The effect of magnetic field enhanced plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) in silicon substrate has been investigated at low and high pulsed bias voltages. The magnetic field in magnetic bottle configuration was generated by two magnetic coils installed outside the vacuum chamber. The presence of both, electric and magnetic field in PIII creates a system of crossed E x B fields, promoting plasma rotation around the target. The magnetized electrons drifting in crossed E x B fields provide electron-neutral collision. Consequently, the efficient background gas ionization augments the plasma density around the target where a magnetic confinement is achieved. As a result, the ion current density increases, promoting changes in the samples surface properties, especially in the surface roughness and wettability and also an increase of implantation dose and depth. It is presented a study conducted on the physical and electrochemical properties of fluorinated a-C:H films deposited onto a commercial aluminum alloy (AA 5052). The coatings were deposited from mixtures of 91% of acetylene and 9% of argon by plasma immersion ion implantation and deposition technique, PIIID. Total gas pressure was 44 Pa and deposition time (t(dep)) was varied from 300 to 1200 s. The depositing plasmas were generated by the application of radiofrequency power (13.56 MHz, 100W) to the upper electrode and high voltage negative pulses (2400 V. 300 Hz) to the sample holder. Fluorine was incorporated in a post-deposition plasma treatment (13.56 MHz, 70W, 13 Pa) generated from sulfur hexafluoride atmosphere. Chemical structure and composition of the films were investigated using infrared reflectance/absorbance spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The corrosion resistance of the layers was determined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in a 3.5% NaCl solution, at room temperature. Films presented good adhesion to the substrates and are classified as hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) with oxygen traces. Fluorine was detected in all the samples after the post-deposition treatment being its proportion independent on the deposition time. Film thickness presented different tendencies with t(dep), revealing the variation of the deposition rate as a function of the deposition time. Such fluorinated a-C:H films improved the corrosion resistance of the aluminum surface. In a general way the corrosion resistance was higher for films prepared with lower deposition times. The variation of sample temperature with t(dep) was found to be decisive for the concentration of defects in the films and, consequently, for the performance of the samples in electrochemical tests. Results are interpreted in terms of the energy delivered to the growing layer by ionic bombardment. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The intra- and intermolecular rates of degradation of cephaclor were determined with and without hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTABr). Micellar-derived spectral shifts were used to measure the association of the ionic forms as well as to determine the effect of CTABr on the apparent acid dissociation constant of the antibiotic. The rate of degradation of cephaclor increased with detergent and was salt sensitive. Micellar effects were analyzed quantitatively within the frame-work of the speudophase ion exchange model. All experimental data were fitted to this model which was used to predict the combined effects of pH and detergent concentration. Micelles increased the rate of OH- attack on cephaclor; most of the effect was due to the concentration of reagents in the micellar pseudophase. The intramolecular degradation was catalyzed 25-fold by micelles, and a working hypothesis to rationalize this effect is proposed. The results demonstrate that quantitative analysis can be utilized to assess and predict effects of detergents on drug stability.

The effect of nickel from soluble NiCl2 on Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, as well as on rate of nitro blue tetrazolium reduction, was studied in vitro since lipid peroxidation has been implicated in cell damage by nickel insoluble compounds, whose toxicity and carcinogenicity are well established. The physical and chemical nature of nickel compounds is one of the key determinations of its toxicity. Soluble nickel freely enter cells, but is just as readily excreted reducing the opportunity for production of lipid damage. Nickel from NiCl2 strongly activated SOD activity. In vitro addition of nickel chloride to a crude lung preparation altered the KM for SOD without changing the Vmax. Nickel chloride produced increased enzyme affinity to the substrate, because decreased (O2-) concentration that yields half-maximal velocity. The combination of nickel and SOD may contribute to stabilization of the particular conformation of SOD responsible for maximal catalytically activity.

Pre-resonant Raman effect of chromate ion, CrO2- 4, was observed in a metasilicate glass with molar composition 2Na2O · 1CaO · 3SiO2 containing 1.0 wt% of Cr2O3. Raman spectra were measured by the conventional 90° scattering geometry and by the microprobe Raman spectroscopic techniques. The presence of chromate ions in the glass is favoured by the glass composition and oxidizing conditions during the glass melting, and they are responsible for optical absorption bands at 370 and 250 nm. Raman spectrum of the undoped glass presents bands at 625, 860 and 980 cm-1, and the presence of chromate ions gives rise to additional bands at 365, 850 and a shoulder at 890 cm-1. An enhancement of the 850 cm-1 Raman band is observed with decreasing laser exciting wavelength. The exciting frequency dependence of the intensity of this band is discussed in terms of theoretical models given in the literature.

In this study, we show that safranine at the concentrations usually employed as a probe of mitochondrial membrane potential significantly protects against the oxidative damage of mitochondria induced by Fe(II)citrate. The effect of safranine was illustrated by experiments showing that this dye strongly inhibits both production of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances and membrane potential decrease when energized mitochondria were exposed to Fe(II)citrate in the presence of Ca 2+ ions. Similar results were obtained with the lipophylic compound trifluoperazine. It is proposed that, like trifluoperazine, safranine decreases the rate of lipid peroxidation due to its insertion in the membrane altering the physical state of the lipid phase.

