Objectives: To evaluate the antimicrobial activity of Arctium lappa L. extract on Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis, Streptococcus mutans, Candida albicans, C. tropicalis and C. glabrata. In addition, the cytotoxicity of this extract was analyzed on macrophages (RAW 264.7).Design: By broth microdilution method, different concentrations of the extract (250-0.4 mg/mL) were used in order to determine the minimum microbicidal concentration (MMC) in planktonic cultures and the most effective concentration was used on biofilms on discs made of acrylic resin. The cytotoxicity A. lappa L. extract MMC was evaluated on RAW 264.7 by MTT assay and the quantification of IL-1 beta and TNF-alpha by ELISA.Results: The most effective concentration was 250 mg/mL and also promoted significant reduction (log(10)) in the biofilms of S. aureus (0.438 +/- 0.269), S. epiderrnidis (0.377 +/- 0.298), S. mutans (0.244 +/- 0.161) and C. albicans (0.746 +/- 0.209). Cell viability was similar to 100%. The production of IL-beta was similar to the control group (p > 0.05) and there was inhibition of TNF-alpha (p < 0.01).Conclusions: A. lappa L. extract was microbicidal for all the evaluated strains in planktonic cultures, microbiostatic for biofilms and not cytotoxic to the macrophages. This study aimed to investigate the antitumor and cytotoxicity activities of Kielmeyera coriacea and Pyrostegia venusta extracts. Therefore, the hydroalcoholic extracts of P. venusta flowers and K. coriacea leaves were prepared. The extracts were evaporated and the dry extracts were diluted at concentrations of 1.0, 0.1, 0.01 and 0.001 mg/ml for carrying out the bioassays. Artemia salina eggs were incubated in saline solution at 28°C for 24 h. The larvae were treated with different extracts concentrations and the mortality was evaluated after 24 and 48 h. Five discs of potato were placed in Petri dishes and 50 μl of inoculum of Agrobacterium tumefaciens were added to it at 28°C for 24 h incubation. So, 50 μl of the extracts in different concentrations were added. Positive and negative controls were made. The P. venusta and K. coriacea extracts did not show statistically significant acute toxicity. K. coriacea extract showed (mean% of tumor ± standard deviation) 15.30 ± 3.24, 6.34 ± 3.82, 7.57 ± 2.92 and 5.77 ± 2.85 and P. venusta showed 25.82 ± 5.15, 38.40 ± 8.28, 15.75 ± 4.44 and 13.38 ± 7.92, with their concentrations for the antitumor bioassay, and the positive control showed 25.80 ± 6.14. According to the obtained results it was established that the K. coriacea and P. venusta extracts showed antitumor activity but did not show significant cytotoxic activity in A. salina test.

Angioinvasion/angiodestruction has been reported in a small subset of primary cutaneous anaplastic large-cell lymphomas (PCALCL). Recently, PCALCL with angioinvasive features and cytotoxic phenotype has been characterized as a variant associated with good clinical outcomes despite worrisome histopathologic features. We report a case of PCALCL with angioinvasive features and cytotoxic phenotype associated with reparative changes on the wall of medium-sized vessels involved by the neoplasm, including intimal fibroblastic proliferation and luminal obliteration. This vascular pattern, although previously unreported in PCALCL, is in accordance with the indolent behavior observed in this entity and provides a further link with lymphomatoid papulosis type E.

Acrocomia aculeata (Jacq.) Lodd. ex Mart. is a plant species commonly used as a foodstuff and also for treating diseases, since it contains high concentrations of antioxidant compounds and monounsaturated fatty acids. Considering its ethnopharmacological relevance, the aim of the present study was to assess the cytotoxic, genotoxic, and mutagenic effects of an oil extracted from the pulp of A. aculeata (OPAC) in rats. In addition, a chromatographic characterization of the fatty acids present in OPAC was performed. Male and female Wistar rats were treated orally with 125, 250, 500, 1000, or 2000 mg/kg/body weight OPAC. The effects of OPAC ingestion were determined by performing the comet assay and micronucleus test. The comet assay data demonstrated that OPAC did not increase the frequency or rate of DNA damage in groups treated with any of the concentrations assessed compared to that in the negative control group. In the micronucleus test, the animals treated did not exhibit any cytotoxic or mutagenic changes in peripheral blood erythrocytes. The results demonstrated that OPAC did not exhibit cytotoxic, genotoxic, or mutagenic effects in Wistar rats, thereby increasing the evidence for the safety of oil extracted from this plant.
