OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the time spent for direct (DBB - direct bracket bonding) and indirect (IBB - indirect bracket bonding) bracket bonding techniques. The time length of laboratorial (IBB) and clinical steps (DBB and IBB) as well as the prevalence of loose bracket after a 24-week follow-up were evaluated. METHODS: Seventeen patients (7 men and 10 women) with a mean age of 21 years, requiring orthodontic treatment were selected for this study. A total of 304 brackets were used (151 DBB and 153 IBB). The same bracket type and bonding material were used in both groups. Data were submitted to statistical analysis by Wilcoxon non-parametric test at 5% level of significance. RESULTS: Considering the total time length, the IBB technique was more time-consuming than the DBB (p < 0.001). However, considering only the clinical phase, the IBB took less time than the DBB (p < 0.001). There was no significant difference (p = 0.910) for the time spent during laboratorial positioning of the brackets and clinical session for IBB in comparison to the clinical procedure for DBB. Additionally, no difference was found as for the prevalence of loose bracket between both groups. CONCLUSION: the IBB can be suggested as a valid clinical procedure since the clinical session was faster and the total time spent for laboratorial positioning of the brackets and clinical procedure was similar to that of DBB. In addition, both approaches resulted in similar frequency of loose bracket.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) the remaining adhesive interface after debonding orthodontic attachments bonded to bovine teeth with the use of hydrophilic and hydrophobic primers under different dental substrate moisture conditions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty mandibular incisors were divided into four groups (n=5). In Group I, bracket bonding was performed with Transbond MIP hydrophilic primer and Transbond XT adhesive paste applied to moist substrate, and in Group II a bonding system comprising Transbond XT hydrophobic primer and adhesive paste was applied to moist substrate. Brackets were bonded to the specimens in Groups III and IV using the same adhesive systems, but on dry dental enamel. The images were qualitatively assessed by SEM. RESULTS: The absence of moisture in etched enamel enabled better interaction between bonding materials and the adamantine structure. The hydrophobic primer achieved the worst micromechanical interlocking results when applied to a moist dental structure, whereas the hydrophilic system proved versatile, yielding acceptable results in moist conditions and excellent interaction in the absence of contamination. CONCLUSION: The authors assert that the best condition for the application of primers to dental enamel occurs in the absence of moisture.

Objectives. To compare three different designs for measuring the bond strength between Y-TZP ceramic and a composite material, before and after ceramic surface treatment, evaluating the influence of the size of the adhesive interface for each design.Methods. 'Macro'tensile, microtensile, 'macro'shear, microshear, 'macro'push-out, and micropush-out tests were carried out. Two Y-TZP surface treatments were evaluated: silanization (sil) and tribochemical silica coating (30 mu m silica-modified Al2O3 particles + silanization) (TBS). Failure mode analysis of tested samples was also performed. Results. Both the surface treatment and the size of the bonded interface significantly affected the results (p = 0.00). Regardless of the type of surface treatment, the microtensile and microshear tests had higher values than their equivalent "macro" tests. However, the push-out test showed the highest values for the "macro" test. The tensile tests showed the greatest variability in results. The tribochemical silica coating method significantly increased bond strength for all tests.Significance. Different test designs can change the outcome for Y-TZP/cement interfaces, in terms of mean values and reliability (variability). The 'micro'tests expressed higher bond strengths than their equivalent 'macro'tests, with the exception of the push-out test (macro > micro). (C) 2015 Academy of Dental Materials. The objective of this study was to assess penetration of adhesive material in enamel bleached with 35% hydrogen peroxide using optical polarized light microscopy. Extracted human teeth were randomly assigned to 5 groups, each representing a specific time interval between bleaching and the application of an adhesive material. They were designated as: (TC) the control group-restorations in unbleached teeth; (T0) comprising restorations carried out immediately after bleaching; (T7) comprising restorations 7 days after bleaching; (T14) comprising restorations 14 days after bleaching; and (T21) comprising restorations 21 days after bleaching. Length of resin tags was measured with an Axiophot photomicroscope at a x 400 magnification, and the results subjected to an ANOVA for a comparison between groups, with a p value of < 0.05. Differences between the groups were verified using a Tukey test at a confidence level of 5%. The specimens in the control group (TC) and experimental groups T7, T14 and T21 showed better penetration of adhesive material into enamel in comparison with experimental group T0. This suggests that a gap of at least 7 days should be left between bleaching enamel with 35% hydrogen peroxide and placing adhesive bonding agents and undertaking resin composite restoration work.

Aim: This study evaluated the effect of light-activation on the antibacterial activity of dentin bonding systems. Methods: Inocula of Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus casei cultures were spread on the surface of BHI agar and the materials were applied and subjected or not to light-activation. Zones of bacterial growth inhibition around the discs were measured. Results: Excite, Single Bond and the bond of Clearfil SE Bond (SE) and Clearfil Protect Bond (CP) did not show any antibacterial activity. The strongest inhibitory activity was observed for the primers of CP and Prompt (PR) against S. mutans and the primers of SE and PB against L. casei. Conclusion: Light-activation significantly reduced or suppressed the antibacterial activity of the initially active uncured dentin bonding systems.
