Ceftriaxone sodium is a cephalosporin with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and belongs to the third generation of cephalosporins. Regarding the quality control of medicines, a validated microbiological assay for the determination of ceftriaxone sodium in powder for injectable solution has not been reported yet. This paper reports the development and validation of a simple, accurate and reproducible agar diffusion method to quantify ceftriaxone sodium in powder for injectable solution. The assay is based on the inhibitory effect of ceftriaxone sodium on the strain of Bacillus subtilis ATCC 9371 IAL 1027 used as test microorganism. The results were treated statistically by analysis of variance and were found to be linear (r = 0.999) in the selected range of 15.0-60.0 μg/mL, precise with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of repeatability intraday = 1.40%, accurate (100.46%) and robust with a RSD lower than 1.28%. The results demonstrated the validity of the proposed bioassay, which allows reliable ceftriaxone sodium quantitation in pharmaceutical samples and therefore can be used as a useful alternative methodology for the routine quality control of this medicine. © 2012 by the authors; licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

This paper reports our initial research to obtain SrWO4 microcrystals by the injection of ions into a hot aqueous solution and their photocatalytic (PC) properties. These microcrystals were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rietveld refinements and Fourier transform (FT)-Raman spectroscopy. The shape and average size of these SrWO 4 microcrystals were observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In addition, we have investigated the PC activity of microcrystals for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) and rhodamine 6G (Rh6G) dyes. XRD patterns, Rietveld refinement data and FT-Raman spectroscopy confirmed that SrWO4 microcrystals have a scheelite-type tetragonal structure without deleterious phases. FT-Raman spectra exhibited 12 Raman-active modes in a range from 50 to 1000 cm-1. FE-SEM and TEM images suggested that the SrWO4 microcrystals (rice-like - 95%; star-, flower-, and urchin-like - 5%) were formed by means of primary/secondary nucleation events and self-assembly processes. Based on these FE-SEM/TEM images, a crystal growth mechanism was proposed and discussed in details in this work. Finally, a good PC activity was first discovered of the SrWO4 microcrystals for the degradation of RhB after 80 min and Rh6G after 50 min dyes under ultraviolet-light, respectively. © 2012 The Society of Powder Technology Japan. In this work La1-xCaxCoO3 (x = 0-0.4) pigments were synthesized by the polymeric precursor method with heat treatments at 700, 800 and 900 C for 4 h. The powders were characterized by colorimetry, UV-vis spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). The X-ray diffraction patterns showed the presence of a single phase perovskite, changing its structure from rhombohedral to cubic, when calcium was added to the lattice. All of the pigments had a black colour with a strong absorption over the whole of the visible spectrum as a consequence of the different oxidation states of cobalt and the high short-range disorder. The substitution of Ca2+ for La3+ did not influence the pigment colour but decreased its final cost. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are a promising solution to face the antibiotic-resistant problem because they display little or no resistance effects. Dimeric analogues of select AMPs have shown pharmacotechnical advantages, making these molecules promising candidates for the development of novel antibiotic agents. Here, we evaluate the effects of dimerization on the structure and biological activity of the AMP aurein 1.2 (AU). AU and the C- and N-terminal dimers, (AU)2K and E(AU)2, respectively, were synthesized by solid-phase peptide synthesis. Circular dichroism spectra indicated that E(AU)2 has a coiled coil structure in water while (AU)2K has an α-helix structure. In contrast, AU displayed typical spectra for disordered structures. In LPC micelles, all peptides acquired a high amount of α-helix structure. Hemolytic and vesicle permeabilization assays showed that AU has a concentration dependence activity, while this effect was less pronounced for dimeric versions, suggesting that dimerization may change the mechanism of action of AU. Notably, the antimicrobial activity against bacteria and yeast decreased with dimerization. However, dimeric peptides promoted the aggregation of C. albicans. The ability to aggregate yeast cells makes dimeric versions of AU attractive candidates to inhibit the adhesion of C. albicans to biological targets and medical devices, preventing disease caused by this fungus. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Wien.

