The object of this work was to study the dynamics of evaporation in the Itumbiara reservoir, located in Central Brazil, using MODIS-derived water surface temperature (product MOD11A1) and meteorological data acquired over the water surface. The evaporation rates were derived from latent heat flux, estimated through a mass transfer model. The estimates were carried out for the period between 1/1/2010 and 31/12/2010. The results showed that evaporation rate tends to increase from January to September and then decrease from September to December. The evaporation rate reached values near 20 mm day-1 in Itumbiara reservoir during the dry season in 2010. The mean evaporation rate for the wet season was 3.66 mm day-1 and 8.25 mm day-1 for the dry season. The total water volume evaporated from Itumbiara reservoir during 2010 was estimated at about 1.7 billion m³ (2,300 mm) which represents 10% of total reservoir volume. The results suggest that advection is the main transport mechanism which drives the evaporation in Itumbiara. The convective processes contribute secondarily to evaporation in Itumbiara reservoir.

This work aims to study the structural characteristics of silica gels obtained from the acid hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) in water solutions with different concentrations of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The structural characteristics were studied in stages ranging from the wet gel to the dry stages of the gels (aerogels and xerogels). Aerogels were obtained by ambient pressure drying (APD) after silylation process using trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS) as silylating agent. Xerogels were obtained by conventional evaporating the liquid phase from non silylated gels. The samples were characterized by nitrogen adsorption and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The structure of the wet gels and of the aerogels prepared with the surfactant exhibited characteristics of mass-fractal structures with fractal dimension D in the range 2.1-2.2 for the wet gels and 2.3-2.4 for the aerogels. The characteristic size of the fractal domain reduces while the size a0 of the primary silica particle composing the fractal structure increases with the drying of the gels, in a process in which share of the porosity is eliminated. Aerogels exhibited typical values for the specific surface of 900 m2g-1 and of 3.5 cm3.g-1 for the total pore volume. These values are correspondingly comparable to those of the aerogels prepared by supercritical drying, since the silylation process replaces hydrophilic –OH groups by hydrophobic –Si-R3 ones, inhibiting the porosity elimination on drying. The silica particle size also increases lightly with the silylation because the attachment of the –Si-R3 groups on the silica surface. The pore size distribution curves of the aerogels are similar for all samples exhibiting a maximum in around 40 nm, independent the concentration of surfactant. The Mesozoic acid volcanism of the Paraná-Etendeka Province can be considered as one of the biggest events of its kind in the Earth's surface, and its study have attracted special interest in characterizing the end of magmatism that preceded the rupture process and the formation of continental Africa and South America Although significant, the acid volcanism featuring Members Chapecó Palmas and Serra Geral Formation represents only 2.5% of the total generated by the magmatic rocks and perhaps therefore the existing literature on these rocks is well less significant than that on the basalts. However, there are still aspects still unclear about the origin and evolution of these rocks in relation to the associated basalts. Thus, two profiles were selected, called RA and TA, which be a systematic collection of samples from the base where the Botucatu Formation sandstones occur at the top, where they observe Palmas acid rock type. These samples should be analyzed for major, minor and trace elements and treated in specific diagrams to define the vertical variation lithochemistry and their possible relationships with the associated basalts

The substitution of diesel by biodiesel meets the current scenario to increase the consumption of alternative energy sources promoting sustainable development of a country. However, the production of biodiesel concurrently generates the formation of glycerine in the process is a by-product. The main application of glycerine is in the food industry, cosmetics, soaps, pharmaceuticals, among others, but these segments are not capable of absorbing the generated volume of glycerine, whereas the total volume of the biodiesel produced about 10% correspond to glycerine. Glycerine obtained from the transesterification reaction (necessary for production of biodiesel) triglycerides and alcohol contains certain impurities such as water, salts, esters, alcohol, and residual oil, which decrease the value. Thus, the purification process or the direct use of glycerine become essential to make it competitive biodiesel production process. This work aims to evaluate the different processes of purification and the use of glycerine obtained as by-product in the production of biodiesel. The research was theoretical, based on technical articles and theses published on this subject, and from these databases was established a summary of the most important processes

To establish benchmarks and study some sonographic characteristics of the thyroid gland in a group of euthyroid children aged up to 5 years as compared with age-matched children with congenital hypothyroidism. Thirty-six children (17 female and 19 male) aged between 2 months and 5 years were divided into two groups - 23 euthyroid children and 13 children with congenital hypothyroidism - and were called to undergo ultrasonography. In the group of euthyroid children (n = 23), mean total volume of the thyroid gland was 1.12 mL (minimum, 0.39 mL; maximum, 2.72 mL); a homogeneous gland was found in 17 children (73.91%) and 6 children (26.08%) had a heterogeneous gland. In the group of children with congenital hypothyroidism (n = 13), mean total volume of the thyroid gland was 2.73 mL (minimum, 0.20 mL; maximum, 11.00 mL). As regards thyroid location, 3 patients (23.07%) had ectopic thyroid, and 10 (69.23%) had topic thyroid, and out of the latter, 5 had a homogeneous gland (50%) and 5, a heterogeneous gland (50%). In the group with congenital hypothyroidism, 6 (46.15%) children had etiological diagnosis of dyshormoniogenesis, 3 (23.07%), of ectopic thyroid, and 4 (30.76%), of thyroid hypoplasia. Thyroid ultrasonography is a noninvasive imaging method, widely available, easy to perform and for these reasons could, and should, be performed at any time, including at birth, with no preparation or treatment discontinuation, to aid in the early etiological definition of congenital hypothyroidism.

