Different (Sn,Ti)O2 compositions were sintered at 1450 °C for 2 h with the purpose of investigating their sintering and mass transport properties. Highly dense ceramics were obtained and their structural properties studied by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The changes in lattice parameters were analyzed by the Rietveld method and two mass transport mechanisms were observed during sintering in different temperature ranges, evidenced by the linear shrinkage rate as a function of temperature. The effect of the concentration of TiO2 on mass transport and densiffication during sintering was analyzed by considering the intrinsic defects. System densiffication was attributed to a mass transport mechanism in the SnO2 matrix, caused by the presence of TiO2, which formed a solid solution phase. The change in the mass transport mechanism was attributed to chemical bonding between SnO2 and TiO2, which improves ionic difusion as the concentration of TiO2 increased in (Sn,Ti)O2 compositions. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. The solid solution 0.9PbMg 1/3Nb 2/3O 3-0.1PbTiO 3 is one of the most widely investigated relaxor ceramic, because of its high dielectric constant and low sintering temperatures. PMN-PT powders containing single perovskite phase were prepared by using a Timodified columbite precursor obtained by the polymeric precursor method. Such precursor reacts directly with stoichiometric amount of PbO to obtain pyrochlore-free PMN-PT powders. The structural effects of K additive included in the columbite precursor and 0.9PMN-0.1PT powders were also studied. The phase formation at each processing step was verified by XRD analysis, being these results used for the structural refinement by the Rietveld method. It was verified the addition of K in the columbite precursor promotes a slight increasing in the powder crystallinity. There was not a decrease in the amount of perovskite phase PMN-PT for 1mol% of K, and the particle and grain size were reduced, making this additive a powerful tool for grain size control.

Lanthanum-modified bismuth titanate, Bi4 - xLaxTi3O12 (BLT) ceramics, with x ranging from 0 to 0.75 were prepared by the polymeric precursor method. Orthorhombicity of the system is decreased with the increase of lanthanum content in the bismuth titanate (BIT) crystal lattice. No secondary phases were evident after lanthanum addition. Increasing lanthanum content causes a structural distortion in the bismuth titanate lattice. The shape of the grains is strongly influenced by the lanthanum added to the system. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. The main aim of this study was to develop dense and conducting SnO 2 ceramics without precipitated phases on the grain boundaries, which was verified using field emission scanning microscopy (FE-SEM) coupled with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (FE-SEM/EDS). Two sample groups were investigated, where the first sample group was doped with zinc while the second one was doped with cobalt. The ceramics were prepared using the oxides mixture method and the sintering was carried out in a conventional muffle oven as well as in microwave oven. The results obtained were found to be similar regarding the relative density for the two sintering methods while time and temperature gains were observed for the microwave sintering method. The relative densities obtained were nearly 95%, for the two sintering methods. Concerning the electrical characterization measurements-electric field x current density as well as the environment temperature, the ceramics obtained through the conventional sintering method presented non-ohmic behavior. For the microwave sintered ceramics, we observed an ohmic behavior with electrical resistivity of 1.3 Ωcm for the samples doped with ZnO/Nb 2O 5 and 2.5 Ωcm for that of the samples doped with CoO/Nb 2O 5. The FE-SEM/EDS results for the microwave sintered ceramics indicated a structure with a reduced number of pores and other phases segregated at the grain boundaries, which leads to a better conductive ceramic than the conventional oven sintered samples. The dilatometry analysis determined the muffle sintering temperature and the difference between the densification of cobalt and zinc oxides. The addition of niobium oxide resulted in the decrease in resistivity, which thus led us to conclude that it is possible to obtain dense ceramics with low electrical resistivity based on SnO 2 using commercial oxides by the oxides mixture technique and the microwave oven sintering method. This paper describes research on a simple low-temperature synthesis route to prepare bismuth ferrite nanopowders by the polymeric precursor method using bismuth and iron nitrates. BiFeO 3 (BFO) nanopowders were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction analyses, (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy (Raman), thermogravimnetric analyses (TG-DTA), ultra-violet/vis (UV/Vis) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). XRD patterns confirmed that a pure perovskite BiFeO 3 structure with a rhombohedral distorted perovskite structure was obtained by heating at 850 °C for 4 hours. Typical FT-IR spectra for BFO powders revealed the formation of a perovskite structure at high temperatures due to a metal-oxygen bond while Raman modes indicated oxygen octahedral tilts induced by structural distortion. A homogeneous size distribution of BFO powders obtained at 850 °C for 4 hours was verified by FE-SEM analyses. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

