The electrochemical oxidation of (benzylideneacetone)dicarbonyl(phosphine)iron(0) and benzylideneacetone)dicarbonyl(phosphite)iron(0) complexes was studied by cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential electrolysis in 0.5 M NaClO4 (dimethyl formamide). The results suggest that the electrode process involves a complicated mechanism, the species formed in the first oxidation step being highly unstable and its decomposition producing free benzylideneacetone, free phosphine or phosphite, solvated iron(II) species and carbon monoxide which adsorbs on the platinum electrode. A linear relationship between E(p/2)ox and the ligand parameter P(L) was obtained with E(s) = 0.41 V and beta = 0.964, where E(s) and beta-denote electron-richness and polarizability of the metal centre, respectively.

A new palladium(II) complex with methionine sulfoxide was synthesized and characterized by a set of chemical and spectroscopic techniques. Elemental and mass spectrometry analyses of the solid complex fit to the composition [Pd(C5H10NO3S)(2)]center dot H2O. C-13 NMR, [H-1-N-15] NMR and infrared spectra indicate coordination of the amino acid to Pd(II) through the carboxylate and amino groups in a square planar geometry. The complex is soluble in water.Biological activity was evaluated by cytotoxic analysis using HeLa cells. Determination of cell death was assessed using a tetrazolium salt colorimetric assay, which reflects the cells viability. After incubation for 48 h, 20% of cell death was achieved at a concentration of 200 mu mol L-1 of the complex. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

An analytical method for the determination of aldicarb, and its two major metabolites, aldicarb sulfoxide and aldicarb sulfone in fruits and vegetables is described. Briefly the method consisted of the use of a methanolic extraction, liquid-liquid extraction followed by solid-phase extraction clean-up. Afterwards, the final extract is analyzed by liquid chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry (LC-APCI-MS). The specific fragment ion corresponding to [M-74](+) and the protonated molecular [M+K](+) ion were used for the unequivocal determination of aldicarb and its two major metabolites. The analytical performance of the proposed method and the results achieved were compared with those obtained using the common analytical method involving LC with post-column fluorescence detection (FL). The limits of detection varied between 0.2 and 1.3 ng but under LC-FL were slightly lower than when using LC-APCI-MS. However both methods permitted one to achieve the desired sensitivity for analyzing aldicarb and its metabolites in vegetables. The kinetics of the hexacyanoferrate(III)-N,N′-dimethyl-4,4′-bipyridinium radical (MV+) reaction was studied by a laser flash photolysis technique. The radical was generated, in the presence of Fe(CN)6 3-, by quenching the excited state *Ru(bpy)3 2+ with MV2+. The second-order rate constant for the Fe(CN)6 3--MV+ reaction is (7.6 ± 0.5) × 109 M-1 s-1 at 23°C and ionic strength 0.10 M. Comparison with the rate constants calculated for the diffusion-controlled reaction (4.7 × 109 M-1 s-1) and the activation-controlled reaction (5.2 × 1012 M-1 s-1, on the basis of self-exchange rate constants of 8.0 × 105 M-1 s-1 and 1.9 × 104 M-1 s-1 for the MV2+/+ and Fe(CN)6 3-/4- couples, respectively) leads to the conclusion that the Fe(CN)6 3--MV+ reaction is diffusion controlled. The rate constant for the Fe(CN)6-MV2+ reaction, calculated from the rate constant for the Fe(CN)6 3--MV+ reaction and the appropriate equilibrium constant, is 2.4 × 10-5 M-1 s-1 at 23°C and ionic strength 0.10 M. Microscopic reversibility considerations require that the Fe(CN)6 4--MV2+ reaction be controlled by the dissociation of the successor complex Fe(CN)6 3-|MV+. The thermal and optical electron transfers in the ion pair Fe(CN)6 4-|MV2+ and in related systems are analyzed and discussed. © 1982 American Chemical Society.