Among the numerous possibilities of physical exercise, it has been recommended that stretching routines should be incorporated into training programs focused on the elderly population, and that these routines should be preferentially performed on the same strength or aerobic training session. However, studies have shown that muscle strength production can be acutely impaired if it is preceded by static stretching exercises (AE). Although there seems to be a relationship between the number of stretched muscles and strength response, no studies were found examining such relationship in the same study, simultaneously. Thus, the objective of this study is to analyze the acute effect of stretching of different muscle groups on strength performance in older women. Nineteen physically active older women participated in the study (67.8 ± 5.3 years, 68.9 ± 12.4 kg, 157.2 ± 6.4 cm)-usar ponto final em inglês e não vírgula. The participants visited the lab for six consecutive days, three of which were intended to familiarization. Over the next three days, all the participants performed the experimental conditions: control; quadriceps stretching alone and complete stretching, involving the major extensors muscle groups of knees and hips. Both the two stretching conditions were realized with three series of 30s (total volume of 90 seconds for each exercise). All experimental conditions was be performed with an interval of at least 24 hours and order of execution was be randomized. The force transducer was connected to a leg press apparatus, where the isometric force time curve and electromyographic activity of the vastus medial and vastus lateralis were recorded. Measurements were registered immediately after each experimental condition, during five seconds. The sol-gel process is a method for obtaining vitreous or vitro-ceramic materials which, are prepared a sol and by drying the liquid phase. This technique has been used extensively for the preparation of glassy gels, films, fibers and particles from the hydrolysis and polycondensation reactions of metal alkoxides. The usual methods for drying are: evaporation drying (xerogels), freeze drying (criogéis) and via supercritical CO2 extraction (aerogels). In the present work, we studied the preparation of silica gels by the sol-gel process from the hydrolysis of alkoxides tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTS). The hydrolysis was promoted from GPTS and TEOS in proportion (4: 1) under acidic conditions. The hydrolysis reaction was promoted inside a Becker at room temperature. After hydrolyses the prepared sol had pH 2, and kept under mechanical agitation for a period of 1 hour. In order to accelerate the polycondensation reaction, the pH was corrected to a value near 5 by slowly adding NH4OH. Then the sols were leaked in sealed polycarbonate containers and maintained for 20 days at 40°C for gelation. Silica aerogels were prepared via supercritical CO2 extraction of the wet gel at temperature and pressure higher than 31°C and 74 atm, in an autoclave specially developed for the process. The structural characteristics were studied in the dry gel (aerogel). Aerogels were then characterized by nitrogen adsorption and small angle light scattering. The nitrogen adsorption data were analyzed for the determination of the BET specific surface (SBET), the total pore volume Vp, the pore mean size (lP=4Vp/SBET), the particle mean size (lS) and the pore size distribution (PSD). And the data from small angle light scattering were analyzed to determine the correlation function (γ'), the area per unit volume (S/V), average pore size (l ) and the average particle size...