In this research report, a sintering process of porous ceramic materials based on Al2O3 was employed using a method where a cation precursor solution is embedded in an organic fibrous cotton matrix. For porous green bodies, the precursor solution and cotton were annealed at temperatures in the range of 100-1600°C using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis to obtain a porous body formation and disposal process containing organic fibers and precursor solution. In a structure consisting of open pores and interconnected nanometric grains, despite the low porosity of around 40% (calculated geometrically), nitrogen physisorption determined a specific surface area of 14m2/g, which shows much sintering of porous bodies. Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analytical methods revealed a predominant amount of α-Al2O3 in the sintered samples. Thermal properties of the sintered Al2O3 fibers were obtained by using the Laser Flash which resulted in the lower thermal conductivity obtained by α-Al2O3 and therefore improved its potential use as an insulating material. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

Optimization of the major properties of anodes based on proton conductors, such as microstructure, conductivity and chemical stability, is yet to be achieved. In this study we investigated the influence of indium on the chemical stability, microstructural and electrical characteristics of proton conducting NiO-BaCe0.9-xInxY0.1O 3-δ (NiO-BCIYx) anodes. Four compositions of cermet anode substrates NiO-BCIYx were prepared using the method of evaporation and decomposition of solutions and suspensions (EDSS). Sintered anode substrates were reduced and their microstructural and electrical properties were examined before and after reduction as a function of the amount of indium. Anode substrates tested on chemical stability in the CO2 atmosphere showed high stability compared to anode substrates based on commonly used doped barium cerates. Microstructural properties of the anode pellets before and after testing in CO2 were investigated using X-ray diffraction analysis. Impedance spectroscopy measurements were used for evaluation of electrical properties of the anode pellets and the conductivity values of reduced anodes of more than 14 S cm-1 at 600 °C confirmed percolations through Ni particles. Under fuel cell operating conditions, the cell with a Ni-BCIY20 anode achieved the highest performance, demonstrating a peak power density 223 mW/cm2 at 700 °C confirming the functionality of Ni-BCIY anodes.© 2013 Elsevier B.V. A glassy carbon electrode chemically modified with nickel oxyhydroxide from a nickel hexacyanoferrate (NiHCF) film was used to determine glycerol in biodiesel by cyclic voltammetry. The modified electrode exhibited a linear response to glycerol concentration in the range from 0.05 to 0.35mmol L-1, and a detection limit of 0.030mmol L-1. The glycerol concentration found in the biodiesel sample was 0.156mmol L-1. The method developed in this study showed a recovery of (100.3±5.0)%. © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.

The demand for petroleum has been rising rapidly due to increasing industrialization and modernization. This economic development has led to a huge demand for energy, most of which is derived from fossil fuel. However, the limited reserve of fossil fuel has led many researchers to look for alternative fuels which can be produced from renewable feedstock. Increasing fossil fuel prices have prompted the global oil industry to look at biodiesel, which is from renewable energy sources. Biodiesel is produced from animal fats and vegetable oils and has become more attractive because it is more environmentally friendly and is obtained from renewable sources. Glycerol is the main by-product of biodiesel production; about 10% of the weight of biodiesel is generated in glycerol. The large amount of glycerol generated may become an environmental problem, since it cannot be disposed of in the environment. In this paper, an attempt has been made to review the different approaches and techniques used to produce glycerol (hydrolysis, transesterification, refining crude glycerol). The world biodiesel/glycerol production and consumption market, the current world glycerin and glycerol prices as well as the news trends for the use of glycerol mainly in Brazil market are analyzed. The technological production and physicochemical properties of glycerol are described, as is the characterization of crude glycerol obtained from different seed oil feedstock. Finally, a simple way to use glycerol in large amounts is combustion, which is an advantageous method as it does not require any purification. However, the combustion process of crude glycerol is not easy and there are technological difficulties. The news and mainly research about the combustion of glycerol was also addressed in this review. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.
