and elongated hexagons, spherical and square shaped particles. We initially identified these morphologies through optical and scanning electron microscopy techniques. Their structural features were distinguished by x-ray diffraction patterns, infrared and Roman microprobe spectra. We concluded that there are close structural similarities for: lozenges and glass matrix; regular and elongated hexagons; spherical and square particles. The ordering degree increases in the following sequence: glass matrix, lozenges, hexagons, squares and spheres. The lozenge crystals are known as X-phase. The hexagons belong to the μ-cordierite (high quartz solid solution) metastable phase and the squares and spheres to the α-cordierite stable phase.

Lead lanthanum zirconate titanate (PLZT) thin films with (9/65/35) stoichiometry were prepared by dip coating from polymeric precursor method. The films deposited on silicon (100) substrates, were thermally treated from 450° to 700°C for 6 hours in order to study the influence of thermal treatment on the crystallinity, microstructure, grain size and roughness of the final film. X-ray diffraction results showed that PLZT phase crystallizes at low temperature (500°C) and present preferential orientation. It was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) that it is possible to obtain dense thin films at temperatures around 650°C. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies showed that the grain size and roughness are strongly influenced by the annealing temperature.

In cases of decorative and functional applications, chromium results in protection against wear and corrosion combined with chemical resistance and good lubricity. However, pressure to identify alternatives or to improve conventional chromium electroplating mechanical characteristics has increased in recent years, related to the reduction in the fatigue strength of the base material and to environmental requirements. The high efficiency and fluoride-free hard chromium electroplating is an improvement to the conventional process, considering chemical and physical final properties. One of the most interesting, environmentally safer and cleaner alternatives for the replacement of hard chrome plating is tungsten carbide thermal spray coating, applied by the high velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) process. The aim of this study was to analyse the effects of the tungsten carbide thermal spray coating applied by the HP/HVOF process and of the high efficiency and fluoride-free hard chromium electroplating (in the present paper called 'accelerated'), in comparison to the conventional hard chromium electroplating on the AISI 4340 high strength steel behaviour in fatigue, corrosion, and abrasive wear tests. The results showed that the coatings were damaging to the AISI 4340 steel behaviour when submitted to fatigue testing, with the tungsten carbide thermal spray coatings showing the better performance. Experimental data from abrasive wear tests were conclusive, indicating better results from the WC coating. Regarding corrosion by salt spray test, both coatings were completely corroded after 72 h exposure. Scanning electron microscopy technique (SEM) and optical microscopy were used to observe crack origin sites, thickness and adhesion in all the coatings and microcrack density in hard chromium electroplatings, to aid in the results analysis. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. This work aims the development of a dedicated system for detection of burning in surface grinding process, where the process will constantly be monitored through the acoustic emission and electric power of the induction motor drive. Acquired by an analog-digital converter, algorithms process the signals and a control signal is generated to inform the operator or interrupt the process in case of burning occurrence. Moreover, the system makes possible the process monitoring via Internet. Additionally, a comparative study between parameters DPO and FKS is carried through. In the experimental work one type of. steel (ABNT-1020 annealed) and one type of grinding wheel referred to as TARGA, model ART 3TG80.3 NVHB, were employed.

Grinding process is usually the last finishing process of a precision component in the manufacturing industries. This process is utilized for manufacturing parts of different materials, so it demands results such as low roughness, dimensional and shape error control, optimum tool-life, with minimum cost and time. Damages on the parts are very expensive since the previous processes and the grinding itself are useless when the part is damaged in this stage. This work aims to investigate the efficiency of digital signal processing tools of acoustic emission signals in order to detect thermal damages in grinding process. To accomplish such a goal, an experimental work was carried out for 15 runs in a surface grinding machine operating with an aluminum oxide grinding wheel and ABNT 1045 e VC131 steels. The acoustic emission signals were acquired from a fixed sensor placed on the workpiece holder. A high sampling rate acquisition system at 2.5 MHz was used to collect the raw acoustic emission instead of root mean square value usually employed. In each test AE data was analyzed off-line, with results compared to inspection of each workpiece for burn and other metallurgical anomaly. A number of statistical signal processing tools have been evaluated.
