In this work, the effects of sowing densities on peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) crop, cv. Tatu were studied. Three experiments were carried out under field conditions on a soil classified as ''Latosol Roxo'', in the Municipality of Pontal, SP, during the wet seasons of 1987-88, 1988-89, and 1989-90. The densities studied were 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, and 28 seeds in one metter of row, under some row spacing of 0.60 m. The pod number per plant was the yield component responsible for the variation of pod production per plant and these decreased with the increase of sowing density. However. The low pod production per plant in high densities of sowing was compensated by the high populations of plants and these produced high yield. Thus, good pod yields were obtained, without significant losses of yield compared with the higher densities, at density of 13 seeds per meter, in 1987-88, 16 seeds per meter in 1988-89 and 10 seeds per meter in 1989-90, that resulted, respectively, in 11.36, 12.72 and 9.28 plants per meter at harvest time.

Stenoma catenifer Walsingham is the major pest in avocado groves (Persea americana Mill.) in the Neotropical region. Management has been difficult for many reasons related to the reduced knowledge on its bioecology and the avocado growing systems. The goal of this work was to study the vertical distribution of S. catenifer in avocado plants, the gagging effect of infested fruit on its survival, and the losses caused. The experiments were conducted in a commercial grove located at the Sao Tomas de Aquino, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, during the 2001/2002 and 2002/2003 growing season. S. catenifer was observed especially at the lower and central part of the plant, and the inner canopy was the least attacked in comparison with the north, south, east and west quadrants. These results may be important indicators for the use of am adequate sampling procedure. The highest percentage of attacked fruit had one to four larvae; in some cases up to eight individuals per fruit were found. The losses caused by the borer varied during the agricultural season, with figures close to 5% in a single evaluation, and the harvest loss may reach 27%. The bagging of infested fruit caused mortality of S. catenifer, as observed through the evaluation carried out four days later.

Purpose: the aim of this study was to evaluate bone regeneration in bone cavities filled with particulate autogenous bone either harvest in blocks and subjected to milling procedures or collected during osteotomy with implant burs. Materials and Methods: In 12 rabbits, 3 noncritical unicortical cavities 7 mm in diameter were prepared with a trephine drill on the right tibia. The cavities were filled respectively with particulate autogenous bone achieved with a manual bone crusher ( particulate group), with particulate autogenous bone obtained using bone collector during osteotomy ( collected group), and with blood clot ( control group). Animals were sacrificed at 7, 15, and 30 days after surgery ( 4 animals for each time period). The sections were examined by histologic and histomorphometric analysis. Results: At 7 days, the samples were filled by coagulum, and bone particles were observed only in the collected (24%) and particulate groups (44.75%). At 15 days, there was connective differentiation in all groups, with presence of grafted bone particles and onset of newly formed bone in the collected (38.88%) and particulate groups (46.0%). At 30 days, there was bone fill ( immature trabecular bone) of the cavities in the control (50%), collected (64.63%) and particulate groups (66%). Conclusion: No significant difference was demonstrated between noncritical unicortical bone defects in rabbit tibiae filled with particulate bone harvested as a block and subjected to milling and those filled with bone collected during osteotomy with implant drills when the defects were observed up to 30 days following their creation.

Data on pressure drop were obtained in stainless steel, sanitary fittings and valves during laminar and turbulent flow of aqueous suspensions of sucrose and bentonite. The rheological properties of these suspensions were determined and the Bingham model provided the best fitting with the experimental data. Friction losses were measured in fully- and partially-open butterfly and plug valves, bends and union. Values of loss coefficients (k(f)) were calculated and correlated as functions of the classical Reynolds number and the Reynolds number proposed by Govier and Aziz (1972) for viscoplastic fluids. The two-k method and a new proposed model presented the best adjustments for the Govier and Aziz Reynolds number, and Hedstrom and classical Reynolds numbers, respectively.

This paper evaluates emissions to the atmosphere of biologically available nitrogen compounds in a region characterized by intensive sugar cane biofuel ethanol production. Large emissions of NH(3) and NO,, as well as particulate nitrate and ammonium, occur at the harvest when the crop is burned, with the amount of nitrogen released equivalent to similar to 35% of annual fertilizer-N application. Nitrogen oxides concentrations show a positive association with fire frequency, indicating that biomass burning is a major emission source, with mean concentrations of NO, doubling in the dry season relative to the wet season. During the dry season biomass burning is a source of NH3, with other sources (wastes, soil, biogenic) predominant during the wet season. Estimated NO(2)-N, NH(3)-N, NO(3)(-)-N and NH(4)(+)-N emission fluxes from sugar cane burning in a planted area,of ca. 2.2 x 10(6) ha are 11.0, 1.1, 0.2, and 1.2 Gg N yr(-1), respectively.