Chemical and structural data are reported for platinum-palladium intermediates from two nuggets found at Corrego Bom Sucesso, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Three grains with simple stoichiometries (i.e. PtxPd1 -x with x ∼0.67, ∼0.5 and ∼0.33, which correspond to Pt2Pd, PtPd and PtPd2, respectively) were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and electron-probe microanalysis. In the absence of single-crystal data it might be tempting to hypothesize that such simple stoichiometries represent distinct mineral species, however structural analyses show that all of the phases are cubic and crystallize in space group Fm3̄m. They are, therefore, natural intermediates in the palladium-platinum solid solution. Reflectance and micro-hardness values are reported for the samples and a comparison with the pure metallic elements made. On the basis of information gained from the chemical and structural characterization it can be concluded that there is a complete solid solution between Pt and Pd in nature. These findings corroborate results from experiments on synthetic compounds. © 2013 The Mineralogical Society.

Eumelanin pigments show hydration-dependent conductivity, broad-band UV-vis absorption, and chelation of metal ions. Solution-processing of synthetic eumelanins opens new possibilities for the characterization of eumelanin in thin film form and its integration into bioelectronic devices. We investigate the effect of different synthesis routes and processing solvents on the growth, the morphology, and the chemical composition of eumelanin thin films using atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We further characterize the films by transient electrical current measurements obtained at 50% to 90% relative humidity, relevant for bioelectronic applications. We show that the use of dimethyl sulfoxide is preferable over ammonia solution as processing solvent, yielding homogeneous films with surface roughnesses below 0.5 nm and a chemical composition in agreement with the eumelanin molecular structure. These eumelanin films grow in a quasi layer-by-layer mode, each layer being composed of nanoaggregates, 1-2 nm high, 10-30 nm large. The transient electrical measurements using a planar two-electrode device suggest that there are two contributions to the current, electronic and ionic, the latter being increasingly dominant at higher hydration, and point to the importance of time-dependent electrical characterization of eumelanin films. In this report we track the structural changes suffered by ITO along galvanostatic polarization at different current densities by X-ray diffraction and SEM micrographs. The XRD shown that cathodic treatment induces structural change in ITO, characterized by appearing peaks set distinct from ITO original structure associated to metallic phase of the solid solution of In-Sn. It is interesting to note that although the different ions present in the solution are not, at least to a noticeable degree, incorporated in the metallic phase, the SEM images show that they do influence its formation, pointing to some type of adsorptive mechanism of the inert ions during the lateral diffusion of the metallic ions. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. This paper presents a study case in which a geosynthetic-reinforced soil (GRS) structure was used to rebuild a 12 m high slope after its failure. The failed slope is located between the parking lot of a private company and a public school. Due to surrounding structures restrictions, this project required a solution with rapidity in execution. In addition, as a requirement established by its owner, this structure should recover the original geometry of the slope. Besides the importance regarding surrounding constructions, an interesting aspect of this study case relies on the versatility of geosynthetic materials. A woven geotextile was used as reinforcement. Five other geosynthetic materials were used in this study case. Facing comprised a geocell filled with local soil cover and grass mats, resulting in a green facing. A geonet was used to hold the grass mats in place before grass roots development. Regarding the drainage system, geocomposite drains and geopipes were installed to drain subsurface water. A nonwoven geotextile was used as filter in drainage trenches, which were placed near the structure toe. Additionally to the GRS structure, the lower portion of the slope was reinforced with soil nailing technique. The face of the nailed soil portion was covered with sandbags and shotcrete. It emphasizes the flexibility of GRS structures regarding their application with other technical options in Geotechnical Engineering. The economic aspect of this study case also deserves attention. It did not require soil transportation and other design and construction steps, e.g. concrete structures design and construction.
