A sample series of silica sonogels was prepared using different water-tetraethoxysilane molar ratio (r(w)) in the gelation step of the process in order to obtain aerogels with different bulk densities after the supercritical drying. The samples were analyzed by means of small-angle x-ray-scattering (SAXS) and nitrogen-adsorption techniques. Wet sonogels exhibit mass fractal structure with fractal dimension D increasing from similar to2.1 to similar to2.4 and mass-fractal correlation length xi diminishing from similar to13 nm to similar to2 nm, as r(w) is changed in the nominal range from 66 to 6. The process of obtaining aerogels from sonogels and heat treatment at 500degreesC, in general, increases the mass-fractal dimension D, diminishes the characteristic length xi of the fractal structure, and shortens the fractal range at the micropore side for the formation of a secondary structured particle, apparently evolved from the original wet structure at a high resolution level. The overall mass-fractal dimension D of aerogels was evaluated as similar to2.4 and similar to2.5, as determined from SAXS and from pore-size distribution by nitrogen adsorption, respectively. The fine structure of the secondary particle developed in the obtaining of aerogels could be described as a surface-mass fractal, with the correlated surface and mass-fractal dimensions decreasing from similar to2.4 to similar to2.0 and from similar to2.7 to similar to2.5, respectively, as the aerogel bulk density increases from 0.25 (r(w)=66) up to 0.91 g/cm(3) (r(w)=6).

We introduce a generalization of the relativistic eikonal amplitude originally developed to describe elastic scattering between structureless particles. The coherent and incoherent proton-nucleus scattering processes are analysed and closed-form expressions for elastic and inelastic amplitudes are derived. In particular, for the incoherent case, an energy-conserving version of Glauber's theory is obtained.

The interaction between the nonionic surfactant C(12)E(5) and a high molar mass (M = 5.94 x 10(5)) poly(ethylene oxide) (PEG) in aqueous solution has been examined as a function of temperature by dynamic light scattering and fluorescence methods over a broad concentration range. Clusters of small surfactant micelles form within the PEO coil, leading to its extension. The hydrodynamic radius of the complex increases strongly with temperature as well as with the concentrations of surfactant and polymer. At high concentrations of the surfactant, the coil/micellar cluster complex coexists with free C(12)E(5) micelles in the solution. Fluorescence quenching measurements show a moderate micellar growth from 155 to 203 monomers in PEO-free solutions of C(12)E(5) over a wide concentration range (0.02-2.5%) at 8 degrees C. Below 0.25% C(12)E(5), the average aggregation number (N) of the micelles is smaller in the presence of PEO than in its absence. However, N increases with increasing surfactant concentration up to a plateau value of about 270 at about 1.2% (ca. 30 mM) C(12)E(5). At high surfactant concentrations, N is larger in the presence of polymer than in its absence, a finding which is connected to a significant lowering of the clouding temperature due to the PEO at these compositions. Similar results of increasing aggregation number followed by a plateau were also found at a fixed concentration of surfactant (2.5%) and varied PEO.

Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and nitrogen adsorption techniques were used to study the temperature and time structural evolution of the nanoporosity in silica xerogels prepared from acid- and ultrasound-catalyzed hydrolysis of tetraetboxysilane (TEOS). Silica xerogels present a structure of nanopores of fully random shape, size, and distribution, which can be described by an exponential correlation function gamma(r) = exp (-r/a), where a is the correlation distance, as predicted by the Debye, Anderson, and Brumberger (DAB) model. The mean pore size was evaluated as about 1.25 nm from SAXS and about 1.9 nm from nitrogen adsorption. The nanopore elimination in TEOS sonohydrolysis-derived silica xerogels is readily accelerated at temperatures around 900 degrees C probably by the action of a viscous flow mechanism. The nanopore elimination process takes place in such a way that the pore volume fraction and the specific surface are reduced while the mean pore size remains constant. Small-angle X-ray scattering study of sol-gel-derived siloxane-PEG and siloxane-PPG hybrid materials
Resumo:
Hybrid organic-inorganic two-phase nanocomposites of siloxane-poly(ethylene glycol) (SiO3/2-PEG) and siloxane-poly(propylene glycol) (SiO3/2-PPG) have been obtained by the sol-gel process. In these composites, nanometric siloxane heterogeneities are embedded in a polymeric matrix with covalent bonds in the interfaces. The structure of these materials was investigated in samples with different molecular weights of the polymer using the smalt-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) technique. The SAXS spectra exhibit a well-defined peak that was attributed to the existence of a strong spatial correlation of siloxane clusters. LiClO4-doped siloxane-PEG and siloxane-PPG hybrids, which exhibit good ionic conduction properties, have also been studied as a function of the lithium concentration [O]/[Li], O being the oxygens of ether type. SAXS results allowed us to establish a structural model for these materials for different basic compositions and a varying [Li] content. The conclusion is consistent with that deduced from ionic conductivity measurements that exhibit a maximum for [O]/[Li] =15.

The effects of nonlinear scalar field couplings on elastic proton-nucleus scattering observables are investigated using a relativistic impulse approximation. Nonlinear couplings affect in a nontrivial way the effective nucleon mass and the nuclear scalar and vector densities. Modifications on the densities might have observable consequences on scattering observables. Our investigation indicates that the description of the observables for the reactions p-O-16 and p-Ca-40 at 200 MeV are not greatly modified with the use of nonlinear models in comparison with the description using linear models.

Complex Kohn variational principle is applied to the numerical solution of the fully off-shell Lippmann-Schwinger equation for nucleon-nucleon scattering for various partial waves including the coupled S-3(1), D-3(1), channel. Analytic expressions are obtained for all the integrals in the method for a suitable choice of expansion functions. Calculations with the partial waves S-1(0), P-1(1), D-1(2), and S-3(1)-D-3(1) of the Reid soft core potential show that the method converges faster than other solution schemes not only for the phase shift but also for the off-shell t matrix elements. We also show that it is trivial to modify this variational principle in order to make it suitable for bound-state calculation. The bound-state approach is illustrated for the S-3(1)-D-3(1) channel of the Reid soft-core potential for calculating the deuteron binding, wave function, and the D state asymptotic parameters. A narrow S-wave resonance has been found in the positron-helium system at about 30 eV, using the close-coupling approach, in excitation and rearrangement cross sections to He(1s2s), He(1s2p), Ps(1s) and Ps(2s) states by employing different combinations of the following basis functions: He(1s1s), He(1s2s), He(1s2p), Ps(1s) and Ps(2s), where Ps stands for the positronium atom.

The vibrational spectra of palladium phthalocyanine (PdPc) evaporated thin solid films are reported, including the resonance Raman scattering, surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) and SERRS mapping of the film surface using micro-Raman spectroscopy with 633 nm laser radiation. SERRS of PdPc was obtained by evaporating an overlayer of Ag nanoparticles on to the PdPc film on glass. The SERRS enhancement factor is estimated as similar to10(4) with reference to PdPc evaporated films on glass. The molecular organization of the PdPc evaporated films was probed using transmission and reflection-absorption infrared spectra. It was established that a random molecular distribution found in PdPc evaporated films is independent of temperature. No evidence of thermal degradation due to thermal annealing was found in the films. Electronic absorption and emission spectra are also discussed. Copyright (C) 2002 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.

We study the effect of bound nucleon form factors on charged-current neutrino-nucleus scattering. The bound nucleon form factors of the vector and axial-vector currents are calculated in the quark-meson coupling model. We compute the inclusive C-12(nu(mu),mu(-))X cross sections using a relativistic Fermi gas model with the calculated bound nucleon form factors. The effect of the bound nucleon form factors for this reaction is a reduction of similar to8% for the total cross section, relative to that calculated with the free nucleon form factors.
