Laboratory time scale experiments were conducted on soils from the Mendip Hills area, England, with the purpose of evaluating the release of Rn-222 and their parent nuclides U-238 and U-234 to the water phase and to determine the influence of parameters that can affect the geochemical behaviour of these nuclides in natural systems. The specific surface area of the samples ranged from 43.8 to 52.5 cm(2) g(-1), where the particle size for all soil horizons is lognormally distributed, with modal values of the particle radius undersize ranging from 107 up to 203 mu m. The values for the released radon were between 26 and 194 pCi, which allowed to estimate emanation coefficients for these materials between 0.1 and 0.2, within the context of other values reported elsewhere. Soils derived from Carboniferous limestone and characterized by higher pH, exchangeable calcium, and the presence of U, but with a lower U-231/U-238 activity ratio, yielded the highest values for released Rn; however, this trend was not observed for dissolved U and its respective U-234/U-238 activity ratio, when considering the less aggressive etchant. Uranium is mobilized from rock matrix to A and B horizons in the analysed soil profiles, where its enrichment is about 10 times higher in soils derived from Carboniferous limestone. These data also permitted an evaluation of a theoretical model for the generation of Rn in soils and its transfer to water, in order to interpret the radioactivity due to this gas in groundwaters from the Mendip Hills district, England. The present work was conducted with the objective to study the effects of mineral nutrition on Eucalyptus grandis and Brachiaria decumbens (#BRADC) growth, when submitted to inter- and intra-specific competition. The treatments consisted of two plants of Eucalypts/pot, two plants of BRADC/pot, and one plant of each species/pot. The plants were nourished with the Hoagland e Arnon (1950) complete solution; with no K, P or N; or only with either N, P or K. Sixty days after growing side by side, no effect of the inter- and intra-specific competition on eucalypts plant high, branch number and leaf dry mass was observed. When mineral nutrition did not limit plant growth (complete solution or solution with no K), intra-specific competition reduced on average, 23% of eucalypts root length, leaf area, and stem and root dry mass, and inter-specific competition reduced, on average, 75% of BRADC dry mass. When mineral nutrition became a limiting factor, no plant competition effect on the parameters studied was detected.

In order to verify the effect of Panicum maximum plant density on the initial growth of Eucalyptus grandis plants, one assay was conducted under semi-controlled conditions of soil fertility and humidity. Dark red Latossol, collected from the arable layer, was used as substrate in 50 liters amianthus cement boxes. One seedling of Eucalyptus was planted in each box. Fifteen days later, seedlings of P. maximum were transplanted on the same box. The treatments consisted of 0, 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 plants of P. maximum per m 2. The experimental design was the complete randomized design, with six treatments and eight replicates for P. maximum. One hundred and ten and 190 days after transplanting, Eucalyptus plants grown among P. maximum showed an average reduction of 30.80 and 46.55% stem diameter, 25.10 and 22.50 plant high, 40.18 and 31.29% stem dry weight, 61.32 and 54.06% branch dry weight, 53.72 and 51.82% root dry weight, 44.62 and 38.50% leaf dry weight, 22.51 and 23.16 branch number, 20.72 and 19.97% leaf number, and 33.88 and 17.05% leaf area, respectively.

In the present study, we examined how residues of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and calcium (Ca) fertilisers affect leaf anatomical traits in Maprounea brasiliensis (Euphorbiaceae), a typical and dominant cerrado (Brazilian savannah) species adapted to dystrophic soils. We predicted that fertiliser residues would alter qualitative and quantitative aspects of M. brasiliensis leaves and would decrease their scleromorphy. Leaves were sampled from plants that were growing in soils previously fertilised with N, P and Ca and in plants that were growing in soils without fertiliser residues. We measured the thickness of the cuticle, the epidermis of adaxial and abaxial surfaces, thickness of palisade parenchyma and spongy parenchyma, total thickness of the leaf, total area of the midrib and leaf mass per area (LMA). We found that plants under fertiliser residues produced fewer scleromorphic leaves with low LMA, thinner cuticle and epidermis and thicker palisade and spongy parenchyma. They also showed a decrease in the size and area occupied by the leaf midvein. However, plants under fertiliser residues produced similar leaf thickness as did the plants in the control group. Our results showed that residual effects of fertilisation changed structural patterns of a typical species of cerrado. Thus, further studies about fertilisation effects on leaf traits are needed because larger areas of the central cerrado are being occupied for agricultural production. © 2013 CSIRO.

Deciduous forests from the neotropics are one of the most endangered forest types in the world due to the exploitation of their natural resources by mankind. Many aspects of these ecosystems have been studied; however, there is a lack of information about leaf structure and the effects of tree dominance on their structural leaf patterns. In this article, we examine leaf anatomy and specific leaf areas (SLA) in 13 tree species differing in their dominance in a Dry Forest site in Central Brazil, relating leaf anatomical traits with phytosociological aspects. Leaf anatomical traits differed according to tree dominance: greater leaf thickness (achieved through greater thickness of the mesophyll), low values of SLA and bigger stomata were found for the most dominant species, whereas the less dominant species showed thinner leaves with high SLA, as well as numerous and small stomata. These responses suggest that tree dominance is an important indirect effect associated with vertical light availability in the forest. These strategies are probably related to the accomplishment of a high performance in carbon gain and water economy, given the distinction in irradiance that the leaves of different species are subject to in the dry forest. © 2013 Copyright The Royal Society of New Zealand.

The most widely standard used for powdery mildew control on cucurbitaceas is the use of resistant cultivars and systemic fungicides, even though nutrition has been an option. The supply of silicon is benefic to many vegetable species, stimulating growth, yield, photosynthesis and regulation of transpiration; besides, its deposition in the epidermis avoids the invasion of fungus, bacteria and sucking insects. The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the influence of potassium silicate on powdery mildew control, development and yield of zucchini squash, cultivar Caserta. The experiment was conducted at Universidade Estadual Paulista, in greenhouse conditions and with a randomized design, divided in four replications, 11 plants per plot and five treatments: control (water), chemical treatment with fenarimol (2.4 g a.i. 100 L-1) and potassium silicate, in doses 1.5 L ha-1; 2.0 L ha-1 and 2.5 L ha-1. We evaluated the disease severity; gas exchange (net CO2 assimilation rates, transpiration, stomatal conductance and water use efficiency); growth (leaf area ratio, relative growth rate, absolute growth rate, net assimilation rate and specific leaf mass) and yield. The results showed that the foliar application of potassium silicate and fenarimol controlled powdery mildew and had no influence on plant growth. Therefore, the potassium silicate may be used as alternative for control of fungal pathogens and reduced application of chemical products, which provides a greater environmental sustainability. However, it is necessary to be careful with high doses because it was observed that 2.5 L h-1 was harmful to fruit production and gas exchange, despite being effective in controlling powdery mildew. According to this study it is recommended using 2.0 L ha-1 for control of powdery mildew to zucchini squash, and can replace the use of fenarimol, without affecting productivity and development of plants.
