Nanotechnology-based drug delivery systems and herbal medicines: a review

Herbal medicines have been widely used around the world since ancient times. The advancement of phytochemical and phytopharmacological sciences has enabled elucidation of the composition and biological activities of several medicinal plant products. The effectiveness of many species of medicinal plants depends on the supply of active compounds. Most of the biologically active constituents of extracts, such as flavonoids, tannins, and terpenoids, are highly soluble in water, but have low absorption, because they are unable to cross the lipid membranes of the cells, have excessively high molecular size, or are poorly absorbed, resulting in loss of bioavailability and efficacy. Some extracts are not used clinically because of these obstacles. It has been widely proposed to combine herbal medicine with nanotechnology, because nano-structured systems might be able to potentiate the action of plant extracts, reducing the required dose and side effects, and improving activity. Nanosystems can deliver the active constituent at a sufficient concentration during the entire treatment period, directing it to the desired site of action. Conventional treatments do not meet these requirements. The purpose of this study is to review nanotechnology- based drug delivery systems and herbal medicines.

Laparoscopic Heller Myotomy and Fundoplication in Patients with Chagas' Disease Achalasia and Massively Dilated Esophagus

Laparoscopic Heller myotomy and fundoplication is considered today the treatment of choice for achalasia. The optimal treatment for end-stage achalasia with esophageal dilation is still controversial. This multicenter and retrospective study aims to evaluate the outcome of laparoscopic Heller myotomy in patients with a massively dilated esophagus. Eleven patients (mean age, 56 years; 6 men) with massively dilated esophagus (esophageal diameter greater than 10 cm) underwent a laparoscopic Heller myotomy and anterior fundoplication between 2000 and 2009 at three different institutions. Preoperative workup included upper endoscopy, esophagram, and esophageal manometry in all patients. Average follow-up was 31.5 months (range, 3 to 60 months). Two patients (18%) had severe dysphagia, four patients (36%) had mild and occasional dysphagia to solid food, and five patients (45%) were asymptomatic. All patients gained or kept body weight, except for the two patients with severe dysphagia. Of the two patients with severe dysphagia, one underwent esophageal dilatation and the other a laparoscopic esophagectomy. They are both doing well. Heller myotomy relieves dysphagia in the majority of patients even when the esophagus is massively dilated.

Antimicrobial activity of natural products against Helicobacter pylori: a review

Throughout the genetic and physiological evolution of microorganisms, the microbiological sciences have been expanding the introduction of new therapeutic trials against microbial diseases. Special attention has been paid to the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, which induces gastric infections capable of causing damage, ranging from acute and chronic gastritis to the development of gastric cancer and death. The use of compounds with natural origins has gained popularity in scientific research focused on drug innovation against H. pylori because of their broad flexibility and low toxicity. The aim of this study was to describe the use of natural products against H. pylori in order to clarify important parameters for related fields. The study demonstrated the vast therapeutic possibilities for compounds originating from natural sources and revealed the need for innovations from future investigations to expand the therapeutic arsenal in the fight against H. pylori infection.

Relações Públicas e Cidadania: uma contribuição do Le Monde Diplomatique

As relações públicas podem construir uma informação e uma formulação da realidade, a partir da mídia, sem ser influenciado pelos grandes meios de comunicação de massa? Qual a relevância dessa maneira de se informar na conjuntura atual para o profissional de relações-públicas e como ele pode atuar em prol das causas sociais? O presente texto busca estabelecer parâmetros de atuação para os profissionais de relações públicas preocupados com as transformações sociais no mundo contemporâneo. Para chegar a tal objetivo estruturamos nossa análise a partir temáticas capazes de dar uma resposta à inquietação inicial. Realizamos a reconstituição da trajetória recente dos movimentos sociais no Brasil, procuramos esclarecer o conceito polissêmico de cidadania e direitos humanos, relacionando-os com a comunicação, assim como rever a trajetória das relações públicas na contemporaneidade levantando algumas hipóteses que contemplem novas perspectivas para a profissão. Dessa maneira, pretende-se mostrar a existência de um campo de atuação dialógica para os profissionais de comunicação abalizados pelo engajamento da transformação social

