In this work the technique of X-ray reflectometry was applied to study zirconiumsulfate films deposited by sol-gel dip-coating process on a borosilicate glass surface. The influence of withdrawal speed and temperature of thermal treatment on the film structure are analyzed. The thermal evolution of the density and thickness of the film was compared with these properties measured for a monolithic xerogel by helium picnometry and thermomechanical analysis. The fitting of experimental curves by classical reflectivity model showed the presence of an additional layer at the top surface of the coating. Layer thickness increases with increase of withdrawal speed in agreement with the Landau-Levich model. The apparent and real densities are similar for coatings fired below 400 degrees C, which shows that the films are free of pores. The shrinkage during firing is anisotropic, occurring essentially perpendicular to the coating surface. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

In order to improve the chemical resistance of zirconium fluoride glass a protective transparent SnO2 layer was deposited by the solgel dip-coating process in the presence of Tiron (R) as particle surface modifier agent. After water immersion for different periods of time, both coated and non-coated fluoride glasses were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, mass loss evaluation, infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In contrast to the effects occurring for non-coated glass, where the surface undergoes a rapid selective dissolution of the most soluble species, the results for the SnO2-coated glass showed that the filling of the film nanopores by dissolved glass material results in a hermetic barrier protecting the glass surface. The selective glass dissolution was confirmed by liquid chromatography measurements of the etching solution after each exposure time. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

1. To determine whether diltiazem protects the hypoxic myocardium by reducing contractile work, we have compared the effects of diltiazem and quiescence on left ventricular (LV) papillary muscle subjected to hypoxia. Papillary muscles were obtained from male Charles River CD rats weighing 150-250 g.2. Four groups of muscles were studied: control (N = 6), non-stimulation (N = 10), diltiazem 10(-4) M (N = 6) and diltiazem 10(-4) M plus non-stimulation (N = 10).3. Isolated mt LV papillary muscles were studied in Krebs-Henseleit solution with a calcium concentration of 2.52 mM at 28-degrees-C while contracting isometrically at a stimulation rate of 0.2 Hz. Resting tension and active isometric tension were measured.4. Both diltiazem and quiescence significantly attenuated contracture tension during hypoxia (0.91 +/- 0.10 vs 2.26 +/- 0.49 g/mm2 for diltiazem vs control, and 0.55 +/- 0.18 vs 2.26 +/- 0.49 g/mm2 for quiescence vs control). Recovery of active tension was improved in the diltiazem groups during reoxygenation (4.16 +/- 0.42 vs 3.75 +/- 0.51, 3.53 +/- 0.15 vs 2.90 +/- 0.13, 5.84 +/- 0.33 vs 6.48 +/- 0.29 and 5.98 +/- 0.90 vs 7.67 +/- 0.68 g/mm2 for diltiazem, diltiazem non-stimulation, non-stimulation and control groups).5. The results suggest that the protective effect of diltiazem during hypoxia was due to the reduction in energy demand of the myocardium.

The X-ray reflectivity technique was applied in the study of tin oxide films deposited by sol-gel dip-coating on borosilicate glasses. The influence of the withdrawal speed and temperature of thermal treatment on the film structure was analyzed. We have compared the thermal evolution of the density and the shrinkage of the films with these properties measured for the monolithic xerogel by helium picnometry and thermomechanical analysis. In agreement with the Landau-Levich model, the layer thickness increases by increasing the withdrawal speed. Nevertheless, it decreases with the increase of the thermal treatment temperature, due to the densification process. The values of apparent density are smaller than the skeletal density, which shows that the films are porous. The comparison between the film and the monolith indicates that shrinkage during firing is anisotropic, occurring essentially perpendicular to the coating surface.

