Anemia is a prevalent comorbidity and marker of a poorer prognosis in patients with heart failure (HF). Its clinical relevance, as well as its pathophysiology and the clinical management of these patients are important subjects in the specialized literature. In the present review, we describe the current concepts on the pathophysiology of anemia in HF, its diagnostic criteria, and the recommendations for iron supplementation. Also, we make a critical analysis of the major studies showing evidences on the benefits of this supplementation. The four main components of anemia are addressed: chronic disease, dilutional, renal and malabsorption. In patients with HF, the diagnostic criteria are the same as those used in the general population: serum ferritin levels lower than 30 mcg/L in patients without kidney diseases and lower than 100 mcg/L or serum ferritin levels between 100-299 mcg/L with transferring saturation lower than 20% in patients with chronic kidney diseases. Finally, the therapeutic possibilities for anemia in this specific patient population are discussed.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) treatment on aspects of renal function, serum profile, total blood count parameters and clinical condition of health or chronic kidney disease (CKD) dogs. The evaluations were done before, during and after the administration of DMSO 10% at a dose of 0.5g kg-1, each 24h, for three days. DMSO resulted in some adverse effects in both healthy and CKD dogs, however the effects were more frequent and worse in CKD dogs. Despite these adverse effects, both groups don't have contraindications to use the drug in a short time. The severity of adverse effects related to the DMSO and its possible association with death in stage 4 CKD dogs, are contraindications for the drug in this group of patients.

Systhemic lupus erythematous is a imunomediated disorder witch affects primarly dogs between two and nine years. Clinical manifestations are very diverse, including renal signs, that may lead to chronic renal disease, and dermatologic and joint sings. Systhemic lupus erythematous diagnostic is a challange to the clinician, due to its diverse list of differecial diagnoses and its low availability of specific tests. The treatment consists of corticosteroids and imunomodulators, and supportive therapy that inhibits the progression of the disease. Monitoring the animal with systhemic lupus erythematous is important, due to its recurrent caracteristic
