The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of acaricide applications and pruning of symptomatic branches in citrus leprosis management in Brazil. It was conducted in an orange plantation of the 'Pera' variety, grafted onto the 'Cleopatra' tangerine, in two seasons (2006-2007 and 2007-2008). The experimental design was randomized blocks in a factorial scheme consisting of the following factors: (A) acaricide, in three levels: spirodiclofen and cyhexatin applied in rotation, lime sulphur; no acaricides; (B) pruning to remove branches that showed symptoms of leprosis, with two levels: with pruning, without pruning. We carried out periodic assessments of Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) populations (vector of the leprosis virus), leprosis incidence and severity, fruit yield, and the economic feasibility of the applied strategies. Based on the results, we concluded that spirodiclofen and cyhexatin were more effective than lime sulphur in B. phoenicis control. Control with lime sulphur required more applications than spirodiclofen and cyhexatin in rotation, making it more expensive. Pruning of symptomatic branches used in isolation was not sufficiently effective to control leprosis and significantly increased control costs. Profits were higher when the control involved sprayings of spirodiclofen and cyhexatin in alternation, with or without pruning.

The lubricant oil used in engines of internal combustion must be, periodically, changed. Its mainly function in the engines is to reduce the friction between the pieces, but its presence also promotes the cleanness and the refrigeration of the equipment. These attributions, at the end of some cycles of operation, make the oil to be dirty, that is, full of contaminating substances such as water, gasoline, diesel, additives, oxidized hydro-carbons and rests of metals, not being recommended, therefore, its discarding in the environment. Thus, all the used lubricant oil that leaves the automobiles engine has been thrust, waiting for a solution. The pollution generated by the discarding of a ton of used oil per day in the soil or in the rivers is equivalent to a domestic sewer of 40 thousand of people. The indiscriminate burning of the used lubricant oil generates significant emissions of metallic oxides, besides other toxic gases, like the dioxin and sulphur oxides. In this context, the mean objective of this essay was to effectuate the rerrefine of the used lubricant oil, aiming the increase of its life cycle and consequently contributing for the reduction of the environmental pollution. According to the used process, it was possible to get a rerrefine oil, of good quality, which physicistchemistries properties are in compliance with the norms of NBR and ASTM

This work deals with the synthesis, spectroscopic characterization of mono and polynuclear Pd(II) compounds obtained from the reaction between [PdCl2(MeCN)2] precursor and imidazolidine-2-thione (L1) and benzimidazoline-2-thione (L2). The interaction between [PdCl2(MeCN)2] and imidazolidine-2-thione, in the 1:2 molar ratio, using MeOH as solvent, yielded compound [Pd2Cl4(L1)4]Cl2 (1) whereas the complex [Pd2Br4(L1)4]Br2 (2) was obtained from the reaction between 1 and Br- ions. Binuclear compounds of general formulae [Pd2(L2)4]X23/2 MeOH {X= Cl-(3), Br-(4)} were synthesized using benzimidazoline-2-thione as ligand, employing the same procedure used in the synthesis of 1 and 2, respectively. The new complexes 1-4 are crystalline, air stable and soluble in methanol and dmso. The compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, ESI/MS mass spectrometry and thermogravimetry. Coordination of the ligands L1 and L2 via sulphur atom was evidenced by the shift of the CS band (~499 cm-1, 1 and 2; ~620 cm-1, 3 and 4) to lower frequencies in comparison with those found in the free ligands (510 cm-1, L1; 660 cm-1, L2), indicating the weakening of the CS bom after coordination. ESI/EM mass spectra (positive mode) of the complexes 1-4 allowed atribute the molecular formulae [Pd2X4(L1)4]X2 {X= Cl-(1), Br-(2)} and [Pd2(L2)4]X2 {X= Cl-(3), Br-(4)} by the appearance of the peaks at m/z 794,61 [(1) + MeOH]+, m/z 836,77 [(2) - 2H - L1]+, m/z 810 [(3) - 2Cl]+, m/z 810 [(4) - 2Br]+. The TG-DTA curves showed that the complexes 1 and 2 are thermally stable up to 212 and 169º C, respectively, and further decompose to metallic palladium at 527º C (1, obt. 28,46 %; calcd. 27,88%) and 895º C (2, obt. 22,85 %; calcd. 22,62%). Compounds 3 and 4 exhibited an initial mass loss of ~5% between 25 -146º C related to the release of metanol molecules. The complexes 3...Fujimura Leite.

A study was carried out into the use of charcoal as a supplementary fuel in the iron-ore sintering process. The primary fuel was coke breeze and anthracite with 0, 10, 25, 50 and 100% replacement of the energy input with charcoal to produce sinter. This was achieved by considering the carbon content of each fuel and its corresponding participation on fuel blending, in order to have the same carbon input in each test run. An extensive analysis of the environmental impact was carried out regarding the atmospheric pollutants characterization (dust, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, total hydrocarbons, and dioxins and furans). Experimental results indicate that fuel blending where 50% of the heat input was provided by charcoal may be comparable with those using 100% coke, under normal sintering conditions, and may result in a 50% reduction on greenhouse gas emission. It was also observed that while dust, methane and hydrocarbons emissions increased, the total dioxins and furans, expressed as polychlorinated dibenzodioxins/furans, decreased approximately 50% when compared with operation with 100% coke.