Eutherian mammals share a common ancestor that evolved into two main placental types, i.e., hemotrophic (e.g., human and mouse) and histiotrophic (e.g., farm animals), which differ in invasiveness. Pregnancies initiated with assisted reproductive techniques (ART) in farm animals are at increased risk of failure; these losses were associated with placental defects, perhaps due to altered gene expression. Developmentally regulated genes in the placenta seem highly phylogenetically conserved, whereas those expressed later in pregnancy are more species-specific. To elucidate differences between hemotrophic and epitheliochorial placentae, gene expression data were compiled from microarray studies of bovine placental tissues at various stages of pregnancy. Moreover, an in silico subtractive library was constructed based on homology of bovine genes to the database of zebrafish - a nonplacental vertebrate. In addition, the list of placental preferentially expressed genes for the human and mouse were collected using bioinformatics tools (Tissue-specific Gene Expression and Regulation [TiGER] - for humans, and tissue-specific genes database (TiSGeD) - for mice and humans). Humans, mice, and cattle shared 93 genes expressed in their placentae. Most of these were related to immune function (based on analysis of gene ontology). Cattle and women shared expression of 23 genes, mostly related to hormonal activity, whereas mice and women shared 16 genes (primarily sexual differentiation and glycoprotein biology). Because the number of genes expressed by the placentae of both cattle and mice were similar (based on cluster analysis), we concluded that both cattle and mice were suitable models to study the biology of the human placenta. The nutritional management of infants admitted with diarrhoea to the University Hospital of Botucatu includes a change from bolus feeding of a modulated minced-chicken formula to a continuous nasogastric drip (NGD) feeding, whenever the required calorie intake is not achieved or the diarrhoea does not subside. To evaluate this approach, the clinical course and weight changes of 63 children, aged 1-20 months, were reviewed; most (81 per cent) were below the third percentile for weight at admission and 76 per cent had a total duration of diarrhoea ≥10 days. Associated infections, mainly systemic, were present at or after admission in 70 per cent of them. Twenty-five survivors needed nutritional support (NS), predominantly NGD, for a median duration of 30 per cent of their admission time, and were compared to 31 survivors managed without NS. Those who necessitated NS lost weight for a significantly longer median time (12x4 days, p<0.005), but their total weight loss was similar (5x4 per cent) as well as diarrhoea's duration (8x7 days). There was a tendency for a longer hospitalization (21x16 days 0.05
during admission were similar for both groups. Both groups of survivors received similar amounts of energy, although the initial increase was delayed for those who needed the NGD. Seven infants (11 per cent) died, most of overwhelming infection, and presented a high total weight loss, albeit receiving NS for 71 per cent of their admission's time. It was concluded that feeding diarrhoeic infants with a NGD when necessary, possibly prevented a greater nutritional insult for the survivors. The NGD can be safely employed and should be valued, provided weight losses are carefully monitored in order to detect infants at highest risk.

The productivity of 28 tomato cultivars was evaluated over three stages of harvest. The study was carried out during from June to December of 1999 in an open field at the experimental area of the Section of Olericulture and Aromatic Medicinal Plants, Department of Crop Production at FCAV-UNESP, Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil. The cultivars studied were H 7155, Hypeel, Andino, U 573, H 9036, IPA 6, H 9494, AG 33, Yuba, RPT 1294, AG 72, Pelmeech, Curico, Hypeel 45, RPT 1478, H 9492, H 9498, H 2710, Hitech 45, Halley, Botu 13, H 9553, U 646, NK 1570, AG 45, RPT 1095, RPT 1570, and PSX 37511. The experimental design was a randomized block design with four repetitions, with five plants per plot. Productivity was evaluated at three stages of harvest at 119, 149 and 179 days after seeding. There were no significant differences among the cultivars at the first harvest (119 days). The majority of the cultivars produced their highest yield at the second harvest; the most productive cultivars were Curicó and AG 72, which yielded 4.69 and 4.67 kg/plant, respectively, although they did not differ statistically from the cultivars Hypeel 45 (4.35 kg/plant) and H 9498 (4.16 kg/plant). Yields of the cultivars Andino and H 9494 were evenly distributed between the second and third harvests. At the third harvest, cultivar IPA 6 had the highest yield (2.9 kg/plant) and was statistically different from all other cultivars except H 9036 (2.34 kg). These two cultivars had the most delayed and concentrated maturity, making them suitable for mechanical harvesting, although at a later time. Cultivar AG 72 had the greatest total yield (5.76 kg/plant), but it was not statistically different from cultivars Hypeel 45 (5.43 kg), Curico (4.17 kg), H 9498 (4.83 kg), H 7155 (4.58 kg) and Halley (4.55 kg). All of the cultivars, with the exception of cultivars H 9036, IPA 6, Andino and H 9494 showed in the second harvest concentrated maturity, making it suitable for mechanical harvesting.

