A new selective sensor based on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) was developed for the determination of hexazinone (HXZ) in environmental samples. MIPs were synthesized using a non-covalent approach, and selection of the monomers employed in the polymerization reaction was carried out by molecular modeling. Three functional monomers with high (2-vinylpyridine (MP17)) and intermediate (methacrylic acid (MP12) and acrylamide (MP5)) energies of binding to the template (HXZ) were selected for preparation of the MIPs, in order to conduct comparative studies and validate the theoretical data. For sensor construction, carbon pastes were modified with each MIP or NIP (non-imprinted polymer), and HXZ determination was performed using differential pulse adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry (DPAdCSV). All parameters affecting the sensor response were optimized. In HCl at pH 2.5, the sensor prepared with MP17 (5% w/w in the paste) showed a dynamic linear range between 1.9 × 10−11 and 1.1 × 10−10 mol L−1, and a detection limit of 2.6 × 10−12 mol L−1, under the following conditions: accumulation time of 200 s at a potential of −0.5V, scan rate of 50 mVs−1, pulse amplitude of 60 mV, and pulse width of 50 ms. The sensor was selective in the presence of other similar compounds, and was successfully applied to the analysis of HXZ in river water samples.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the use of a high-power gallium-aluminum-arsenide diode laser (GaAlAs; 808 nm, 1 W, 20 s, 20 Hz, 10 J) alone or as adjunctive therapy to scaling and root planing in the treatment of induced periodontitis in rats. Periodontitis was induced by placing a ligature around the mandibular first molar of 60 rats. After 7 days, the ligature was removed and the animals were divided into four groups as follows: C (control), no periodontal treatment; SRP, scaling and root planing (SRP); DL, diode laser (DL) irradiation treatment; and SRP/DL, both SRP and DL irradiation treatment. Five animals from each group were euthanized at 7, 15, and 30 days posttreatment. The effectiveness of the treatments was evaluated in the furcation area using histopathological analysis, histometric analysis of alveolar bone loss (ABL), and immunohistochemical detection of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), and osteocalcin (OCN). DL, alone or in combination with adjunctive therapy to SRP in the treatment of experimental periodontitis, resulted in a decreased local inflammatory response. At 7-days posttreatment, the DL and SRP/DL groups had fewer TRAP-positive cells and more RUNX2-positive cells. There was greater OCN immunolabeling in the DL group than in the C and SRP groups at 15 days. There was less ABL in the DL and SRP/DL groups at 15 and 30 days. In conclusion, DL was effective in the treatment of ligature-induced periodontitis in rats, both when used alone and when used as adjunctive therapy to SRP.

Glucose biosensors based on lyophilised, crystalline and cross-linked glucose oxidase (GOx, CLEC(R)) and commercially available lyophilised GOx immobilised on top of glassy carbon electrodes modified with electrodeposited Prussian Blue are critically compared. Two procedures were carried out for preparing the biosensors: (1) deposition of one layer of adsorbed GOx dissolved in an aqueous solution followed by deposition of two layers of low molecular weight Nafion(R) dissolved in 90% ethanol, and (2) deposition of two layers of a mixture of GOx with Nafion dissolved in 90% ethanol. The performance of the biosensors was evaluated in terms of linear response range for hydrogen peroxide and glucose, detection limit, and susceptibility to some common interfering species (ascorbic acid, acetaminophen and uric acid). The operational stability of the biosensors was evaluated by applying a steady potential of -50 mV versus Ag/AgCl to the glucose biosensor and injecting standard solutions of hydrogen peroxide and glucose (50 muM and 1.0 mM, respectively, in phosphate buffer) for at least 5 h in a flow-injection system. Scanning electron microscopy was used for visualisation of the Prussian Blue redox catalyst and in the presence of the different GOx preparations on the electrode surface. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. Since oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most prevalent malignant cancer in the oral cavity, several researches have been performed to study the role of important enzymes in this disease. Among them, the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are highlighted, due to the fact that they are proteinases responsible to degrade many extra-cellular matrix components, making possible the invasion of neoplasic cells. Important tools in cancer prognosis have been utilized aiming to correlate high levels of MMPs and OSCC, such as immunohistochemical, zymographic and mRNA detection methods. However, these techniques are usually applied after cancer detection, characterizing a curative but not a preventive medicine. Trying to make interventions before the development of the disease and making possible the identification of people at high risk and, analysis of modifications in MMP genes has been a chance for modern medicine. Recently, polymorphisms in MMP genes have been related to different neoplasias, including OSCC. Despite investigation is beginning, MMP gene polymorphisms seems to have a promising future in oral cancer research and some of the present results have shown that there are MMP polymorphisms related to an increased risk for developing oral cancer. Canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) is an anthropozoonosis characterized by a clinically chronic progressive disease. Non lymphoid organs are also affected, especially the kidneys. Dogs with leishmaniasis usually die with renal failure despite treatment. Haematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining in kidney tissue sections has low sensitivity for parasite identification. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) are efficient methods for Leishmania sp. antigen and DNA detection in cases of low parasite burden. The present study aims to identify renal lesions of CVL and correlate them with microscopic findings determined by histochemistry, IHC and PCR. Both IHC and PCR provided similar positivity for amastigote identification, 3/20 animals (15%), thus increasing detection of the parasite in renal tissues when compared with histopathologic examination. The lesion most commonly observed with visceral leishmaniasis-positive canine kidney tissue was membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, followed by interstitial nephritis without correlation to the number of amastigotes.