Impacto da ABNT NBR 15575 na qualidade da construção civil

The quality in construction is increasingly a concern in this sector, in view of the occurrence of problems in civil works, even when a contractor is certified by ISO 9001. The ISO 9001 certification does not ensure the maintenance of quality because it only establishes the requirements for a quality management system (QMS) to ensure standardization of processes and products. With the development of ISO 15575, standard performance, the builders took on a quality parameter with the requirements established by this Standard, which must be met. Thus, the implementation of a quality management system (QMS) becomes essential, showing users the concern for quality. This study aimed to verify, through a case study, the impact of NBR 15575 quality construction and how that standard of performance may be the key element of ISO 9001 to ensure quality maintenance of civil works

Marketing de relacionamento e relações públicas: uma aplicação no serviço de pós-venda da Embraer Executive Jets

The present study aims to investigate the interrelationship between the Relationship Marketing and Public Relations areas, high lighting its strategic value. The main goal is to discuss how the public relations professional can manage the customer loyalty by improving the after-sales services provided, applying it to a specific market such as business a viation. To establish the foundation to support the hypotheses, a revision of the subject literature was made, seeking to break down the barriers between marketing-mainly of relationship and public relations knowledge fields. A consult of the relevant literature was a continuous activity throughout the work. Divided into three chapters, the two first ones of fundamentals concepts, presents an after-sales services scenario, emphasizing the importance of the relationship and the definition of audiences in this area, in addition to a detailed description of the luxury market, a business aviation reality. The third chapter ends the discussion with a relationship proposal for Embraer Executive Jets, through actions based on the studied concepts. By gathering ideas and reflecting about the subject, using them to develop the proposal, a conclusion was resulted: the public relations professional is prepared and essential to build an effective after-sales relationship, since it's concerned about the communication excellence and knows the audiences significance in this process

Análise dos acidentes automobilísticos atendidos no Hospital das Clínicas no ano de 2010, Botucatu

As a result of the 20th-century industrial development, and particularly after World War II, cars have become an important consumer good, and this has led to a large number of circulating vehicles. To this day, the number of cars has increased exponentially worldwide, which results in a high number of traffic accidents (TAs) every day. TAs are responsible for 1.2 million deaths worldwide each year, and in Brazil, they are considered to be a public health problem, considering that its traffic is regarded as one of the worst and most dangerous in the world. In addition to temporary or permanent physical disabilities that bring great harm to individuals, accidents also cause psychological disorders, such as the post-traumatic stress disorder. Hence, considering the importance of TAs in the country and their outcomes, this study aimed at investigating the epidemiological aspects of car accidents occurring in 2010 who were assisted in the emergency room of a university hospital in São Paulo state. By means of records made by the nursing team and medical records analysis, it was possible to extract a stratified sample of 88 cases involving adults and eight cases involving children. The sample was analyzed by the SAS software for Windows, version 9.2. As regards the accidents involving adults, there was a predominance of males (67%), with an approximate 2:1 ratio in relation to females. The victims’ most frequent age range was 20-29 years (39%), and they were mostly single (56%). The month showing the largest number of occurrences was July, with 17%, and the weekday was Sunday, with 25%. Showing 32%, the time period when most accidents occurred was from 06:00 o’clock p.m. to 11:59 p.m. As regards vehicles types involved, motorcycles were in first place, with 47% of cases, and the most common accident type was crashing between vehicles, with 43%... A influência do estresse sobre a qualidade da carne

The meat quality is evaluated by consumers according to their physical characteristics, such as color, texture, juiciness, tenderness and odor. The stress during the life of the animal and at the moment before the slaughter may be responsible for changes in the transformation of muscle into meat. Such changes may lead to the appearance of DFD (Dark, Firm and Dry) and PSE (Pale, Soft and Exudative) meats, which are poorly accepted in the market – because of their unusual aspect – and inadequate to industrial processing. Factors related to the handling, loading, transport, unloading, resting period and stunning are singled out as critical, since that, in these phases the animals are subjected to adverse situations to which they are accustomed. The aim of this study is to identify the process of ante-mortem and the slaughter itself in which the animals are subjected to stressful situations, as well as the consequences of stress on meat quality