The lodging of some rice cultivars at harvest time can lead to significant losses in yield, and the inappropriate water and nitrogen management, under high-tech conditions, can aggravate the problem. The use of vegetal regulators is an alternative to reduce lodging, however, information on this topic are rare. The study aimed to evaluate the application of glyphosate sub doses (26 g ha -1, 52 g ha -1, 78 g ha -1, 104 g ha -1, 130 g ha -1, 156 g ha -1, and 182 g ha -1) on agronomical traits, development, and yield of upland rice crops irrigated by aspersion, during the floral differentiation period. The experiment was carried out in Selvíria, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil, through the agricultural years of 2008/2009 and 2009/2010. The increase of glyphosate sub doses, at the floral differentiation period of the Primavera cultivar, reduced the plants height, panicle size, and, consequently, yield. Sub doses higher than or equal to 78 g ha -1 eliminated the plants lodging process.

The aim of this work was to evaluate apples covered with chitosan during storage at ambient temperature. 'Royal Gala' apples were covered with chitosan (MRQ), immersed in acetic acid solution (MB) or did not receive any treatment (MC) and subsequently analyzed physicochemical, sensorial andinstrumentally, as well as for rotten occurrence, at zero, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42 and 46 days of storage. The ratio, pH and reducing sugar contents increased while total titratable acidity, total sugars, total solids and firmness were reduced during storage. Was observed a drastically reduction of ascorbic acid and slight increase on soluble solids, except in the apples that were not pretreated (MC). Luminosity and chromaticity ratio values improved with time, with higher intensity in MRQ. Rotten occurrence was not expressive. The acceptance of appearance, color, global impression, aroma and flavor decreased with time, and appearance and texture were considered the most important sensory attributes for apples. The use of chitosan delayed ripening, reduced losses in firmness and presented a more intense bright, extending shelf life period up to seven days.

Polar Regions are the most important soil carbon reservoirs on Earth. Monitoring soil carbon storage in a changing global climate context may indicate possible effects of climate change on terrestrial environments. In this regard, we need to understand the dynamics of soil organic matter in relation to its chemical characteristics. We evaluated the influence of chemical characteristics of humic substances on the process of soil organic matter mineralization in selected Maritime Antarctic soils. A laboratory assay was carried out with soils from five locations from King George Island. We determined the contents of total organic carbon, oxidizable carbon fractions of soil organic matter, and humic substances. Two in situ field experiments were carried out during two summers, in order to evaluate the CO2-C emissions in relation to soil temperature variations. The overall low amounts of soil organic matter in Maritime Antarctic soils have a low humification degree and reduced microbial activity. CO2-C emissions showed significant exponential relationship with temperature, suggesting a sharp increase in CO2-C emissions with a warming scenario, and Q10 values (the percentage increase in emission for a 10°C increase in soil temperature) were higher than values reported from elsewhere. The sensitivity of the CO2-C emission in relation to temperature was significantly correlated with the humification degree of soil organic matter and microbial activity for Antarctic soils. © 2012 Antarctic Science Ltd.

The goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of edible coating pre-treatments on the retention of provitamin A during pumpkin drying. The coatings used were based on native and modified maize and cassava starch. To evaluate the effects of these coatings, slices of 'Dry Rajada' pumpkin were dried at 70 °C both with and without starch coatings applied at 30 and 80-90 °C. Carotenoid content was determined through HPLC using a C 30 column. Significant losses (12-15%) of trans-α-carotene and trans-β-carotene were observed when slices were dried without the coating. Significant improvement of carotenoid content was observed for dehydrated slices that were previously coated with a native maize starch solution at 90 °C, as well as with a modified maize starch solution at 30 °C and also with a modified cassava starch solution at 90 °C. The application of these starch solutions probably produced a more uniform film that adhered to the slices, minimizing carotenoid degradation during pumpkin drying and, as a consequence, resulting in a product that can be considered a good source of provitamin A. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.