The effects of bath composition and electroplating conditions on structure, morphology, and composition of amorphous Fe-Cr-P-Co deposits on AISI 1020 steel substrate, priorly plated with a thin Cu deposit, were investigated. The increase of charge density activates the inclusion of Cr in the deposit. However, above specific values of the charge density, which depend on the deposition current density, the Cr content in the deposit decreases. This Cr content decreasing is probably due to the significant hydrogen evolution with the increasing of deposition cur-rent and charge density. The effect of charge density on the content of Fe and Co is not clear. However, there is a tendency of increasing of Fe content and decreasing of Co content with the raising of current density. The Co is more easily deposited than the P, and its presence results in a more intense inhibition effect on the Cr deposition than the inhibition effect caused by P presence. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis showed that Co increasing in the Fe-Cr-P-Co alloys analyzed does not promote the susceptibility to microcracks, which led to a good quality deposit. The passive film of the Fe-Cr-P-Co alloy shows a high ability formation and high protective capacity, and the results obtained by current density of corrosion, j(cor), show that the deposit with addition of Co, Fe31Cr11P28Co30, presents a higher corrosion resistance than the deposit with addition of Ni, Fe54Cr21P20Ni5. Polysiloxane hybrid films were deposited on stainless steel by dip-coating using a sol prepared by hydrolytic co-polycondensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and 3-methacryloxy propyltrimethoxysilane (MPTS), followed by radical polymerization of methacrylic moieties. The TEOS/MPTS ratio was chosen equal to 2 and the Ce/Si ratio varied between 0.01 and 0.1. The effects of cerium concentration and valence (Ce(III) and Ce (IV)) on the structural features of polysiloxane films were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and (29)Si nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The corrosion protection of stainless steel by the hybrid coatings was investigated by XPS, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization curves, after immersion in saline and acid solutions. The NMR results have shown for Ce(IV) doped films a high degree of polycondensation of up to 89%. Electrochemical analysis has evidenced that hybrid films with the lowest Ce concentration act as an efficient diffusion barrier by increasing the corrosion resistance and reducing the current densities up to 3 orders of magnitude compared to bare stainless steel. The analysis of structural effects induced by Ce(III) and Ce(IV) species, performed by XPS, indicates that the improved corrosion protection of Ce(IV) doped films might be mainly related to the enhanced polymerization of siloxane groups. Cisplatin is a potent drug used in clinical oncology but causes spermatogenesis damage. Amifostine is a drug used against toxicity caused by ionizing irradiation and chemotherapeutic drugs. Since cisplatin provokes fertility and induces germ cell apoptosis and necrosis, we proposed to evaluate the amifostine cytoprotective action on testes of cisplatin-treated rats. Thirty-day-old prepubertal Wistar rats received a single cisplatin dose of 5 mg/kg and were killed after 3, 6, and 12 hr. The hematoxylin-eosin stained testicular sections were submitted to histological, morphometric, and stereological analysis. The terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated deoxyuridinetriphosphate nick end-labeling (TUNEL) method was used to label apoptotic cells. TUNEL-positive and TUNEL-negative germ cells with abnormal nuclear morphology (ANM) were scored. Significant alterations of greater part of the parameters occurred in the cisplatin-treated group (CE) compared to the group that received amifostine before the cisplatin-treatment (ACE); however, testicular weight and volume did not vary between these groups. Tubular diameter was reduced in CE in comparison to ACE rats, while interstitial tissue and lymphatic space volume and volume density were significantly higher in CE rats; interstitial testicular edema probably occurred in cisplatin-treated rats. CE rats showed important histological alterations, which were more accentuated than in ACE rats. The numerical densities of apoptotic germ cells and TUNEL-negative cells with ANM were lower in ACE than in CE rats. In conclusion, the amifostine previously administered to prepubertal rats reduced the testicular damage caused by cisplatin. We conclude that amifostine partially protected the rat seminiferous epithelium against cisplatin toxicity.

The electrochemical behavior of a coating of cobalt oxide on cold-rolled steel in alkaline sodium sulfate was Studied using the electrochemical techniques of open-circuit potential measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The coating was prepared at different annealing temperatures ranging from 350 to 750 degreesC and characterized by SEM, EDX and XRD. Below 550 degreesC the composition of the coating was basically of Co3O4. At 750 degreesC CoO was formed and big cracks appeared on the film exposing an inner layer of iron oxides. Analysis of the EIS data is very difficult because of the complexity of the interface structure. It can be inferred that the charge transfer resistance of the coatings prepared at 350 and 450 C were higher than those for the coatings prepared at temperatures above 550 degreesC. The nature of the protective film formed by benzotriazole (BTAH) on the surface of the 90/10 CuNi alloy in deaerated 0.5 mol L-1 H2SO4 solution containing Fe(III) ions as oxidant was investigated by weight-loss, calorimetric measurements, and by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The SERS measurements show that the protective film is composed by the [Cu(I)BTA](n), polymeric complex and that the BTAH molecules are also adsorbed on the electrode surface. A modification of the BET isotherm for adsorption of gases ill solids is proposed to describe the experimental results obtained from weight-loss experiments that suggest an adsorption in multilayers. Electrochemical studies of copper and nickel in 0.5 mol L-1 H2SO4 in presence and absence of BTAH have also been made as an aid to interpret the results. The calculated adsorption free energy of the cuprous benzotriazolate on the surface of the alloy is in accordance with the value for pure copper. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The objective of this study was to investigate human leucocyte antigen (HLA) genes in patients chronically infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) and to analyse the possible role of these genes in the progression of chronic hepatitis C. One hundred and forty-five (145) Brazilian patients infected only with HCV genotype 1 were evaluated. HLA class I (A*, B*, C*) and class II (DRB1*, DQA1*, DQB1*) typing were carried out by PCR-SSO, through Luminex technology. Associations were found with protection against development of liver damage by both DRB1*11 (5.0% versus 18.2%, P = 0.0016, OR = 0.23, CI 95% = 0.090.58; Pc=0.0208) and DRB1*11-DQA1*05-DQB1*03 haplotype (4.2% versus 15.3%, P = 0.0032; OR = 0.24, CI 95% = 0.08-0.64). Liver damage was associated with HLA-C*04 in patients with <20 years of infection (38.4% versus 9.1%, P = 0.002, OR = 6.25, CI 95% = 1.9719.7; Pc=0.0238). It is concluded that HLA alleles can influence the development of liver damage in HCV type-1 chronically infected Brazilian patients.