Um felino macho, sem raça definida, pesando 3,6 kg com 10 anos de idade foi atendido no Hospital Veterinário “Luiz Quintiliano de Oliveira”, apresentando obstrução uretral com indicação para uretrostomia perineal. Ao exame físico geral, observou-se freqüência cardíaca (FC) de 240 bat.min-1, taquipnéia, temperatura retal (TR) de 38,4oC, mucosas normocoradas, tempo de preenchimento capilar de um segundo e desidratação de aproximadamente 5%. Como medicação pré-anestésica, administrou-se cetamina (6mg.kg-1), midazolam (0,15mg.kg-1) e morfina (0,15mg.kg-1) pela via intramuscular. A veia cefálica foi canulada com cateter 24G para administração de Ringer com Lactato de sódio (10mL.kg-1.h-1) e a indução foi realizada por meio da administração de propofol (4,4mg.kg-1) pela via intravenosa. Seguiu-se a intubação orotraqueal com sonda no 4,0 conectando-se a um circuito sem reinalação de Baraka, sendo a manutenção anestésica efetuada com isofluorano em fluxo diluente de oxigênio a 100%. Em seguida, realizou-se a técnica de anestesia peridural com o paciente em posição esternal e membros pélvicos estendidos cranialmente. Após localização do espaço entre as vértebras L7 e S1, introduziu-se uma agulha 13x4,5 percutaneamente até atingir o espaço peridural, administrando-se morfina (0,1mg.kg-1), fentanil (3mcg.kg-1) e lidocaína a 1% com vasoconstritor (1,8mg.kg-1), perfazendo um volume total de 0,25mL.kg-1. Durante o procedimento anestésico, monitorou-se a FC, freqüência respiratória (f), pressão arterial sistólica (PAS), pressão parcial de dióxido de carbono ao final da expiração (ETCO2), temperatura esofágica (TE), saturação periférica da hemoglobina (SpO2) e plano anestésico. O tempo total de anestesia e cirurgia foi de 65 e 50 minutos, respectivamente. O plano anestésico manteve-se estável, sem a necessidade de resgate analgésico. A SpO2, concentração de isofluorano e TE mantiveram-se em 97±2%, 1,3±0,1% e 36,7±0,4oC, respectivamente. Durante a anestesia, observou-se um momento de hipotensão, provavelmente devido ao bloqueio simpático decorrente da anestesia peridural. Tal evento foi tratado com bolus de solução de Ringer com Lactato de sódio (5mL.kg-1) promovendo o retorno da PAS aos valores de normalidade. A recuperação anestésica do animal foi isenta de complicações inerentes ao procedimento anestésico. O emprego de opióides pela via peridural é recomendado em procedimentos cirúrgicos abdominal, torácico, genito-urinário e ortopédico, principalmente em pacientes de alto risco, obesos e idosos. Em humanos, a associação da morfina e fentanil pela via peridural demonstra analgesia pós-operatória superior à promovida pelo uso isolado da morfina. Conclui-se que na espécie felina, a associação de morfina e fentanil pela via peridural pode ser uma boa alternativa para realização de protocolos de anestesia balanceada para uretrostomia.

Foi atendido no Hospital Veterinário “Luiz Quintiliano de Oliveira”, o felino Nick, SRD, de quatro meses de idade, pesando 700 gramas, com histórico de trauma por arranhadura em bulbo ocular esquerdo. Ao exame físico específico, evidenciou-se úlcera profunda e prolapso de íris, sendo então indicada a enucleação. Ao exame físico geral, observou-se freqüência cardíaca (FC) de 160 batimentos.min-1, frequência respiratória (f) de 80 movimentos.min-1, tempo de preenchimento capilar menor do que dois segundos, temperatura retal (TR) de 39,2oC e mucosas normocoradas. Como medicação pré-anestésica, empregou-se acepromazina (0,04 mg.kg-1) e metadona (0,3 mg.kg-1), administradas pela via intramuscular. A veia femoral esquerda foi cateterizada com cateter 24G para administração de Ringer com Lactato de sódio (10 mL.kg-1.h- 1 ). A indução foi realizada por máscara facial tendo-se como agente o isofluorano em fluxo diluente de 100 mL.kg-1.min-1 de oxigênio a 100%, seguida de intubação orotraqueal com sonda n o 2,5 sem cuff. Seguiu-se a manutenção anestésica com a mesma mistura da indução, administrada por meio de circuito anestésico sem reinalação de gases, do tipo Baraka, mantendose o paciente sob ventilação assistida. Ato contínuo, realizou-se a técnica anestésica peribulbar de punção única inferior, utilizando-se lidocaína 2% com vasoconstritor (3mg.kg-1) associada a bupivacaína 0,5% sem vasoconstritor (0,8mg.kg-1), perfazendo um volume total de 0,3ml.kg-1 . Uma agulha 13x4,5 foi introduzida em todo o seu comprimento com o bisel voltado para a órbita, no terço lateral do fórnice conjuntival inferior da órbita esquerda, administrando-se a associação dos agentes anestésicos locais, seguida de compressão manual da área para facilitar a difusão dos mesmos. Durante o procedimento anestésico, realizou-se a monitoração da FC, f, pressão arterial sistólica (PAS), TR e saturação periférica da hemoglobina (SpO2). O tempo total de anestesia e cirurgia foi de 30 e 20 minutos, respectivamente, e a SpO2, concentração de isofluorano e TR mantiveram-se em 99±1%, 1,7±0,8% e 37,4±1,5oC, respectivamente. O plano anestésico manteve-se estável, sem a necessidade de resgate analgésico. Não houve a ocorrência de reflexo óculo-cardíaco (ROC) frente à manipulação do nervo óptico, o que pode ser atribuída provavelmente ao bloqueio peribulbar. A anestesia regional é frequentemente empregada para cirurgias oftálmicas em humanos, como a facoemulsificação, sendo que o manejo anestésico pode contribuir para o sucesso do procedimento. Pode-se concluir que, também na espécie felina, o bloqueio peribulbar pode ser uma boa alternativa para a realização de protocolos de anestesia balanceada para procedimentos oftálmicos.