The Arecaceae family comprises plants with economical importance in many Brazilian regions, for agricultural exploration or for landscaping. In great portion, species of this family present low germination velocity and percentage. This work meant to evaluate the germination and early development of seven palm species (Archontophoenix alexandrae H. Wendl. et Drude, Copernicia prunifera (Miller) H.E. Moore, Latania commersonii Gmel., Livistona chinensis R. Br., Syagrus campos-portoana Bondar, Syagrus coronata (Mart.) Beccari, Syagrus picrophylla Barb. Rod.), submitted to three kinds of seed bed plot coverings. Three 10 x 2 m seedbeds were built and filled with a mixture of sand, soil and chicken manure (1:3:0.5 proportion), where two lines were sown with each specie. On top of each seedbed, plastic covering and fifty percent screen were set allowing one third of the seedbed to full sunlight exposure. Seedbeds were irrigated by dripping system. All species had the same germination rate, regardless of the covering, by the end of the experiment (146 days after sowing), eventhough, A. alexandrae under plastic covering conditions, L. commersonii at full sunlight exposure and Syagrus campos-portoana under fifty percent shade, had reached that percentage around 51 days after sowing. The remaining species reached the greatest germination percentage earlier with some of the coverings, rather than at full sunlight exposure. For the studied conditions, covering type had no effect in leaf length and width. For leaf number, there was interaction between species x covering type for Livistona chinensis and Copernicia prunifera.

We estimate the cross sections for the production of resonances, pion pairs, and a central cluster of hadrons in peripheral heavy-ion collisions through two-photon and double-pomeron exchange, at energies that will be available at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The effect of the impact parameter in the diffractive reactions is introduced, and by imposing the condition for realistic peripheral collisions we verify that in the case of very heavy ions the pomeron-pomeron contribution is indeed smaller than the electromagnetic one. However, they give a non-negligible background in the collision of light ions. This diffractive background will be more important at RHIC than at LHC.

Thin polymer films were deposited from acetylene and argon mixtures by plasma immersion ion implantation and deposition. The effect of the pulse frequency, v, on molecular structure, optical gap, contact angle and hardness of the films was investigated. It was observed progressive dehydrogenation of the samples and increment in the concentration of unsaturated carbon bonds as the pulse frequency was increased. Film hardness and contact angle increased and optical gap decreased with v. These results are interpreted in terms of the chain unsaturation and crosslinking.

The local concentrations of chloride, Cl b, and bromide, Br b, in the interface of vesicles prepared with dioctadecyldimethylammonium chloride, DODAC, or bromide, DODAB, dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine, DPPC, dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine, DMPC, and mixtures of DMPC, DPPC, and DODAC were determined by chemical trapping by analyzing product yields from spontaneous dediazoniation of vesicle-bound 2,6-dimethyl-4-hexadecylbenzenediazonium ion. The values of Cl b and Br b in DODAC and DODAB vesicles increase with vesicle size, in agreement with previous data showing that counterion dissociation decreases with vesicle size. Addition of tetramethylammonium chloride displaces bromide from the DODAB vesicular interface. The value for the selectivity constant for Br/Cl exchange at the DODAB vesicular interface obtained by chemical trapping was ∼2.0, well within values obtained for comparable amphiphiles. In vesicles of DPPC the values of Cl b were very sensitive to the nature of the cation and decreased in the order Ca 2+ > Mg 2+ > Li + > Na + > K + = Cs + = Rb + ≥ +. The effect of the cation becomes more important as temperature increases above the phase transition temperature, T m, of the lipid. The values of Cl b increased sigmoidally with the mol % of DODAC in vesicles prepared with DODAC/lipid mixtures. In sonicated vesicles prepared with DODAC and DMPC (or DPPC), the values of Cl b reach local concentrations measured for the pure amphiphile at 80 mol % DODAC. These results represent the first extensive study of local concentration of ions determined directly by chemical trapping in vesicles prepared with lipids, synthetic ampliiphiles, and their mixtures.

Objective. The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the interaction between two sources of fluoride (restorative systems and dentifrices) in inhibiting artificial root caries development. Methods. One hundred and eighty tooth segments were embedded in polyester resin, and sanded flat. Cylindrical cavities 1.0 mm-deep and 1.5 mm-diameter were prepared in root dentin and randomly restored by fluoride-containing restorative systems: Ketac-fil/Espe (Ke), Fuji II LC/GC Corp (Fj), F2000/3M (F2), Surefil/Dentsply (Su) or a control: Filtek Z250/3M (Z2). Ten experimental groups were made to test the association among the five restorative systems and two dentifrices: with F - (Sensodyne Baking Soda) or without F- (Sensodyne Original) (n = 18). After surface polishing, a 1 mm-wide margin around the restorations was demarcated and initial dentin surface Knoop microhardness values (KHNi) were obtained. The specimens were submitted to a pH-cycling model, and to applications of slurries of dentifrice. Afterwards the final dentin surface Knoop microhardness values (KHNf) were measured. Results. The differences between KHNi and KHNf, and the covariate KHNi were considered by the ANCOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). The interaction between restorative system and dentifrice was statistically significant (p = 0.0026). All restorative systems provided some protection against artificial caries challenge when associated with the fluoride-containing dentifrice treatment. The means (standard deviation) of reductions in Knoop hardness values for systems associated with the fluoride-containing dentifrice were: Ke: 40.0(1.02)a, Fj: 41.9(1.02)b, F2: 43.3(1.04)c, Su: 43.5(1.00)c, Z2: 44.0(1.02)c; and with the non-fluoride-containing dentifrice were: Ke: 42.9(1.02)a, Fj: 44.7(1.01)b, F2: 45.2(1.09)bc, Su: 46.0(0.99)c, Z2: 46.6(0.99)c (statistical differences were expressed by different letters). Conclusion. The cariostatic effect shown by the fluoride-containing dentifrice could enhance that shown by Ketac-fil and Fuji II LC, and could mask that shown by F2000. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd.
