Inspired in recent works of Biedenham [1, 2] on the realization of the q-algebra su(q)(2), We show in this note that the condition [2j + 1](q) = N-q(j) = integer, implies the discretization of the deformation parameter alpha, where q = e(alpha). This discretization replaces the continuum associated to ct by an infinite sequence alpha(1), alpha(2), alpha(3),..., obtained for the values of j, which label the irreps of su(q)(2). The algebraic properties of N-q(j) are discussed in some detail, including its role as a trace, which conducts to the Clebsch-Gordan series for the direct product of irreps. The consequences of this process of discretization are discussed and its possible applications are pointed out. Although not a necessary one, the present prescription is valuable due to its algebraic simplicity especially in the regime of appreciable values of alpha.

We report the preliminary result of an exact calculation of the asymmetry parameter, alambda, in the nonmesonic hypernuclear decay, based on a one-meson-exchange (OME) model. For the case of He and including one-pion-exchange only, the result is shown not to differ considerably from the one obtained with the approximate formula widely used in the literature. In particular, the sign of alambda remains negative, in disagreement with its most recent experimental determination. Whether these facts remain true for heavier hypernuclei and in a more complete OME model is still under investigation.

We consider a dynamical model of a superfluid Fermi gas in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer regime trapped in a periodic optical lattice (OL) potential. The model is based on an equation for complex order parameter phi of the superfluid, which is derived from the relevant energy density and includes a self-repulsive term similar to phi(7/3). By means of the variational approximation (VA) and numerical simulations, we find families of stable one- and two-dimensional (I D and 2D) gap solitons (GSs) in this model. Chiefly, they are compact objects trapped in a single cell of the OL. Families of stable even and odd bound states of these GSs are also found in one dimension. A 3D GS family is constructed too, but solely within the framework of the VA. In the linear limit, the VA predicts an almost exact position of the left edge of the first band-gap in the OL-induced spectrum. The full VA provides an accurate description of families of I D and 2D fundamental GSs. We also demonstrate that a I D GS can be safely transported by an OL moving at a moderate velocity. Making sure that causality be preserved by means of ''covariantizing'' the gauge-dependent singularity in the propagator of the vector potential A(mu)(x), we show that the evaluation of some basic one-loop light-cone integrals reproduce those results obtained through the Mandelstam-Leibbrandt prescription. Moreover, such a covariantization has the advantage of leading to simpler integrals to be performed in the cone variables (the bonus), although, of course, it introduces an additional alpha-parameter integral to be performed (the price to pay).

A new concept of fault detection and isolation using robust observation for systems with random noises is presented. The method selects the parameters from components that may fault during the process and constructs well conditioned robust observers, considering sensors faults. To isolate component failures via robust observation, a bank of detection observers is constructed, where each observer is only sensitive to one specified component failure while robust to all other component failures.

Mitotic chromosomes of four fish species of the family Anostomidae, belonging to the genera Leporinus, Leporellus, and Schizodon, were studied. With 2n = 54 meta- and submetacentric chromosomes, this family appears to be characterized by marked karyotypic stability. Although perceptible differences exist, mainly in the amount of constitutive heterochromatin present in the chromosomes of these species, these differences do not affect the structure and/or size of these chromosomes. Chromatin substitutions and/or modifications may have led, in one direction, to an increase in heterochromatin in some species and, in the opposite direction, to heterochromatin reduction in others. Whether these changes are accompanied by changes in the amount of euchromatin in the chromosomes is an open question. The nucleolar organizer regions, which may be located on different chromosomes in the various species, may also be indicators of reorganization of these karyotypes.

We give general expressions for the vector asymmetry in the angular distribution of protons in the nonmesonic weak decay of polarized hypernuclei. From these we derive an explicit expression for the calculation of the asymmetry parameter, a(Lambda), which is applicable to the specific cases of He-5(Lambda) and C-12(Lambda) described within the extreme shell model. In contrast to the approximate formula widely used in the literature, it includes the effects of three-body kinematics in the final states of the decay and correctly treats the contribution of transitions originating from single-proton states beyond the s-shell. This expression is then used for the corresponding numerical computation of a(Lambda) within several one-meson-exchange models. Besides the strictly local approximation usually adopted for the transition potential, we also consider the addition of the first-order nonlocality terms. We find values for a(Lambda) ranging from -0.62 to -0.24, in qualitative agreement with other theoretical estimates but in contradiction with some recent experimental determinations.

We compare exact and semiclassical Husimi distributions for the single eigenstates of a one-dimensional resonant Hamiltonian. We find that both distributions concentrate near the unstable fixed points even when these points are made complex by suitably varying a parameter. © 1992 The American Physical Society.

A renormalization scheme for the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction based on a subtracted T-matrix equation is proposed and applied to the one-pion-exchange potential supplemented by contact interactions. The singlet and triplet scattering lengths are given to fix the renormalized strengths of the contact interactions. With only one scaling parameter (μ), the results show an overall very good agreement with neutron-proton data, particularly for the observables related to the triplet channel. The agreement is qualitative in the 1 S0 channel. Between the low-energy NN observables we have examined, the mixing parameter of the 3S1-3D1 states is the most sensitive to the scale. The scheme is renormalization group invariant for μ → ∞. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The present work deals with a family of simply periodic orbits around the Moon in the rotating Earth Moon-particle system. Taking the framework of the planar, circular, restricted three-body problem, we follow the evolution of this family of periodic orbits using the numerical technique of Poincaré surface of section. The maximum amplitude of oscillation about the periodic orbits are determined and can be used as a parameter to measure the degree of stability in the phase space for such orbits. Despite the fact that the whole family of periodic orbits remain stable, there is a dichotomy in the quasi-periodic ones at the Jacobi constant Cj = 2.85. The quasi-periodic orbits with Cj < 2.85 oscillate around the periodic orbits in a different way from those with Cj > 2.85. © 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