Methionine sulfoxide complexes of iron(II) and copper(II) were synthesized and characterized by chemical and spectroscopic techniques. Elemental and atomic absorption analyses fit the compositions K2[Fe(metSO) 2]SO4 · H2O and [Cu(metSO)2] · H2O. Electronic absorption spectra of the complexes are typical of octahedral geometries. Infrared spectroscopy suggests coordination of the ligand to the metal through the carboxylate and sulfoxide groups. An EPR spectrum of the Cu(II) complex indicates tetragonal distortion of its octahedral symmetry. 57Fe Mössbauer parameters are also consistent with octahedral stereochemistry for the iron(II) complex. The complexes are very soluble in water.

A new series of complexes of general formulae [PdX2(tmdmPz)] {X = Cl (1), Br (2), I (3), SCN (4); tmdmPz = N′-methyl-3,5-dimethyl-1- thiocarbamoylpyrazole} have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductivities, IR, 1H and 13C{ 1H} NMR spectroscopy. In these complexes, the tmdmPz coordinates to Pd(II) center as a neutral N,S-chelating ligand. The geometries of the complexes have been optimized with the DFT method. Cytotoxicity evaluation against LM3 (mammary adenocarcinoma) and LP07 (lung adenocarcinoma) cell lines indicated that complexes 1-4 were more active than cisplatin. The binding of the complexes with a purine base (guanosine) was investigated by 1H NMR and mass spectrometry, showing that the coordination of guanosine occurs through N7. Electrophoretic DNA migration studies showed that all of them modify the DNA tertiary structure. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Mixed calcium and copper oxalates, with different proportions of Ca2+ and Cu2+ ions, were precipitated by dimethyl oxalate hydrolysis in homogeneous solution. The compounds were evaluated by means of scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, thermogravimetry (TG), and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The results suggested quantitative precipitation without solid solution formation. From the TG and DTA curves, it was possible to evaluate the Ca2+ ion proportion in the solid phase and to confirm the precipitation of the individual species.

Dioctadecyl-dimethyl-ammonium bromide (DODAB) vesicles can be characterized by their differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermograms comprised of two endotherms at T (s) a parts per thousand 36 A degrees C and T (m) a parts per thousand 45 A degrees C in the heating, ascribed respectively to the subgel-to-gel and gel-to-liquid crystalline transitions, and two exotherms at T'(m) a parts per thousand 40 A degrees C and T'(s) a parts per thousand 16 A degrees C in the cooling, ascribed respectively to the liquid crystalline-to-gel and gel-to-subgel transitions. It has been reported but not proved that the T (m)-transitions, the T'(m)-transitions, the T (s)-transitions, and the T'(s)-transitions are reverse to each other, displaying hystheresis Delta T (m) a parts per thousand 5 A degrees C and Delta T (s) a parts per thousand 20-25 A degrees C, respectively. By investigating the effects of the initial scanning temperature (T (i)) on the transition enthalpies (Delta H (m), Delta H (s), Delta H'(m) and Delta H'(s)), we have seen that these transitions are the reverse to each other and display different kinetics.

A multicomponent reaction of β-naphthol, dimethyl malonate, and aromatic aldehydes in the presence of NbCl5 as promoter is described. Under similar conditions, aromatic aldehydes with different substituents exhibited different behaviors than β-naphthol and dimethyl malonate. In these MCRs, 4-aryl-3,4-dihydrobenzo[f]coumarins are obtained as the major products (41–93%) and 14-aryl-14H-dibenzo[a,j]xanthenes as the minor products (1–38%).

Um ensaio de campo foi conduzido em 1994/95, na Fazenda de Ensino e Pesquisa da Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias (UNESP) de Jaboticabal, SP, sendo os objetivos do trabalho comparar aspectos biológicos e produtivos de nove diferentes híbridos de milho, resultantes da aplicação da dose de 80 g.ha-1 de nicosulfuron {2- [[[[4,6-dimetoxi-2-pirimidina) amina] carboxil] amina] sulfonil] -N,N-dimetil-3-piridinacarboxiamida} em relação a plantas não tratadas. Verificou-se que o herbicida afetou significativamente alguns dos aspectos biológicos estudados (altura de plantas e de espigas, número de folhas, comprimento e largura de folhas e estande final) e não afetou os relacionados com a posição relativa das espigas, o diâmetro do colmo, as porcentagens de acamamento e de quebramento. A produtividade estimada dos híbridos tratados não foi afetada pela aplicação do produto, com exceção da estimada para o híbrido HT 2X.
